Honeysuckle Wizard Staff
Ойын-сауық
I walked past this piece of honeysuckle without noticing it for a long time... until this morning. As I moved past it, I was drawn to its perfect form, twists and curves, and a tight root ball. As soon as I took hold of it, I knew what needed to be done.

Rod, I always love watching your turning videos and I have really enjoyed the varying videos you are doing. Product demos, alternative bowl carving, and now great looking Wizard Sticks! You're a Wizard Rod! 😀 Thanks for sharing.

I really appreciate that, Bill! If I spend too much time in the shop, the shop loses my interest... I need to do different things to maintain some level of creativity and avoid the burn out. I'm grateful for your understanding and support!
To see beautiful things in nature is such a blessing. What a nice walking stick. I'm glad the snow is all gone. My home state is Indiana. I miss it. God bless and have a great weekend.

Thank you very much, Jane! We hardly got any snow here in my area of Indiana, it was a very mild and disappointing (lol) winter. But, I'll make the best of what I'm given and enjoy the outdoors 😊

@R Humphrey I am from Mishawaka, I miss the winter snow. GA is always weird weather. lol, cold in the morning, comfortable at noon, hot at night. I stay in shorts most of the year. My sister said they had quite a bit of snow, but then they get Lake effect snow. Have a blessed weekend.
I grew up in Michigan between Lansing and Charlotte. Walking sticks were always magical to us kid's and your's just reminded me of those moments in time that were special.

I'm somewhat familiar with your area in Michigan, Debra, I grew up in Alma and West Branch. I LOVE Michigan and go there as often as I can. I so enjoyed growing up there and spending my youth outside, in the woods, up the trees, cross country skiing... very special indeed.
Good morning, Marine. I love your shop for this video. The lighting and setting was perfect. It's nice to be taking a stroll with nature and find a cool project. Thanks for sharing a part of your day with us. Very peaceful and relaxing. Congratulations to Jon. All the best to you, Brother. God bless.

Thanks very much, brother! I'm getting ready to head back out there now... Edgar beckons! Be well!
Nice walkabout project on a gorgeous day! What's not to like? Honeysuckle is some surprisingly tough wood. My sister removed a positively ancient Amur Honeysuckle bush (invasive) from behind her house, and the largest trunk was over 5 inches in diameter. I've got a bunch of the staves seasoning in the rafters of my garden shed. Made a tobacco pipe out of part of it, breaking it in soon.

I have a couple bigger bushes on my land. They can get quite beautiful, and you're right, it's very hard stuff. Pipe is a good idea...
Whether it's with a lathe, a knife, or a chainsaw, your work is always fascinating to watch.

Congratulations Mr. Sayer!
It is amazing how something you can walk by numerous times suddenly jumps out and demands your attention. This was a great job and I really like the way it came out. Was that amethyst that you placed at the head? I have been carrying a walking stick for many years and I can see where this one will be joining you on your hikes.

It really is, isn't it! They stay out of sight until we're ready to see them, I suppose. It's a 20 sided die that I cast in resin some years ago. It sat on a shelf in my shop waiting for that staff to be noticed as well, lol!
Nice. I've also spent time searching the wood for inspiration. Thanks for sharing!

Honeysuckle is wonderful, the deer come into my yard and rub against the bark, they like to nibble to odd shred of the bark the have loosened. I use small sections of the thicker branch (can you call it a trunk ?) to turn very small rounded bits for my cats. They love it, they will hold it in their paws and lick it and even chew on it, it also makes very nice pulls for ceiling fans too.. Have to try making a walking stick, I have one piece that has a top that looks like a bird's head. Do you think shrub cherry branches would work as well? Love the outdoors where you are. it is still very snowy and cold here. I do not have a decent whittling knife do you have any particular brand that holds a decent edge? Blessing to you are your family.

It's a very pretty plant, but somewhat of a weed here... thought he birds and deer and pollinators love it. I'd call it a thick stem. They're tough to find in the right shape as they tend to be very curved, but every now and then a nice one shows up. I'm not sure about the shrub cherry branches but it's worth a look! As far as the knife I'm using, I put a link in this videos description area to it. It's an Oknife Drever pocket knife, very well built with roller bearings, and a quality blade. It comes sharp and holds a nice edge, but as you know, all knives need to be maintained. Very high quality for a great price. Thanks again!
I must have missed what happened to your lathe, Rod. Would you mind sharing that info please?
