Honeybees in Water Meter: How to Remove and Rescue

Come along with us as we remove and rescue bees from a water meter box in Dallas, Texas (Mesquite area).
This is the full-length video from a water meter box bee removal. We'll take you along for the entire ride - from opening the lid of the box to the end and cleanup of all the bees.
There is an unexpected find on a completely honey bound underground bee colony - a small (and likely virgin) queen bee.
Join us on an unexpected mid-November adventure as we carefully remove a honeybee colony from a water meter box in Mesquite, Texas. Despite the chilly season, we had a VERY nice - 70 degree day, and the bees are buzzing, and we're here to safely relocate them to a more suitable habitat.     Looks like they swarmed, possibly because they ran out of space. Were the queen cells open?

    That was our take as well… likely had recently swarmed. Yes, queen cups were all open or chewed. We were really surprised to find a young, possibly virgin queen. It’s also possible that she was mated, and simply had shut down egg laying… hard to say for sure. In either case, the colony has a chance now, whereas if left where they were, they would have died or been exterminated…

    @@JelMain - for sure... at least not purposefully... Point is, is that there are very few drones left in colonies at this point in the year. Most drones have been kicked out of the hives. 🙂

    @@JelMain - We can bolster the colony with resources and bees from other hives. Might also consider a double screened bottom board and put them directly on top of another colony for winter survival.... or take those bees and give them to another colony to bolster one that might be a bit weaker... lots of options. 🙂
