'honey' was written four years ago, when i learnt that my school didn't allow same-sex couples to be officially partnered for the ball. (thankfully this rule is no longer in place and lgbt+ people can happily take their dates!) the song won best lyrics at smokefree rockquest for hawkes' bay in 2016 - a feat i'm still excited by, because i had expected 'honey' to meet a much poorer reception than the loving response it found. avid followers may remember this song making its way to my channel long ago as a terrible phone recording!
late last year i decided to attempt my own recording of it from home. i filtered it to sound like it was playing from old vinyl, and messed around with the sound effects on my keyboard to get that blocky cello near the end. unfortunately, i think this is the end of the song's journey - i'm very proud of 'honey', but ready to let go and make way for my new material and sound. to any of you who have told me how much they love the track over the years, this is for you. x
