    The Lord of the Rings Movies felt like they were telling such an epic tale it couldn't possibly be contained into three three hour movies, which to an extent is true. They did cut a lot out from the books. The Hobbit movies feel like they're obligated to be this long so they just sort of have to fill time. That is the crucial difference between the two.

    +Thinh Vo True, but fellowship was formed after something actually happened (it was in the middle of the first book, like 200 pages in). In hobbit I felt it was more like 45 minutes of filling without purpose (it was only like 20 pages of book). I know books and movie are different and they wanted to prolong this movie, but I would prefer it in more interesting parts.

    imo, I don't understand why people dislike the idea of a director choosing to make multiple movies off one novel. People believe film makers do this to make more money but if Peter Jackson were to make the Hobbit into one movie it would be so fast paced and would simply have no meaning as a movie. I mean look at The Last Airbender, they tried putting 21 episodes off a cartoon into one movie and the movie couldn't have been worse.

  • @disobedientdolphin

    @disobedientdolphin

    9 жыл бұрын

    I don't think so. If Peter Jackson made this novel into one movie it would just be perfect, two movies would have been acceptable (due to the fact that he includes many details that actually weren't in the book). But with three movies it's quite obvious that greed was the animating spirit.

  • @Gobtik

    @Gobtik

    Rome Daniel If you look at the LOTR trilogy, each book alone is a 4 hour film (edited to 3 but the DVD extended edition include some worthwhile extra bits). Put in pure maths, Fellowship is 187790 words, Two Towers is 156198 and Return of the King is 137115 - total 481103 words - makes 3 films. Hobbit is 95356 words - about half that of Fellowship - and yet somehow they can do all 3 of the LOTR series as 3 films edited to 3 hours and yet this one book somehow takes 3 films all by itself? It's absolute nonsense and a pure money spinner to make the shortest book need the most film and you can see that with all the filler. If it was down to a director and editor, not studios pushing for money, the could have done the Hobbit in 1 3 hour film without any problem, kept to the story and been done, as it's about money, you get 3 films of filler.

  • @swagmasterdoritos

    @swagmasterdoritos

    Gobtik You guys do make good points. The Hobbit an unexpected journey was extremely slow paced, especially the whole intro when the dwarves arrived at Bilbo's house. I mean forty minutes of movie for 30 pages in a book is pretty ridiculous.

  • @Gobtik

    @Gobtik

    9 жыл бұрын

    Rome Daniel They cut out a lot of waffle from the LOTR trilogy like the whole segment with Tom Bombadil and they shortened it by using Wormtongue to kill off Saruman rather than the hobbits doing it at the end of the book but it was a good take on the book, Hobbit is just nonsense, I'm sure some fan will edit the 3 of them into one sensible film in the future

  • @fantasmic77

    Ok, I understand, but the added scenes don't take away from the hobbit storyline at all, it takes them longer to reach their goal, but they reach it all the same with all of the same conflicts. If someone added 2 minutes to a linkin park song, but kept the same tone and melodies/themes of the song, would it really affect what was already there? Added to that, if you really want to keep everything the same, DON'T WATCH THE MOVIES...the books are still there, they're not going anywhere.

    AllHailNetflix It's been a while since I've read the book and watched the movie but just off the top of my head: - Thorin on his deathbed and his funeral, whatever happened with the Akenstone - Bilbo being named elf-friend and generally the entire scene where he talks to Thranduil - speaking of Thranduil: he never goes to Laketown to help its citizen's (in fact the movie acts as if he doesn't give a fuck about them, or anyone really) and they replaced his "Long will I tarry, ere I begin this war for gold" with him being hellbent on killing the dwarves. He seems to be this triology's Denethor - Dain and Bard becoming Kings of their respective mountains/towns (like not even a one second glimpse at them in some sort of king outfit??) I absolutely respect it if someone doesn't find these scenes important - even though I think they're essentual for character building/developement - but I would've preferred to have any of those scenes in the movie over the stuff that was added by PJ.

    They retconned the wizard council to be... something else. Instead of introducing the full council that defeated the necromancer, they just hashed in characters from the lord of the rings awkwardly. They also cut out the fact that it was the bird that told the guy where Smaug's weak spot is, that Bilbo sent. It was pretty significant.

    Just a note the characters that you said were not in the book actually were. About 1000 pages of the hobbit story had to be cut out because publishers at the time ( idiots ) told Tolkien that his book was too long and nobody would read it. But as the hobbit became so popular he decided to put the stories he cut out of the hobbit into the appendices of his next book which was the Lord of the Rings.

    To be fair...when he said that the movie was trying to be like LoTR with elements like the Ring, Gollum, the eagles, and the mountain....those were all in the original source material. If you DIDN'T include them, you wouldn't even be able to progress in the story. Plus, I preferred the extra time spent on the scenes. The fact that Bilbo doesn't jump right up to go to the Lonely Mountain shows how unwilling he actually was in the book.

    I understand that people like to complain how it's nothing like the book(even though it is, because Tolkien wanted to add from the appendices to the actual book "The Hobbit" himself from what I've read) and that these movies shouldn't have been 3 movies, but only one. But think about it...if we only got one 3-hour movie, they would cut stuff out rather than add making you more frustrated than them adding stuff. For example, when Gandalf leaves in "Desolation Of Smaug" you know exactly where he is in the movie, in Dol Guldur, but in the book you're like..."Where the heck is Gandalf"? And this was explained in the appendices. I would much rather see everything that was in the book PLUS more, rather than watch half the book get cut out for "Running Time" purposes.Also, on a semi-related note. I noticed that people like to complain about the CGI in these films, particularly the Orcs, but if you watch the B-Roll Footage for "Battle Of The Five Armies" there's clearly people in full out Orc Make-up which does in fact indicate that they're not CGI, people say that Peter Jackson hasn't put enough care in these films like he did LOTR(which I'm not going to compare because you're not supposed to) but he clearly did put a LOT of care into these films if you see the Behind-The-Scenes footage. Overall I love all of these films so much, and they all rank as some of my favorite films of all time, I haven't seen "Battle Of The Five Armies" yet, but I am VERY much anticipating its release.

    If the entire book of the hobbit had been condensed into one movie it would have been totally awful, so much would have been left out and it would have felt rushed and unfinished. Anyone who has actually read the books would understand this, the lord of the rings books are so much longer because the writing style is extremely different, there is much more detail and information on everything whereas the hobbit is a much shorter and easier read, and covers a lot more in a much shorter time.

    To all the people freaking out about either liking or not liking the books: Calm down already. I have loved the books since I was 10 years old - I'm 20 now and still love them. But I also really enjoy the movies - and although it's a little risky to cut 300 pages into three movies it was well done. The whole Hobbit movie is actually more of a nice thing for the fans to dream themselves into Middleearth again. It's about the world, not the freaking story - which is in fact exactly the thing Tolkien had in mind. Despite that: Who cares if some things were in the Silmarillion? Just suck in every scene on it's own and have your nerdgasm. If you want the story right, read the book. ;)

    Quite honestly, I embrace the existence of a Hobbit movie. I enjoy Middle Earth being fleshed out in all its beauty and any excuse to see Tolken's work turned into a movie is a winner in my book. What I DONT enjoy is the fact that it's being dragged out to three movies. Now that doesn't mean it should be condensed into one movie, far from it. Yes, the Hobbit is much smaller compared to the Lord of the Rings, but it still has A LOT of story and detail inside of it that one movie would have to skip over to make the time frame. So I embrace the idea of two movies rather than one or three. That way some scenes wouldn't have to be skipped over nor would they have to stretch out other scenes just to make it longer. You could easily take the two movies out now and condense it into one movie. And I have NO idea how they're going to have enough content for a third one. Unless they make it much shorter than the usual three hours. I mean, you got like big things left in the book now. The death of a dragon and a giant battle. How do you stretch that out to three hours?

  • @MyUselessOpinions

    I don't mind the trilogy myself. Tolkien wrote some of the backstory that is being used for these films. The big CGI orc is in the Tolkien lore, although he's already dead before the events of The Hobbit in the books. They kept him alive to have a villain for the first movie, which I can respect. They also changed over to his son in movie 2 because his son leads the orcs/goblins in the Battle of Five Armies at the end of The Hobbit, which they might have him do. I hope not though. The whole thing with Gandalf is their interpretation of stuff Gandalf talked about with Frodo in the LOTR books. There are some things they made up, but really they did the same thing to LOTR. In both trilogies they removed stuff that they felt didn't work and changed things in ways they might not have needed. For instance: Arwen was not in most of LOTR except in the appendices. I think a different character altogether gives Aragorn the necklace from Arwen. She shows up at like a dinner and the wedding unless I remember incorrectly. She might have had one or more showings between, but she never convinces Elrond to come help because Elrond already helps. Peter Jackson wanted her to fight at Helms Deep. If that isn't being unfaithful and pointlessly extending something then I don't know what is. These changes are sometimes for the better, such as ignoring the time skip after the birthday party. In the book, Frodo moved out of the shire and sold Bag End originally. Gandalf spends a long time researching the ring and for the last few years of that time he disappeared from Frodos life. They could have done it in the movies if they wanted to, but again it's respectable that they didn't. Pacing and all. However, I don't think they were very respectable to Merry and Pippin. They weren't scoundrels introduced stealing fireworks, Merry was one of Frodo's closest friends and advisers. Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Fatty (who wasn't even in the movies to my knowledge) all formed a conspiracy and learn about the Ring behind Frodo's back in order to help him. In the movie they all leave by one big coincidence. That drastically changes their reasons for being in the movie. They really didn't have to go any further than Bree in the movies and really had no motivation to go further. I mean really, they were never even told about the danger up until they left with the fellowship. I guess we can assume it happened off screen, but they made it a joke that Pippin had no clue where they were going to go. I mean... really? In the book they acknowledged the danger and still said they'd follow. In the movies they were just bumbling sidekicks for the first movie. It wasn't really necessary and wasn't how they did it in the book. I could probably go on, but this has gotten too long. Also, my atrocious spelling of Tolkien's names and such probably make eyes bleed. The point is: The Hobbit trilogy is exactly like the LOTR trilogy. Neither are faithful and both do a lot that isn't needed, but the perception of "The Hobbit" is that it needs to be shorter because it has a shorter base. I don't think they should have condensed it into two movies unless they just didn't have the material, but maybe I'm alone in that. *shrug* Some of the stuff they have to cover in 3: (Based off stuff in LOTR and the movies and the hobbit book that i remember:) - The dragon has to be killed. Bard has to be released from prison for that. - The dwarves in Laketown have to get under the mountain or might not stand with Thorin as he didn't let them come on the journey. - Legolas is chasing ... I think his name is Bolg ... who is the leader of the orcs in the upcoming battle. That has to be resolved. Perhaps that will lead to the elves inclusion in the war. - They will probably resolve the whole "Master of Lake Town" and evil henchman thing after the dragon attack. - During the peace they have to barter with Thorin as they slew the dragon and deserve a share of the gold for their suffering. Thorin will likely break his promise that the town would share in his wealth. - Any infighting among the dwarves in the mountain. I forget his name but the one who told Thorin he wasn't himself during the 2nd movie may not like his stance. - Galadriel, Saruman, and Radagast have to rescue Gandalf and work with him to drive Sauron out of Mirkwood (this is official LOTR stuff even if they change the details) - We don't know what will happen with the elf girl - The other dwarf armies who were not helping them must be summoned to the mountain. As they refused to aid them there may be some more to it than originally stated. - The battle has five armies. It will probably last quite a while. The battle rages on after the eagles show up so I definitely hope they include the whole battle and not just what Bilbo saw of it. If it ends with "The eagles are coming!" I will be most disappointed. - Thorin and Bilbo will have to resolve their differences before Thorin dies. - They will probably add some small things to Bilbo's return home. - Gandalf will probably learn of the ring and make Bilbo tell him the truth about it as he mentioned he had to do so in Fellowship. (to incorporate early printings of The Hobbit he said that Bilbo lied and told them that Gollum gave it to him as a present) - They will probably show a little of Sauron building up his power in Mordor at the end. - Gandalf could hunt down Gollum for the first time and leave him with the elves. I'm fairly sure he does that and then Gollum escapes and Gandalf lets him go (much to his later regret). Perhaps this will happen in the peace time before the battle, although they might not do it at all. It'd be a nice way to include Gollum in the last movie. - The whole thing will probably end with another flash forward, hopefully in Rivendel, where Bilbo finishes the book. They might just go back to Bag End but I'd like them to actually jump to where he finished the book. Maybe even show some of Frodo's return journey to Hobbiton where Bilbo gives him the book. He didn't take it to Mordor with him. ;) - Anything new they add that references something I don't know about.

    In one of my favorite books he summarizes the first LotR trilogy as "It's a story about a furry-footed guys who goes to throw his uncles ring down a hole in the ground." XD

    I can never watch lord of the rings stuff because I always fall asleep. I still haven't gotten past the singing in this movie. Once I get to the singing I'm always tired and then the singing starts and I fall asleep. It's the only franchise that does that to me for some reason. Good honest trailer!

    I should be outraged how you can diss The Hobbit but instead I was howling with laughter. Just wonderful.

    "Lazy birds" indeed! I loved the movie though, and I'm getting the extended version real soon. For Tolkein fans, these movies are great. The original trilogy could've been even longer. The Hobbit was certainly padded with lots of appendix material, but I'm glad Peter Jackson has given me at least two more movies to look forward to seeing. There aren't many movies I look forward to seeing anymore these days. Just be sure to watch in standard def!

    Yeah I absolutely loved this movie. People who are just casual fans don't get it, but this is what I've been waiting for. A movie that actually follows the book it was adapted from.
