Jacob was very cool, and he was very cute with Porpentina's sister, Queenie. I really liked having a muggle character who held up to all the craziness around him. I thought Newt was shy and attached to his menagerie but not as empathic with people - which made him seem much more realistic in context, but not as appealing to the movie audience. Porpentina was also very believable - but not especially likable. Ditto the Magical Congress - you could imagine it existing like that, but it wasn't a place I'd ever want to visit! All in all, enjoyed the filmand Newt's antics with his creatures, but it was kinda darker than it needed to be. I really hope they bring Jacob and Queenie back - and add many more truly likable characters. Hopefully Newt will be more approachable next time.

I really loved Newt's character. He's sweet, soft-spoken and happily takes on the maternal role without any cracks about how that's not "manly". Also, ACCIO DOESN'T WORK ON LIVING BEINGS. OTHERWISE YOU COULD JUST ACCIO ANYONE FROM ANYWHERE.

It's not a TV show, but there's a very good book series by Ben Aaronovitch (there are graphic novels as well) of which the first in the series is called Rivers of London. It's about a young police constable in London who becomes a magical apprentice to an inspector who also happens to be the last practicing wizard in England. The magical elements are kind of subtle (or at least relative to Harry Potter and other straight-fantasy series; what I mean is you won't see hippogriffs clambering out of every wall) but they're there and the narration is so entertaining anyway that you don't actually need constant weird shit happening to be entertained (that being said, there is quite a lot of weird shit that goes down). It's also a very honest portrayal of London, which obviously makes me biased towards it because I live there, though I'd honestly recommend it to anyone. It's just that good.

I agree with the fact that Jacob steals the show just by reacting to things. 😂😂 I thought I was gonna hate him, but he's just so lovable!

I'm just gonna leave here that personally I found Newt way more relatable than Harry as a character and that if done correctly this series has the potential for a great plotline to add to this franchise including mastermind Greendelwald and young Dumbeldore. Howgarts was fun but it's over, you can't expect J. K. Rowling to write the same story twice. I actually loved this movie very much.

I don't even need him as grindelwald. Just let him stay Graves... Graves was a total badass, I loved that guy. Making him grindelwald to me just makes him less mysterious. Before that he was somewhat ambiguous, interesting, evil yeah, but still somehow likeable. grindelwald ist just... I mean sure, a canon character from the books, powerful and important but... we know him already.

2:39 Well he has a point, according to my acting teacher Joey Tribbiani, a very important part of acting is reacting, which doesn't mean acting again.

To be honest, this movie never seemed like the start to a Newt Scamander franchise and more like an elaborate ruse with Newt as a fakeout protagonist to actually start a franchise about Grindelwald and his inevitable duel with Dumbledore. Wouldn't even be surprised if it turns out Newt doesn't have a big role in the sequels and just some cameos here and there.

Wurzelknecht that's..... actually exactly what this is. The franchise is the story of Grindelwald's rise and eventual defeat. Newt and Dumbledore happen to have a place in that story, so there ya go. The films will not always center on either of them, but on whoever is involved at any given time, from what I understand.

Agreed. I watched it yesterday in 3D and the only character's I found myself interested in (and wanting to see more of) was Colin Farrell's and the plot with Ezra Miller.

I love this movie, the muggle was my favourite character.

Kowalski was the only character I wanted more of and they just have to wipe his fucking memory and ensure we never see him again.

+Gwen Dolly I'm sure in the book he started to remember things. Unfortunately I don't have it with me now so I can't say for sure, but him touching the bitemark at his neck (in movie and book. They are pretty much the same anyway) and smiling at her was a pretty obvious sign to me, so it didn't feel like an open ending. But I guess people can see that differently^^

Seems people are new here or just don't get what "Honest" trailers is about. For the most part they poke fun at movies even if they actually were really good. In spite of that being they weren't as harsh on this movie actually makes me want to watch it more because I still have yet to see it.

The problem is they're being harsh very selectively. Most noticably in the more recent ones where they do make jokes but are not really critical most of the time. You can tell where their biases are.

I love all the honest trailers but I did actually think that Fantastic Beasts and where to find them was amazing! I think quite a lot of people loved it as well. Can't wait for the next movie!

So we got 8 movies about a Gryffindor main character, 5 movies coming about a Hufflepuff main character and a play about a Slytherin main character but Ravenclaw house? When will Ravenclaw get some love?

pretty sure newt isn't really in the next movies much. apparently this one was to set up a sequel about the grindelwald era (at least that's what i read).

I actually really liked this movie? I loved Newt's personality, mainly because I find it very similar to my own: quiet when around other people, really into strange things (in Newt's case- Magical creatures. In my case, real creatures.) and a softspoken person. And I understand why Newt said his creatures weren't dangerous. I'd probably do the same if someone was trying to take away my personal tiny zoo filled with crocodiles and venomous reptiles. I guess what I'm trying to say is this movie may not be Harry Potter, but I still think it has great potential! I loved seeing all the magic creatures in it.

So did the honest trailers guys (like the movie). It's so strange to me that people STILL don't get what "honest trailers" are LOL. But yeah, obviously Newt was shy and docile, he was a zoologist. He has to be submissive to survive with animals, so naturally, that follows over into humans, seeing as he spends majority of his time with animals. He even hunches over and everything the way you would when approaching a big animal to show you weren't a threat. Eddy Redmane (I butchered that, I know) definitely knew what he was doing, just not everyone "got it".

Yes, but Newt travels from England to America at the beginning of the movie. The character isn't American, he's British, so it shouldn't be a problem that he's played by a British actor.

wait, help me out here - you're both teasing the movie for being yet another franchise related to Harry Potter, and then for not having the old main characters, not being in hogwarts, not being in britain, etc etc so it's both too desperate to belong _and_ too much its own thing? ;D personally I loved it - the movie both gives me more of the Harry Potter _world,_ more magic, more pretty creatures etc, but it also refrains from pulling a Voldemort-returns or yet-another-Harry-Potter-adventure etc. The books ended, the story was concluded, I like that they leave it at that

GryphonSkull They weren‘t teasing it for not having the same characters/ settings they were teasing it because (allegedly) the new characters/ settings are not as good as the old ones, making you miss the classic Hogwarts setting. („Can we go back to Hogwarts?“)

I personally enjoy the new Fantastic Beasts franchise right now. It really expands the wizarding world beyond the confines of Hogwarts. It’s like growing up and leaving home for the first time, venturing out into a world that’s unfamiliar, but you can always go back home if you really want to. I like Newt more as a protagonist rather than Harry, mainly because I was too young at the time of Sorcerer’s stone. But I found myself relating to Newt more because we’re both shy, care deeply for our own passions that others would rather we didn’t, and we keep ourselves out of the spotlight as much as we can.

@@wowsoeasyfood1147 Maybe he will be more important later. To me, it really didn't seem like anyone other than Grindwald was important in the second film. It felt less like a film and more like a way of giving a ton of information to the audience and setting things up for the third one. Maybe it will be Newt who will make sure the duel between Dumbledore and Grindwald is able to happen, since they can't duel now because of the pendant with the blood. They need to undo it to be able to duel.

I can't think of a good name Just why him though? So far, he’s just a zookeeper. An adorable one sure. But there’s nothing linking him to the main plot. And if he does end up playing a bigger role too, I don’t know, it’ll feel a bit forced. Because, in part two, even scenes that had nothing to do with him, he’d just happen to end up there, simply because he’s supposed to be the protagonist. His presence seemed very irrelevant throughout part two and yet he’d just end up being in places where actual players would be.

I am not a native English speaker and always prefer to have English subtitles on when watching films so I can read if I don't understand what is being said, but went to see Fantastic Beasts in cinema without any subtitles and missed almost everything Eddie Redmayne said. It was completely incoherent to me D:
