Chromatek water pens got me started on watercolor painting. My Mom is a trained artist, who has had her own paintings shown in gallery setting. She is trained in Asian styles and Chinese styles of watercolor. She loved the Chromatek pens that I was able to show her on my last visit home. She used to spend so much time mixing her colors for watercolor painting. One thing we both like is the color selection on the 30 Chromatek set (27 actual colors + 3 brush pens). The water rush pens do spread out; e.g., handy when painting bamboo because of the flare towards the beginning and end of each bamboo segment. I went ahead and bought the small set of actual Chromatek tubes of watercolor paints. Again, as with the pens, Chromatek supplies a pad of 140# paper with faint outlines of objects to paint; each paint exercise corresponds to a free Chromatek watercolor tutorial. The only thing I did not like was the plastic mixing wells/palette that was supplied, however, porcelain mixing wells would be too hard to ship. Chromatek supplies three synthetic brushes with the kit, a#1 for fine detail, a #8 for painting larger areas, painting a “grad” or gradation from dark to light, and a nice flat tipped brush for broad landscape work. I decided to buy the Arteeza pens, but perhaps I just wasn’t used to the pens, but the colors were a lot more runny to work with. I also bought Arteeza paper, which I prefer over the student grade Chromatek paper. I’m not at the point where I would buy the professional grade Arches paper yet, so the Arteeza paper is fine (it’s 100% cotton rag). I’m a retired dentists, who was also trained as a dental technician and spent a few extra years after dental school in a prosthodontic post graduate specialty program, where I learned how to use brushes and instruments to hand sculpt porcelain crowns and veneers. I was really happy to find several Windsor Newton watercolor brushes in my old porcelain kit! The Chromatek brushes have more spring and hold a point a bit nicer, but I really like the hand tied sable hair brushes also! If you are interested in watercolor painting, and need a new hobby during the pandemic, go for it! The free Chromatek tutorials are available for traditional watercolor painting and for painting with the water pens for FREE! No purchase required. Now all I have to do is get a hold of double thickness Japanese rice paper and some goat hair pens for Chinese style watercolor painting…just kidding! Have fun!

YAAAAAAY!!! A trusted review of the watercolor pens I have been eyeing for the past month! :D It did look like the yellows were a bit over saturated on the photo swatches, that pear yellow looked so pretty in your swatch comparatively. These pens will be "magically" appearing in my fiancé's amazon prime shopping basket for early Mother's day gift purchases. *sneaky grin*

I received the set of 30 Chromatek pens for Christmas and loved them! Unfortunately the went dry or ran out of ink only weeks after I started used them. I didn't even complete the samples. Contacted the company and twice posted nicely on the Face book page asking what to do of if others had the problem. The Face book posts were immediately deleted and I have had no response from Chromatek. I got them out today again because I really do like them. I have tried wetting the tips and setting them upright but nothing works.

I'm surprised you blended with a brush, and not with the water brushes included in the set. It might've avoided those drying lines.

I think the more precise term for the tips of these brush pens would be a "soft bristle tip". nice video Amanda ;)

the way these brushes blend is highly dependent on the paper you use. it works amazing on the paper that came in my 50 brush set and looks similar to how it looks in this video. on my blick watercolor paper, however, it's ineffective and hardly activates at all

Comparing it to Arteza pens, what can you say about them? Chromatic pens are good the way I understood it in your opinion, although, they are in a drier side (but not DRIED pens as stated at Amazon?). Love your review. I am actually eyeing on these pens. Just a little discouraged based on the bad reviews it has at Amazon.

You should probably do staining test with colors that are not staining! And these markers are not made with real pigment..they are dye based..meaning they will all stain. I understand its hard to do a watercolor review if you are not a watercolors artist. Being a letter artist your knowledge in material isn't as precise as it should be. This video is very misleading and should have a disclaimer.
