Fantastic Negrito is a man’s truth told in the form of black roots music. Each song is a real story about a musician from Oakland who experienced the highs of a million dollar record deal, the lows of a near fatal car accident that put him in a four-week coma, and is now in the phase of rebirth despite his playing hand being mangled. Negrito’s music emphasizes rawness and space. Slide guitar, drums, piano. Rather than update the Delta Blues, Fantastic Negrito leaves the original sounds of Lead Belly and Skip James intact, building bridges to a modern sound with loops and samples of his own live instruments. But the primary element that drives Fantastic Negrito’s music is uncut realness and zero concern for “pop” anything.

not sure if you guys know that he was in a coma for weeks, and his right hand barely works.. That is part of the reason of the simplicity, it used to be a lot less simple for him, but it's partially not by choice. I saw him with Chris Cornell twice, he is great, and has a wonderful voice..

This is my first KZread comment ever! You are just sooo talented that I had to make a comment! As a 40 year old Black American, in my most humble opinion, you are the first Black artist since the 80s that has presented Black music with sooo much power and dignity. When I listen to your music, I hear the spirit of our Ancestors: the spirit of suffering, resilience, slave spirituals, gospel, blues, soul, heart, truth, and spirituality. For decades, I have felt that modern day Black artists have greatly insulted the Black musical legacy of the ancestors that came before them. We have allowed the modern day music industry to pimp out our natural given gift from God and our beautiful culture to something that has become Extremely vulgar and shameful...all for the mighty dollar. If you grew up in the 80s as I did, you experienced Black artists that had what I called "Musical Superhero Powers"...ex: Prince and Michael Jackson. Also in the 80s and prior, Black music had so much magic and soul. For the first time in decades, you are the first artist that I have heard that possesses this "magic and soul". Thank you so much for your musical dignity and honesty and carrying the torch of our Ancestors so beautifully.

Hi! I'm a 46yo man born in Oakland & drive the streets of Oakland every day. I randomly came across this song a year ago and been a favorite in my Spotify playlist. But I hadn't really "looked into" until this morning, when I woke up with this song stuck in my head. Come to find out you're out of Oakland and very accomplished! If you read this, like I said, I drive the streets of Oakland every day, all hours, and have played this song 100 times without knowing, down International at 2 AM, and it felt very personal, almost like an anthem. I read some people don't understand the lyrics, but every line spoke crystal clear to me from the moment I heard them. So, if you read this, thanks for writing such a good song, it really spoke to me, and you do Oakland proud 🤙

I generally don't comment when everybody has already said what I already feel about this song .What this song means to me, I love it ,because it is old style blues with a twist I like it in its raw and sexy contours not damaged with a lot of hoopla that this world likes to throw in it, this song means to me the spiritual struggle a raw truth of a pained past hoping that heals one day it denotes that it should have taken another path then the one it chose which put an end to the life of the writer. Brilliantly done with soul and feeling as it should be.

With just your voice and guitar your ability to compose and share your vision makes someone on KZread feel like they are intimately in the same room with you and makes one's head resonate with the feelings pouring out of your soul. I am inspired to pick up my guitar today and walk the street, to live life cynimaticly and create a soundtrack to my life. Than you

Hey man. Real tight stuff you got here. I listened to all of "The Last Days of Oakland" and "Nothing Without You" is definitely my favorite. Keep making music, you'll always have, at least me, listening over and over. (NJ btw, your music got across the country!)

You got a lot of soul and your music hits in the heart, keep at it. Comin to outside lands and more excited to see you than most artists on that list. You got feeling to your voice and your lyrics, you are exactly what music should be. Keep at it, some fans from CA
