For the aspiring wannabes applying for medicine: 1. Do not be a doctor unless you do not mind having interrupted sleep. Few specialities will offer you uninterrupted sleep. Even when you are a consultant you might still get a call in the middle of the night from your registrar . If you go private, there’s no underlings so you have to personally go back to the hospital in the middle of the night . You think it doesn’t matter cos you’re still young , but uninterrupted sleep is such a luxury as you grow older . 2. Medicine takes up a lot of your time . When you go home you have to read up on journals , do research , etc . If you have other interests it’s difficult to find time for them. Certain specialties will give you more time to pursue a more balanced life 3. Medicine is not as meritocratic as it seems. Mopex / residency placements are often through connections . And of course not forgetting the politics . 4. Don’t go into medicine for the huge bucks - that’s the finance industry . Medicine does offer a stable employment with above average pay and the option of flexible working hours

I think another layer of stress on med school exams is that students are obliged to get good grades; whereas for people like myself, I don't mind getting poor grades like C, B-, B. Scholarships require students to get good grades, and I think that it's likely that med students feel that every morsel of knowledge taught and grades validation are tied to making less mistakes in their future career.

Class of 2017 here. Best advise is go enjoy yourself. Go holidays with friends and family, stop wasting your time doing too much research. It doesn't matter for most people in the end. Life circumstances takes you to places, you will realise how unfair residency/mopex placement is.

Thanks for the insight into medsku! i just got accepted into both LKC and YLL, and i'm already feeling jitters, like will i be able to fit in and find a group of friends there? will i be able to cope? From a senior to a junior, do you have any wise words/ words of inspiration and motivation? on a more practical note, why did you choose NUS?
