Honda XR650R review: bring back the big red pig, Mr Honda!︱Cross Training Enduro
Спорт
From www.crosstrainingenduro.com The big red pig, also known as the Honda XR650R. Some have called it the world's best dirt bike that flopped because it was released at the wrong time. Released in 2000, it replaced the hugely successful XR600 which began in 1985. The 600 was a prime example of what the Japanese could achieve back in the days when they were passionate about making the best dirt bikes, instead of being controlled by their accountants nowadays. For years it was THE bike for desert racing and kept winning at Baja relentlessly, until eventually the lighter more powerful Kawasaki KX500 entered the scene. Let's check it out in this Honda XR650R review.

The XR650R was a completely new bike, with a much more powerful engine in an alloy frame and a dry weight of only 130kg. It continued to win many of the desert races but the timing sucked. The age of the 450 four stroke enduro bike had arrived and the market was moving toward these lighter more nimble bikes instead of desert racing models. Sadly production of the XR650R was cancelled in 2008 and in its place was the emasculated XR650L - way less power, way more weight and dicky suspension.
The Honda XR650R big red pig has a strong fan base today and you can see why. It produced so much power but was matched with incredible reliability, along with handling and suspension that puts most of the current big bore four strokes to shame. Currently the only high performance big bore four stroke is the KTM 690 and many argue Honda would take a huge chunk of their market share if the XR650R was released again but with an electric button. I'm one of the many people who were disappointed with the KTM 690 and would love to see a much more reliable well designed Japanese equivalent on the market. This Honda XR650R review firmly believes the big red pig should be brought back.
Could the Honda XR650R sell again today? There's a strong dual sport market, and the rapidly expanding adventure bike market. And there are many riders buying bikes like the DR650 and modifying them to be more like the XR650R. The most common issues with the XR650R today would be its tall seat height, the small fuel tank and no electric start. A redesigned seat could make the bike a tad lower. There are still aftermarket tanks around but a bigger tank would not be hard for Honda to design. And Honda actually did an electric start version for their 650 quad so that's an easy fix.
"if Honda started building the XR650R again, but made it with electric start, a 6th gear, and made it street legal, they would sell the hell out of that bike."
- Chuck Wallace
Sadly the Japanese brands are happy to let the European brands be the innovators nowadays so it is very unlikely we'll see the Honda XR650R big red pig brought back. Which is sad as it's one hell of a big bore thumper that deserves to live on. We hope you've enjoyed this Honda XR650R review.

Looking at a dyno sheet of a xr650r the torque curve starts very low and is flatter than my wife's chest after that. I have never seen such a nice torque curve..so smooth!
Bought one three years ago, finally, found it 1200km away in Italy...iconic bike...don't understand why everyone crying about 6th gear, electric start and FI...if you can't kick it,start another hobby, something like neating or join a book club..:) Supermoto during summer, enduro by winter and fall...one bike for everything..never gonna sell it..
i have a xr400 (little red pig) shes a 2001 never been pulled apart with 21.000km still going strong. from being a farm bike to a work commuter its done it all
I loving these older bike vids! So I grew up inin oregon in the mid 80s. Many bikes over the years. When I was 12 got my first big thumper. Yamaha TT 500. Beast! Upgraded it on scrap yard bike parts. Then in about 91 got my first xr600! Putting many trophies in my dad's garage with it. Scott summers was my idol. For years I dreamt of a water cooled honda to come out and show the 4strokes of Europe how it was done. Husaberg, huskavarna, others were so far out of reach for us. Then dirt rider or dirt bike mag put out the artistic photo of a possible water cooled 4stroke honda! Couldn't wait! A couple years went by. Got out of racing they released the bike never got to ride one till several years later. Wish I had one.
I really miss mine, It had a better carburator, sharper cam, a nice aftermarket exhaust, bigger air intake, racing clutch, xenon lighting, digital speedometer and revcounter. Springs were stiffer and shock absorbers "nozzles" were upgraded. I also had the bigger desert fuel tank and three different wheel setups, ice, tarmac and dirt. Needed money for my newborn son. I even drove it in an enduro competition.

If you buy something in good shape where the owner kept good records it`ll last a lot more then 20k Km...Do a compression test and go over the bike really well(fine tooth comb)..There`s no reason a used XR650R in good shape won`t give you 50,000 miles or for you 80,000 Km(i`v seen a few with 100k Km with maybe one rebuild) as long as you don`t beat on it..I think I`m selling both of mine as a package deal, not sure yet..I hate to do it but sometimes life has other plans for you..lol...I have one with @3500Km(@2100miles) and the other has under 10,000Km(@8000miles)......

Awesome, pull the trigger !
I bought a new one and parked it in 2003. I'm pulling it out now to do BDR routes in USA. Full conversion. Plated with Baja Design, new LED headlight, Tailtech radiator fan, Tail tech spedo/h2o tep, rpm gauge. Heavy springs by race tech front/read. replaced fork/shock seals. Custom stiffening of sub frame for new giant loop soft luggage. New renthal high bend cr bars with bar riser/move forward units. Stator wound from stock 80watt single circuit to 2ea. 125 watt circuit. USB/cig charging station. Key switch. Seat concepts ADV seat. rejet/ remove emission EGR unit. An IMS 3.5 gal. tank. Just have to worry about starting. A lot of youtubes out there show it is a process but easy. I hope so. I've got some time and $ invested in it. Coming from MX racing and serious off roadind Desert/ enduro racing District 36 in SoCal I'm scared of the ADV bikes. This is a pretty big bike but should be safe and super fun to ride compared to my friends new KTM890ADV R.

Sounds great Erik!
I hired a 650R in South America. Fell in love straight away. An open country spaceship! Purchased one on my return home, and still have it.
love to see reborn of xr650R again with more power #bigger tank.electric start. Modern mods.
Going to pick one up tomorrow thats already street legal. I found my unicorn!
Just picked one up for a fair price. Street legal. Man. You cannot overstate this engine! I'm in love.
Had a 2001, bike was awesome, regret selling it to this day. I even had it titled for the street
I learned riding enduro on a 600 and still regret letting it go. Guys with their fancy enduro bikes always looked at me like I was crazy, till I tractored past them on the climbs :-D Have to agree on the innovation bit though. They should make Europeans play catch-up. We are thankful to the Europeans for keeping the 2T's around though. If it depended on the Japanese, it would be a different story.
Had my BRP 5 weeks , ridden it twice so far ,I'm in love again ,, few more mods and I'll be on her everyday, what a bike wow

Do you still have it
Went for a ride last weekend with some guys. Rode up to the top on my 200 XC-W where there is an old rock quarry, I was feeling pretty pleased with myself (not a super difficult ride up but steep and rocky with some good ledges to get up) Then we come around the corner into the quarry and there it is, a 1000cc Honda Africa Twin sitting there waiting for us. He had just came up the same way we did and rode with us the rest of the day.

I had one a few years back. Loved it.
Doing 250kms of nice West Aussie sand this Sat on my '03 XR650R. Can't bloody wait !
As formidable and marketable as the KTM 690 has proven and the growth of the adventure market, I'm just a little surprised Honda hasn't at least floated the idea of a CRF650l. Slimed down, fuel injected, of course and electric start like everything else. packaged in at least a decade newer frame and suspension. All good fun at a Honda price!

The pig eats everything you throw at it!
I have an 07 650 r and it has been bulletproof. Also, once you uncork it and rejet it you’re fine. Starts first kick every time. There is a system to it though
Almost bought one last spring, lack of e start is the only reason I passed on it. I've been regretting that decision ever since.
I had an 04 BRP. Sold it recently and I miss it. I used to complain about having to kick and it being too powerful for smaller technical trails, too big, too heavy, yada yada. Now I realize it was really my skills suffering. If I was a better rider, whatever bike I ride becomes a much better bike.
Very enjoyable, bring the big beast back. Had the 1985 model, wish I had kept it.
Very sad , I actually modified mine as at the time in 2009 I couldn’t find an adventure bike light enough to meet my needs, so i fitted an 18 litre IMS tank , a seat concepts seat , an eagle screen , and a Boechat moto Electric start Swiss Honda conversion kit , ( these are now nil stock ) as the bike was discontinued . I still have the bike and love it . My Tenere 700 is awesome , but for hard core really technical adventure riding The lighter Xr is hard to beat .You are 100 % correct in saying that if Mr Honda brought back an electric start , fuel injection version of this bike to comply with emission ADRs then Honda would sell these like sausages , for sure . I have discussed this with Honda at the highest levels including Mr Stuart Strickland MD of Honda many years ago , but unfortunately my pleas fell on deaf ears 😢
I had no idea a 650 could make so many happy.
With everything focused on the “NEW” it is nice to see this kind of story evolve. My reality is I have done something similar to an older Yamaha TT 350 ( now 380 ). With upgrades and engineering it’s hilarious to compete against tweens and outrun them. The enduro monster actually works, longer and with more sponsors.
I want this bike more and more!
Just thinking about the possibility of Honda bringing back a 650 dual sport makes me and my money moist.. #drool
I had one of the trx700xx quads with the xr650 motor design base. They stroked it for more low end torque due to the 500 pound quad. That was one monster of a machine

LOVED my XX. regret selling it big time
I liked mine, I really thought it was a lot more nimble than the KTM. I love the seat height, it's a nice bike for taller people.
Some magical force allowed me to purchase a lightly used street tagged xrr earlier this year. It is a wheelie beast on the street, hopefully she won't kill me.
A easy way to drop about 25 lbs. was to do away with the stock exhaust! I had 2 600s rode & raced them both & won many enduros !! Wish I could find a good 1994 XR 600 R
I had one of these years ago and liked it for what it was- a beautiful piece of engineering, sadly lacking in crucial details such as pumper carb, e-start and usd forks. While it was way too much bike for singletrack it was the best dune bike I have ever ridden. I keep toying with the idea of buying another and I can't say that about too many of the bikes I have owned.
They should bring it back as a rally model like they did with the 250
not at all disappointed after 56,000km with a 2015 690 I admit that I would really be up for a new 650 xrr if it has the qualities of the old one...and a real dashboard with a rev counter
Had an 1981 xr 500 back in the day, I was 15 yrs old.
When y'all get a chance review the xr400r and the xr250r! Subscribed!
thankyou this review is gold
I gotta BRP tagged, I ride it everywhere from single track to the gas station . Throw a carb / jet kit with air box mod , exhaust and you got a bad pig . Love my XR
That thing seems like a beast!
I own a 95 xr250r never rode a bike before it but when I got it it didn't run for 2 years and it sat outside cleaned the carb and started in like 2 kicks and been obsessed with it since it keeps up with 450s on tighter trails and doesn't disappoint on straight always awesome bike and extremely reliable

I just did the Woodville GP MX3 class on my BRP. Mines been converted for mx with a CRF front end on. Did all the big jumps and was told I was holding down 10th place for a while before my arms figuratively exploded 😂.
I have a 84 xr500r. It was way ahead of its time I think and was faster than the xl600/650 and was basically a xr600 that was easier to start and a little nicer to drive. Rated at 41hp and 269lbs dry its a lot of fun. It will probably last forever. They should bring it back or the almost identical xr400. The old xr350 was a awesome bike. 250 is almost always to small and 650 is a pig. A nice 350-500cc air cooled dual sport would be awesome
I have a 2001. I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat. E-start, USD fork, FI and it would be awesome!

Weve been over here just waiting for a new cr250r kx250 motocrosser or an x type off road model cr250/kx250 for years. Get in line fellas!
How about the YZ 490 haha. I have an 83 with the 4 speed! It's so fun taking it on the tight twistys through the desert! It's such a beast to start though. It's makes you have better clutch control not letting it die. I wish an electric start big bore 2-stroke would be made!
If Honda make these again I'm defo buying one new, I really miss mine and my current 22 crf450 is nothing like as good
It only needed a radiator fan and different fork valving, it was rather easy to kick start.
Far out hell yea I own a 2001brp and I love my beast kicking it over sends a smile over my face that deep rumble sound of the fire breathing dirt spitting tarmac chewing thrill ride and mine road legal in nz but I am looking for any kiwi brp riders out there
Beta just did a demo day at pacific park, there new bikes are bloody amazing
I have to say the 650L started in 92 and has remained unchanged but it is heavy as F
Good looking awesome thumper ...love it
That sounds exactly like what I was looking for when I got my Beta.
Can you get or do a review on the WR or YZ400F? They're a very good bike. I absolutely love mine.
Still have one only it's in sm trim, and would never let it go
You know what would be neet and cool?! If they fully upgraded the xr650r engine , and then put it in the frame of a race bike like like a crf450r , so a 650cc built engine , in the frame of a race bike , would be fast , and just epic , be called crf700r , beat a 450r anyday!

I gots me a Big Red Pig. Teknik motorsports suspension and a TM40 Mikuni transformed it. I love it and will probably never sell it simply because I have so much money in it and it's always there for big open road trips. But there is no way getting around it. She's BIG and She's HEAVY. Went riding in the Watagans with the nephew at Christmas. KTM 200exc is looking really really attractive. Or if I win the lotto, a lovely new Beta 200..... :-)
Ill take a used $3,500 XR650R, and $3000.00 worth rebuild and mods all day long everyday. I'll have saved $4,000 and end up with a bike that will run right with or surpass the KTM. On top of that it will be bullet or proof and run trouble free for the next 20 years.

Love the BRP!
can you do a petition worldwide to bring back the Honda xr650R ? With an electric start.
The japanese need to make a new generation 650cc enduro bike, similar sized engine to the te610 to make them light weight and super quick, weight is always a factor offroad and new engineered 4stroke would do the trick, alloy frame, along with new styling!
What about TTR600? I think it is a good lower-seat alternative, and it exists with e-starter.
I weigh 130lbs and ride drz 400, do I need a new bike or gains?
Bring back the Yamaha Big Wheel
I’ve owned this bike at two different points in life. Loved it both times. But, if I’m honest, I don’t believe it has anything on the current KTM and Husky 500cc models. Other than providing similar performance with far less cost.

5k in performance ups to my 2019 DR650 and it works good......but not as good as my 03 650r with about 600 bux in performance ups. went on trade for a Biesemeyer flat bottom which I sunk...twice. This proved that the honda turned much sharper than the drag boat.

If you're out of video ideas it would be great to see some reviews of anything really. And if you're really looking for ideas I've been thinking of buying a Kawasaki versys 650 and dualsporting it with a big front tyre, and a diet. It's a cheap fairly reliable bike, for dual sport. If they remade this bike they need to give it both a kick start and a electric. If they can't give it both and only one stick with the kick start. And stick with the carborator. It don't need efi or and just a electric start. To me that's the best two things it's got on it.
Can someone please settle something I'm having trouble with. Is it true 2000 was the year all XR650R changed? Meaning that any XR650R after 2000 would be an aluminum frame water cooled and anything prior to 2000 was the steel frame air cooled? Because I'm looking at a 2002 to purchase that is the newer version but my brother swears he has a 2002 that is air cooled steel frame. Is my brother wrong? Did Honda, after 2000, make water cooled 650's and air cooled 600's? Your input would be appreciated.
@OsadabwaMoto

If it's air cooled with a steel frame and 650cc, it's a XR650L. The 650L is a capable bike and comes with an e-start, but it's not a Big Red Pig. The XR650R new platform built by Honda to race the Baja 1000. It had an aluminum frame, water cooled race engine and very good suspension for desert racing. They were no longer made after 2007.

@CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS what are you shorter then Rob lang? is that even possible? i thought the xr650r sat too low to the ground my self considering you only have a wopping 12ich of ground clearence being the lowest sitting Xr on the market i found i was rubbing skid plate on my xr650 then i ever did on the xr400 or xr 600 ive owned all 3 and in my opnion the xr600 is hands down the best just because its not liquid cooled that was the only down side about the xr650r that its liquid cool much rather have its air cooled sister the 650L
Honda Corporation is ssooooo conservative that it afflicts its motorcycle division. We do see, however, spurts of blazing Big Red, such as Baba's Fireblades, the late 00s CBRs, and the new AT. When Honda decides to invest in motos, they be kicking like karate! Hopefully, the Honda's bean counters will do the financial matrices and realize that cutting into the KTM's big thumper market is very profitable. But Honda don't half ass a new XR700R/XR700A/XR700SM!!
yeah, it's sad - after years with Japanese bikes I had to buy ktm :(
Can you pull the Estarter out of the quad and put start in the 650r???

It was in the 400 models.
Ive been beaten by a 500 but it was 50/50 if they'd blow the top end doing it.
