Honda Xl600r Basket Case Rebuild Part 1: Top End Inspection

Complete top end assessment for a 1987 Honda XL600r that has burned through a camshaft. Using parts from my years of collecting, I have almost everything to rebuild it except for a few small items and the major gaskets. As part of the tear down, I explain the role of every single part, how to check them for wear and show you the points of failure common to these engines. This includes the valve cover and rocker arms, they camshaft and bearings, the cylinder head, valves, piston, rings and measuring the bore. There is also a section outlining the difference in the cylinder heads from the early to the later models.
The intent of these videos is to help beginners understand how these bikes work and how to fix them when they don't! By using used parts and simple tools, it is possible to do a lot of the work yourself and keep the cost of repairs to a minimum. Glad I found this channel, as I just got home a 1986 XL600, it came in boxes just like Yours. Have never done any work on Hondas, only veteran Triumph and BSAs :)

As long as it’s complete, you’ll be fine. Honda is very smart about how they built these bikes. There’s really only one way that things can go back together. Find a free copy of the service manual and get exploded parts diagrams, then take your time, make sure you have everything and put it all back together. It’s almost certainly going to need top end parts
