    Great explanation. Very common issue on the K-series engines. Often misdiagnosed as starter not disengaging after starting car. This like you mentioned predominantly happens in cold weather, and VTC actuator losing oil “prime” in the cold weather. TSB was out a few years back.

    Thanks Dave, best Honda videos on yt. I have a 2011 Accord with 120k miles with this issue. The rattle noise became more noticeable a year ago and I have probably driven 15k miles since. Fresh oil helps. I read somewhere that turning the key three times before cranking may help with the noise. Idk why this works but I do it every cold start and it makes the rattle noise less worse or sometimes I don’t even hear anything

    turning the key on primes the fuel pump. the engine needs to be turning to pump oil thats why the rattle stops seconds after starting and oil is flowing through the vtc actuator.

    Just wanted to chime in for others here, I’ve had the rattle for a little over a year now and recently noticed some leaks developing on my rocker cover. Sounds electric strange in the front . No codes just low f,e. The rpms take a while to come down at highway speeds and then the rpms will bounce . Any idea ?? That's just pure luck. The valve cover gasket has nothing to do with the VTC actuator rattle. It has to do with the spring inside of it, that can be replaced. That's where to start - but you won't need to replace the entire actuator. Timing chain tensioner also needs to be replaced, as well as working over the locking pin in the actuator to clean it up and remove any burrs/high spots. That locking pin needs to move in and out of the detent freely.

    For our 2018 Honda Fit with the startup rattle from the VCT the simple fix was to change the oil to the blended version from Valvoline. I believe we used the non-blended / non-synth version on the previous change and that is when the rattle started. My bet is that the synth sticks better/longer on the pin and thus it pops into place without issue.

    I'm having this issue. My first thought was, "I'll change the VTC actuator!", but it's widely reported that this fix is only temporary and that it goes back to this state within a few months. So I don't want to spend on something that isn't a proper solution. Honda is aware of the issue, but has apparently stated that there's no permanent fix and that it (supposedly) won't hurt/damage the engine. But I'm scared of this affecting the tensioner and timing chain, leading to catastrophic engine failure (and there are some anecdotal reports of this on the web, though who knows, it could be a correlation vs causation thing). The one tip I've found is that moving your key to the second "on" position and holding for a few seconds before cranking helps. So on one hand, I want to do something about it ASAP to safeguard the engine; on the other, I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a solution that doesn't work when Honda claims doesn't actually harm the engine. Not sure what to do.

Have been changing oil regularly and checking level always (no leaks). Grinding noise getting longer then 2 days ago , car throws P300,302,303 and 339 codes, cel on and goes on limp mode. Read online it could be starter or crankshaft pos sensor so replaced starter yesterday but did not clear codes. Now Im waiting for crankshaft pos sensor to be delivered. Hopefully this will clear codes otherwise may have to replace vct actuator and timing chain.

    We are getting the lifter rattle on cold start on our 2011 Accord SE. I've found parking on a slight grade in the drive (front end higher) helps, possibly the oil sump pickup stays submerged or primed (my guess). Next, I'm going to try the 0w20 syn blend oil. I wished I had found the VCT as possible issue sooner, we had the timing chain replaced recently (240k miles) and they were right there...doah!

  • @caseyalexander2244

    It's not the lifters making the rattle. It's the locking pin inside the VTC (not VCT) actuator moving back and forth across its detent. This is usually because the spring that works against the pin gets weak and shortened.

    Getting the right mechanic makes all the difference in the world! Had a Check Engine light (P219A on a 2015 4cyl accord). This guy diagnosed a general code and got it right on the first try. It was the spark plugs, but scanner code doesn’t tell you that. I also did a few other things needed as well, which to my surprise took away the loud rattle at startup! Him nor I wasn’t really expecting that to go away!! He also got me his commercial discount at O’Reillys which saved me huge. Spark plugs NGK Iridium: Originally $24 each. Paid $11. Valve cover gasket: Originally $38. Paid $18. M1 Synthetic 5qt and M1 filter: Originally $64. Paid $40. So a little over $100 in parts which would of been $200, and $140 labor! I went to a shop before calling my mobile guy, and they wanted $550!!! For what? Also they we’re putting a generic synthetic blend! Wouldn’t even let me bring my own oil even if I paid full price! $550, I still can’t figure where that price came from. They charge $180/hr for labor. This is a 1hr job, took my guy 45 minutes and he didn’t have a lift for oil change. So if it’s $180 labor, how did the parts cost $370! Let’s say they charged $270 for labor (1.5hrs) That’s $280 in parts. What a rip off considering that If I paid full price at O’Reilly’s, it was only $200 for highest quality parts.

    I change the vtc actuator, my cars at about 3,500 miles was getting out of oil and making the noise I change and in cold start it doesn’t make it any more and doesn’t get out of oil but at about the same miles 3,500 it makes the noise and the oil light pops up so I’ll change this, thanks for the information. I also think I have a leak but will see in the next few days

Got 1/2 link off which threw up a P0341 code. Had to do the job over counting links between sprocket marks. First time I put the sprocket on the link instead of between two links. Honda technical advisor said leave it alone . I have and hope to get 250,000 miles on this engine . Remember regular oil/filter change and not by some econo-lube place.

    I brought my 2014 Honda CR-V to the dealership after 1 week off the lot and mechanic at the dealership said it’s because the light weight oil falls after time and does not sit up in the engine, so when first starting with cold start the sound occurs prior to oil re-circulating. They told me nothing to worry about, but based on this video, perhaps it is something to seek second opinion for and rectify?.

    I bought my 2012 CRV used in 2015. The first time I changed the oil, it growled on the next cold start and I had never heard it do that before. Did some research online and found out that this is a thing. The oil was new, so I couldn't blame the oil (0-20 syn). But the filter was a fram. I changed the oil again and went with a better oil filter. The growl creeps it's head up every now and again. At one point I spent $500 to have the VTC replaced. The growl eventually comes back. I manage it now by doing oil/filter changes at 50% on the maintenance minder. I feel like the oil filter is the most critical part, with respect to managing this issue. Especially if you have the growl immediately after doing an oil change. Having a filter with a better anti-drain back valve helps with keeping oil on top of the engine on cold starts. I feel like when the weather gets literally cold, that seal on the anti-drain back valve doesn't keep the oil on top of the engine. I also use synthetic blend oil now. Sometimes I think conventional would be better (especially with the 50% oil changes), but conventional oil is getting harder to find. Synthetic oil has that ability to 'creep' through gaps that conventional oil does not have. So I think synthetic oil is more likely to get by a bad anti-drain back valve on a filter on a cold night. I've tried filters made by mobil, purolator and bosch (and I've tried honda filters...I didn't see any advantage in using a honda filter). Mostly I have been buying them on Amazon and I feel like some percentage of stuff I buy on Amazon is either knock off or factory reject. None them stick out as being able to completely solve this problem. The results have been a little bit inconsistent (but better than a fram). My most recent oil change, I used a K&N bought at a local parts store. I'm curious to see how that plays out over the next 4000 miles.

    @@fredf.5901 this fall the noise became very frequent. Even started talking to shops about replacing vtc actuator and/or timing belt. Then for the first time I heard of the vtc/vvt oil solenoid. It isn't mentioned in the technical bulletin. I got my hands on a new one and took out the old one. The piston on the old one was already advanced with no power on it which isn't right. So I put in the new solenoid and also replaced the prescreen for the solenoid. Unfortunately I still get the noise but I feel it is not as frequent and is not as loud or as long as before. I wonder if the solenoid being bad damages the actuator. There is always another rabbit hole to go down.

  • @markwinter3503

    @markwinter3503

    @@fredf.5901 It's gotten more dynamic than that. The noise got real bad this fall. I thought about having the VTC replaced again but then I found out about the VTC/VVT oil solenoid. So I got one of them for about $60 and took the one on the engine out and my oil solenoid was already activated with no power on it which was opposite of the new one. So I installed the new one. I thought the crv idled smoother. The noise still occurred but not as often and I don't think it was as intense. Then I changed the oil solenoid prescreen. The old one wasn't blocked so I didn't think that would make much difference but after that, the frequency of the noise decreased again and had even more reduced intensity/duration. Not sure why or if it was my imagination. The technical bulletin on this issue doesn't even mention the oil solenoid and mine was obviously not working right. Maybe the faulty oil solenoid damages the VTC. If anybody gets the VTC changed, definitely change the oil solenoid. Or change the oil solenoid first. It's not too hard of a do-it-yourself thing if your hands are not too big. It really is a mystery to me that the oil solenoid isn't mentioned more.
