Honda ST1100 vs ST1300 Pan European

Just bought another Pan 11 after a ten year gap, i cant say ive ever come across a bike you can travel so far on in comfort at high speed, yet they are narrow enough across the panniers to filter which as said here are deep enough to hold a full sized lid. I did 30K a year on my last one and 600 mile a day unreal!

I've had both the 1100 and the 1300. The 1100 was a great bike. The only fault I have with the 1300 is the fueling, otherwise it seems to do everything a little better. Honda might have been trying too hard to justify the update to the 1300. The 1100 with more cc's and an electric windshield would have been just as nice.

Bought a pan 1100 a months ago, a 2002 so right at the end of the run. what a brilliant bike. really loving it and so is the misses. she finds that most of the time she doesnt need to hold at all. because of the topbox. Im also finding it super comfy and it pulls from tick over really smooth and most of the time you dont need to go over 4000 revs because of the low end torque. we have allready cover 2000 miles on it

I currently own two ST1100's, a 99 abs/tcs model and an 02 standard model which is featured on you tube, both are very well maintained with no issues, these bike do require in depth maintainance, for instance when the rear tyre is replaced you must also replace the three "O" rings on the drive shaft wheel assembly, the carbs are very easy to Balance, and the timing belt is easy to replace, the electrics can be an issue if not greased up, the cooling system is not the best and this shows on past Police bike models by that I mean the bikes do not like being left ticking over with the cooling fan cutting in and out, as eventually the heat will weaken the block casting and will eventually crack at the point of the casting mark where the 10mm coolant drain bolt is located on the right, I talk from experience on the matter, I have however added a manual switch in situ to overide the standard cooling system fan, with also the removal of the thermostats centre piece, this prevents running hot and gives extended engine life.. and yes there other issues which have been mentioned in other posts, but if you keep ontop of them they are not an issue, oil is changed every 4 thou religously with filter change every 8 thou using FS 5w40, also swing arms are protected with rubber matting hanging down in front of the rear wheel which are painted every so often so no corrosion problems there.. I use these bikes for Long distance dispatching and they do exactly what they say on the tin, believe me I've had a few bikes which have not seen a season working - this includes a couple of BMW's, the Honda ST's are by far the best for anthing you throw at them and will last as well.

Thanks for uploading! A few things: having owned many 1100's, and a few 1300's, I'd say the comfort on the 13 was better for me, with the adjustable seat (and electric screen). I suit the narrow seat better as I'm short, and found the 1100 much too tall and wide, and too firm. The older 1100's get expensive to maintain, with exhausts and swing arms (as you stated), plus having to clean out the brake pistons every 6 months was a pain. Handling on the 13 was never an issue for me, I'm not sure wh

I currently ride an unfaired 600 bandit (mk1 97v) i've owned this for five years and i love it, but it's time to get a big bike and use the Bandit as a commuter and i think it might be the Pan for distance traveling instead :)

I have had one for a couple of years (an 01), singularly the most uncomfortable bike I have had, I get pins and needles in both hands, got a slightly lower seat, got rid of the plastic casing around the handlebars and moved the handlebars forward a little, still the same buzz especially through my right hand. Having said that, the engine is beautiful, it has had all of the big things that needed to be done with it before I got the thing but it is nickle and diming me to death now, its old, the forks leak even after replacing the seals, it feels tired but so would I after 118,000 miles. I would still give it a 9 out of ten but the riding position kills me, need something far more upright next time round!

So I have some question for an expert like you, first is: what about wind protection? I heard the 13h is better, but i don't believe that, and this aspect for me is very important. Second, the high speed wobble at what speed comes up? (I don't cruise at 200 km/h!!!). 3rd, Considering to by buy also an Fjr 1300 could you give me some opinions (handling wind protection, seat, passenger) comparing to the Pan 1100. Thank you and greetings from Italy!!!

Pros & Cons for each - but if bleeding edge electronics arent 100% essential (Electronic suspension, etc) the ST1300 is hard to beat for wind protection and comfort, and the ST1100 is hard to beat for absolute value. I picked up my ST1100 for less than $3000. Really an amazing bike for the money. You can also sell it for pretty much the same price... Cheers! Good luck with your bike purchase!

I have had an ST1100 and rode it around Europe for a month, only issue was that the Alternator went. The ST1300 was i thought was a better bike at low speed control and the wobble you mentioned (removal of the panniers and low screen didn't remove it on my bike >70mph) was in the end down to the fork oil viscosity and i got that info from a Honda mech at a bike show while i still had mine, changed it and it worked. I think they need to produce the ST1100 again - plenty of people would buy em!

The only thing that lets it down (rant alert) is the price for spare parts and what seems to be quality issues with every model that BMW wont honor or repair, if it was on their cars they jump on it! My 07RT Hexhead has issues with fuel tank/hub carrier failure causing deaths/final drives leaking and catching fire/driveshaft lube not on regular maint or greasing point (So, far cost me £1200 in parts to fix it) and the ABS pumps fail (£200 fix) and various other issues. The bikes do need to be set up correctly, then ridden in an appropriate manner. Tank slappers can be ridden through dropping your centre of gravity

Agree with a lot of the things you've said. I've had my ST11 for several years now but haven't ridden it due to seized alternator and due to work it being sat in my storage unit for two years, (rebuilding at present). Recently got an ST13 (done 3K on it) and have to say I'm not impressed. I love the build quality of it, the power and handling in the dry. But in the wet it gives no confidence at all but I'd say that's down to the Pilot Pro 4 tyres which seem to loose pressure quite quickly? Mine weaves over ninety with the huge Honda top box on it or with some weight in the panniers it's scary, the 11 doesn't do that. Deceleration is stepped where the 11 is smooth. As you've said, feels like I'm sat on top of the bike where the 11 you feel part of it. The seat is lovely but then the previous owner had it recovered and a gel insert fitted. Got to be the most comfortable seat I've ever ridden on, rode 408 miles home when I bought it without getting off it. Despite these niggles for me I like the 13, I'm sure I can improve it with some different tyres and suspension set-up? I nearly sold my 11 when I first got it because the steering was lethal, the BT021 on the front had gone a triangular shape profile (too soft on the edges). My tyre dealer who supplies a lot of the local st11 blood bike riders suggested the BT023 so I went with that, what a difference, brilliant tyre on an 11. They spent years getting the 11 right, get the impression they didn't spend long on the 13? Love the video's keep them coming.

A Honda, ST 1300 with fresh Dunlops, aftermarket, vented windshield, Sergeant seat, and many many little goodies on it was for sale by the original owner. I only have 28,000 miles on it never dropped, not modified or tampered with Computer, wise, or exhaust system, wise or airbox wise.. it was an 85° day, and, although I really like to think of myself as a good negotiator, I wanted this machine so much because of the pictures and the reputation they have for durability, high, mileage, and comfort. I was already sold. So I took 100% of the asking price cash. so I showed up and got the grand tour description by the original owner. Factory service, manual, extra oil and filters, color, matchedtrunk, heated grips, I was sold. I couldn’t wait to ride it. So I told the guy, I need to take it for a test ride. He said fine. I told him I would be gone at least an hour, maybe two. He lifted the edge/border between a small town and farm country. Hundreds of back road miles around Johnstown Pennsylvania... yes, that Johnstown, the flood Johnstown, that area is beautiful, and lots of mountain roads so I headed out with all my gear on, Kevlar, jeans, Streetbike, boots, deerskin, gloves, leather jacket, full face helmet, like I always wear. I wanted to see what it felt like it with all my normal gear on. Big smile on my face. Wonderful motor, shifted as good as any suzuki… about 10 miles out, I started feeling heat on my shins. At first, I didn’t give it a second thought, but as the heat intensified, I actually pulled over because I thought I was getting sprayed with hot water or an oil leak. But it was heat coming off of the engine and the radiator onto my legs and my crotch… I can put up with little nagging things, but heat is one of the things I will not put up with. I turned around and headed back. I got back to the sellers house and he was in the garage and came out smiling and said wow, that was a quick two hours. The first words out of my mouth were “how can you ride this oven? “ is friendly smile melted away into a face of disappointment. He knew it was a dealbreaker. And the first thing he said was “that’s why it’s for sale “ I have tried the early FJR , The Kawasaki 1400 Concourse, and now the Honda ST 1300. I tried all the three big Japanese sport touring machines. And all three of them were rolling ovens. I ended up buying a Moto Guzzi Norge.. A red one with color matched bags. The cylinders are right there in front of your shins, but that being my fourth moto guzzi since 1979., I knew from experience that they do not put out excessive BTUs.. The Norge I think had somewhere around 90 hp. I know high horsepower motorcycles put out a lot more heat. The Norge was fine. I wrote that thing for 12 years just like my previous three Guzzis, Nothing broke, never left me, stranded, and it took me a long time to sell it, as usual.. most people have never even seen a guzzi.. The whole time I always wished that that ST 1300 didn’t put out so much heat. The only bike I ever owned. It was hotter was a mid1980s Honda 700 saber with the color matched factory option CBX style faring and matching color bags. That was the ball time ball roster of all the machines I have owned over the decades. I could feel the heat coming through my aero stitch suit on 50 degree days.. I only kept that machine for about a month because of the heat issue.. I know Honda North had to deflect the heat away from the rider because I’ve had a GL 1800 Goldwing that you could not feel any heat from that engine, and I commuted on a Honda pacific coast for 24 years, same thing, no heat whatsoever coming off of that engine or radiator onto the rider.. a pity.. I really wanted an ST 1300.. PS I just picked up a 2010 Honda NT 700 V from the original owner with only 7500 miles on it here in 2023. Again, it looks like an ST, but I am not getting any heat from the radiator. I’m glad I waited.

Bad fueling is something that seems to persist on quite a number of bikes unfortunately. I think many people pay it no mind since it's their toy and they just want to go fast, but this just will not do as a daily rider. How do find maintenance and living with the ST1100 nowadays? I'm not concerned abut being fast as I am about effortless power (just as well since I don't fit on supersports at 6'6"). Having some wind protection and shaft drive would be great, since Perth winters are quite woolly and wet.

+RoadcraftNottingham I don't notice the weight with mine once I'm past about 10 MPH (16 K/h) and most of my riding is two up and add the weight of loaded side cases and top box and sometimes my trailer as well. Coming to a stop in suburban traffic ( a few times a year) gets a little unstable and most times it's both feet down as the bike comes to a stop - benefit of combined brakes on the A model

@TimClynes .....I agree with you. The 1100 was quite soft too but I suppose they aren't sports bikes. I loved the 1300 handling generally and I really could throw that around. I wondered if the weave was caused by the top box and possible vortex wake caused by the sharper fairing making the wind "slap" the box. Keeping the throttle slightly open and dragging the rear brake took it away but it wasn't nice.

I couldn't agree more, but would Honda be able to get it past emission laws via carbs? After all, despite being several years into fuel injection, they still aren't as smooth on fuelling and general delivery, especially around town and under 60mph.

I have owned 3 ST1300's (including my current one), and have never experienced any weave, even two up with full luggage. However, I have never ridden the bike over 100mph even in Germany, and I have heard that this can be an issue at around 110mph. Never been on the 1100 though so was nice to see the comparison

I've had an ST11 standing for months in the UK without a hitch and owned 4 pan 11s without any carb probs (apart from worn needle guides in a 140,000 mile model). As you say, it may be the fuel difference. I just wish they still made new pan 1100s, I would buy one tomorrow.

at what kind of speeds where the wobbles developing on the st1300 ?

  • @wazzazv614
    @wazzazv6147 жыл бұрын

I have owned both bikes and I prefer the St1300 it just handles a lot better, no wobbling around broad bends. I took my ST1100 from Hobart to Victoria and followed the coast to Adelaide then road up the centre to Ayers rock up to Tennant Creek over to Mt ISA and back through Emerald back down to Brisbane to Sydney to Melbourne and home. These bikes are reliable and I have no doubt I could have got straight back on and gone to Broome without a problem. They do not like dirt roads and I warn people not to play with fire. The St1300 does not "wobble" what is happening is that in certain wind conditions and atmospheric pressures there is build up of forces on the front screen and its more wind buffeting. It does occasionally happen but not until you are exceeding 130 kpm. I understand it I am not sure how to rectify it, maybe just on the day pull back on the speed. At these speeds air pressure comes into play. The St1300 stock standard has a more comfortable seat. I choose the St1300 there isn't much difference in speed but the St 1300 handles a lot better, The fuel injector system is very jerky I haven't found a way around this problem yet. Yours ; A good assessment!. If you have an ST1100 and your happy with it , keep it! for the extra money on a St1300 I wouldn't bother.

I went to see a guy selling an ST1100. I was upgrading from a CB500, so this would have been far bigger and heavier than what I'd ridden before. Not used to the weight, I ended up dropping it and smashing the wing mirror and screen. I paid the guy for the damage but was scared of the weight of the bike so I didn't buy it. I'm not tall - about 5'6 or 5'7 - and it was a struggle sitting on the bike and reaching the ground. I'm still in love with these bikes and I kind of regret being scared away so easily. What do you think? Are these bikes prohibitively large and heavy for shorter people, or should I have bought it and taught myself to handle it afterwards?

I'm only 5'8 but slightly longer legs and my instructor at 5'6 is fine with it. It's most important to have correct braking techniques and allow for the extra weight. Consider the Deauville. They're lighter and really nice.

+Conway79 It maybe a heavy bike but you don't notice it above 10 - 15 k?H (6 - 10 MPH). I've had my 99 1100A 10 years next month after having a CX500. I bought mine off a 45 year old lady who owned it five years and it took her that long to realise she was to small for it. The A or ABS model is another 10kg heavier due to all the ABS gear and so far never needed as with the traction control. From 1996 they added Combine brakes to the A model so regardless hand or foot braking you have braking on both wheels though the braking force will be different if you use either foot or hand or both together.

I suspect Honda's demographics for the 13 targetted a less mature rider hence the lighter steering for better sales. The heavier steering of the 11 favors the more mature/older riders which means less sales. One more thing, the 11 is prone to vapor lock in hot ambients (Mojave) but thats another story. BTW absolutely wonderful video, thank you! I also use a Vio POV on my videos.

On linked braking the rear usually operates one side of the front, best check your manual. Regarding too hot into a bend, there are too many factors to consider..the speed you're going, road surface, road condition, wet or dry, camber, severity of the bend, type of tyres you use,(these are just off the top of my head) If I've gone too hot into a bend I try to sit up, brake on front and drop it down again whilst looking where I want to go (target fixation) Your bike will lean more than you think

  • @RoadcraftNottingham
    @RoadcraftNottingham12 жыл бұрын

@r3tyr3d It depends if older = wiser or if it = losing strength as the pan 11 is a VERY heavy bike and as easy as it is to ride at all speeds, you need to be fully aware of where you stop. i.e road camber, potholes inclines etc. If the bike goes beyond 15 degrees or so lean whilst stationary you'll drop it however strong you are. I love my Pan but am always aware at 5 feet 8 that I'm stuffed if I don't watch it. I hope this helps.

When able to do legal high speed runs two or one up, with/without top box, fully laden or unladed, never had a `high speed wobble` moment folks keep mentioning about. Having changed to using a Bagster seat early on in ownership, I cant comment on comfort over original config. Having height adjustments to work with, I find my set up very comfortable indeed. As for heat issues, rode the hot summers in Italy and didn't have any issues either. May be I've got asbestos legs. Were I to change bikes, it would be to a BMW with a dream to own the 1600. However, I'd probably have to have a windfall to make it happen. I could downsize... now there's a thought

I bought a 2001 ST1100A this year in showroom condition with 4700 miles! It's a beautiful machine, makes the miles fly by. My bum was very sore on my VFR after 45 minutes. On the ST1100 I can ride for 2 hours without a break. Pillon seat is very good. My only complaint about the ST1100 is that the std windscreen tosses a lot of air at your helmet at speed. So, I always wear earplugs. For a tall guy like myself, the ST1100 has much more legroom than the FJR1300. The ST is a pig in the driveway.

Correction, on the 1100A from 1996 the foot brake operates outer two pistons of the rear caliper and the centre of each front caliper. The hand brake uses outer two on front calipers and centre of the rear. Most of the braking force on hand brake is on the front wheel and the foot brake is about even all around. You can notice the difference by trying each on it's own. As usual maximum braking happens using both systems. I've never had any issues over the six years I've had my 1100A

Agree fueling on the 11 seems better but the carbs are prone to problems due to extremely tiny orifices on the mid range jets. When storing the bike unused for more than a week, the gas just sits in the bowls and degrades (California fuel) and causes rough running on next run that may not improve. Bowls are very difficult to drain and its a wicked chore to get the carbs off. Fuel degradation doesnt seem to happen on the 13 and overall I think servicing the Fuel injection on the 13 is easier.

Owned an ST1300 from new back in 2006, heavy lump of a bike, fit & finish was great as with all Honda bikes, too wide to filter safely, so may as well have been in a car ... Bike was a death trap, weaved about from what seemed to me like the back end, felt like a sudden tyre deflation, only seemed an issue loaded up with a pillion with screen on highest setting at 80mph plus ... jogged it on via a trade in against a GL1800 in 2008, now that was a proper bike ... had 4 bikes since CBR600F / VFR800Fi / FZS1000, still always fancied an ST1100, may be I'll start looking over the winter mths as used bike prices drop some what... newest you'll find now will be 20yrs old, hopefully I'll find a well loved bike at a decent price.

The ST1300 fuelling at low speed can be sorted by fitting a Fuel Cut Eliminator. This makes it feel as smooth as the 1100. I agree that a top box and one-up makes the bike start to wobble at speed. The 1300 becomes a much better bike when two-up as it steadies the handling and has distinctly more 'oomph' than the 1100. Handle bar rises are a must for comfort, control and visibility through the rear view mirrors. Not sure why Honda got this so wrong. Custom flatter seat is desirable too.

ive made some dispatcher mods to my 1100 , theres a yss shock so even though its a cheapish shock theres ride height adjustment , so dropped that 10mm , and pulled the forks up through the yokes the same , i also ditched the mirrors (i dont care what my bikes look like lol) shaved 14 inches !!!!!!!! off the bike for filtering , just fitted normal mirrors and put indicators on the inside of the screen (i know ugleeee heheh) also a good upgrade is a front brake master cyl from a blade or firestorm (up from half inch to 5/8 internal bore ) improves bite , and i recommend handlebar risers (you will have to ditch the handlebar shroud ) no need to replace and cables wirng or brake lines , just lose the clamp holding the brakeline to the fork leg , i know these mods are not for everyone , as it really doesent look that good , but my improvements are for my needs , and they have really improved the bike for me , anyways resale value isint an issue for me, when im finished with it , well , itll be well used !!! great bikes , you can tell its built to do a job , and not so much built by the accounting team , mines 1990 , its all them years old , and still does a great job against more modern bikes ,, amazing this bike was developet in the 80's , only things i would change would be the front calipers , and while the weight is hidden well , if it was 50kg lighter , that would be amazing , all the best , dave

It apparently was to do with the viscosity of the fork oil - if you changed it for the type used on the Honda Sportsbikes it solved the problem. Sadly, it got the reputation as the widow maker after 3 Police Officers were killed riding them.Thats why Honda discontinued the ST to remove the shame for what has been a very good tourer.

@@RoadcraftNottingham From what I understand, the wobbles are pretty much just caused by having the windscreen up and a load on the back. I reckon what happened is when they designed the aerodynamics and whatnot they only really tested with max loads in the panniers and nothing on a rack/sissy bar (and most likely with the windscreen down). For my own experience, the bike pulls well up to 140mph as Stuart said and has no issues with the windscreen down and no/light load (just some junk in the bags). I recently went motocamping though and it was unstable as hell with my equipment on it at 70+mph. I originally thought I was losing traction with the rear tire, it was odd. As if the wobble was a rear wheel wobble and not a front wheel wobble like you see with tank slappers. It didn't feel particularly dangerous, just... loose haha Anyway, just my experience thus far for a 2 year old comment on a 10 year old video lol.

I think the 13 handles better/quicker but weave/wobble is a consequence of the lighter steering. I like the heavy lazy steering feel on the 11, me thinks thats what makes it more stable at high speeds. I notice I feel better on the 11 if I excercise and build up my wrist and arm muscles before riding it. Then the heavy steering becomes insignificant.
