    I have three words for you: FOUR FIFTY EIGHT!!! That friggin' bolt caused me more pain today than I care to discuss! For anyone else who couldn't get it off like me, get the first one off, drill through the second one (the one that got stuck) and you should be able to gently twist the part off. I was able to find a replacement bolt at Lowe's and I'm just crossing fingers it holds. Hardly Moving, you literally saved me $2000 today. You need to put your venmo on here so I can send you a check. Seriously! It won't be 2k, but it should be good for a LOT of beer and maybe a few tools! Oh, and I hope you don't mind, but if anyone is looking to buy a once-used gauge cluster and vacuum pump, I'd gladly sell you one!

  • @hardlymovingpro

    The new compressor should have come with the appropriate amount of PAG 46 pre-filled. If not, the instructions with the new compressor should indicated the proper amount. If replacing the condenser, you must add around 2 oz of PAG for the oil loss from the old condenser and integrated accumulator. Hope this helps you out.

    Thank you. Just got the parts, doing the job this weekend. Edit: thanks to your instructions this was a straightforward and non eventful success! I got a little excited and ahead of myself at one point and forgot to purge the yellow hose of air after attaching the refrigerant. Caught it immediately, and just pulled another vacuum, then resumed the steps in sequence. No leaks and I am experiencing 20-25 degree colder air than ambient, so I am happy. One weird thing: the rear unit that cools the back seat is consistently 5-10 degrees cooler than the front vents. Anything to worry about?

    Yes... you are correct. The new compressor came pre-oiled with new PAG oil. If replacing the condenser with the compressor, add around 1.5 to 2 oz of additional oil to the system ... via AC line to the condenser or to the accumulator. The oil will eventually circulate through the entire system.

    Why did you not pull a vacuum from the high side? And why are you not using your manifold to inject your coolant?

  • @hardlymovingpro

    @hardlymovingpro

    5 жыл бұрын

    Pulling from both the high and low side is optional and not necessary. You can pull decent vacuum from the low side. Also with old cars, if you crack open the high side schrader valve with the service valve adapter, you run the risk of having to replace the valve. The o ring, at least half the time, may have hardened and may not provide a good seal. You don't inject coolant into the A/C system much less through the manifold. For the shade tree DIY guys with basic A/C tools, I'm showing them how they can introduce new refrigerant with off-the-shelf products they can purchase through their local auto parts retailers. If you rent a manifold with hoses, the kits do not contain a freon can adapter and an additional hose to connect to the manifold's secondary center port connector.

    If your compressor goes out. Do you have to replace condenser? Is there a test to see if it's good?

  • @hardlymovingpro

    @hardlymovingpro

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes and No. If it was a internal failure, then there's a good possibility that debris worked its way to the condenser to clog it up. If the clutch component went out and there's been no leaks, you could get by with just replacing the compressor. The only problem is that most of these compressor makers will not honor a warranty claim unless you can provide proof that you replaced the condenser, accumulator and the expansion valve (like a sales receipt). The replacement of the expansion valve, IMHO, is a little over the top. The only way to test the condenser is to charge up the system with the new compressor and monitor the high pressure side gauge. If the reading is low (like 150 psi or less), than its fair to say the condenser is restricting gas flow.

Do I have to purchase a recovery machine? The vehicle is not drivable as the problem is the compressor belt connector is rusted off and might literally fly off the next time I start it. I was planning on keeping the Pilot where it is until after I make the change.

    Was wondering if the evaporator expansion valve needed to addressed, and why did you not need to flush the system... Really great video, thanks for making it!

  • @hardlymovingpro

    @hardlymovingpro

    4 жыл бұрын

    A flush is generally prudent if the compressor failed. If the failure was internal, metal particles will shoot downstream in the high pressure line to the condenser ... which is why I always replace the condenser with the compressor. The debris will not pass beyond the condenser since the condenser tubes are so narrow, the debris will usually cause a clog. A leak in the system, however, will no result in debris forming inside the a/c system. A flush would be a good idea for the high pressure hose/line between the compressor and condenser for a compressor replacement. Flushing a condenser usually does not work. The condenser tubes are too small to dislodge any debris. The a/c compressor providers want you to replace the expansion valve or else they will void the warranty. A receipt showing you purchased the expansion valve will suffice. Never encountered a failed expansion valve...orifice tubes are another story.

    There should be a label inside the engine compartment indicating the amount of refrigerant the system should hold. Believe it equates to 24 - 27 oz. I'm now both evacuating and recharging the ac systems via 4 hoses connected to the ac manifold (blue to low side quick connect, red to high side quick connect, yellow with a shut off valve to the vacuum pump, and another yellow with a can connector with a shut off valve). I need to see the pressure on the high side to determine if the system is under or over pressurized. After doing this enough times, monitoring pressure just through the low side gauge isn't good enough. After evacuation, I close off the high side valve on the manifold so I can monitor how the pressure is building up while the refrigerant is getting pulled in. The high side should be at a minimum of 170 psi. If it shoots pass 250 psi and the low side stays below around 45 psi, it's overcharged. If the low side stays below 40 psi while the high side keeps climbing, then there's something impeding high pressure flow (clogged condenser, accumulator, lines or expansion valve). Recently went through hell and back trying to figure out why the high side on a Crown Vic was so high. Turned out that the new orifice tube was defective (after having had the condenser and accumulator replaced).

    It's a manifold or compressor manifold. You need a 5.5 mm socket to get it off. The edges of the bolt could slip and round off if you attached the 5.5 mm socket to a 1/4" socket wrench ... Which is why i attach the socket to a 3/8" impact tool via 3/8 to 1/4 adapter. The twisting and impact force will usually break the bolt loose.

    From my past experience, if there were shavings as a result of compressor internal failure, they would migrate to the condenser and stop at or before the accumulator. There were not shavings present. There was no PAG oil in the old compressor ... so the oil in the new compressor should compensate for oil loss from the replacement of the condenser and accumulator. To date, no complaints from the customer with his new compressor and condenser.

    If you find any metal shavings in the PAG oil after removing the parts (perhaps from a seized compressor) , you can flush the hoses with a/c solvent and compressed air. Metal particles usually get trapped in the condenser tubes and accumulator and do no work their way to the expansion valve.

    I get the impression you're a residential/commercial a/c guy who works on big systems. With cars, the system is considerably smaller and its not necessary to "pull" from the high side. Besides, it's a closed circular system. Pull from the low side, it will pull vacuum from the high side. Also with some auto systems, based on the location of the accumulator, pulling on the high side can pull compressor oil. I've never seen any auto repair shop use nitrogen gas except for filling tires. Thanks for your post.

    I worked for Chrysler for 10 years as a master tech, and now I do comercial refrigeration. And we have used dry nitrogen in cars for leak checks for as long as I can remember. Specially on brand new cars under manufacture warranty they don’t want you to put dye. Vehicles we use inches of mercury when we pull a vacuum. Refrigeration microns it’s a much deeper vacuum reading.

    Long, vague, nonsensical explanation from the father-in-law who asked me to do the repair. The shop owner is a friend of the daughter's father and the father didn't want to upset the owner? The shop is a hole-in-the-wall and their mechanics aren't that good? They got a good price on the repair? All I can say is that they slapped in a new compressor damaging the alternator's electrically connector in the process (which I also had to replace), no new condenser was installed and I don't know if an evacuation was performed and/or additional compressor oil was added to the system which may have caused the compressor to fail.

    Wow! It seems the shop owner didn't care about allowing shoddy work be done to his friends' vehicle. But on the other hand, I had a similar incident with a water pump repair where all bolt heads weren't tightened to the pump housing on my SUV one time. The shop owner was very appreciative, so he could make it right and keep our business. He said he had already fired the guy who did the work on our car.

    What you can do is find out if the Pilot replacement parts (compressor and condenser) is compatible to fit on to the MDX. What I can tell you is that the '05 - '08 Pilot compressor works on the '03 - '06 MDX. Same for the condenser up to '08. The Pilot in the video had the new V6. You'll have to look inside the engine compartment and look for differences which I think there won't be much. Did a compressor and condenser replacement on a '01 Pilot and it was easier and pretty much the same.

  • @hardlymovingpro

    @hardlymovingpro

    5 жыл бұрын

    Good question. Condenser do not cause a compressor to fail. It's the other way around. (outside of a condenser leak usually caused by a rock hitting it on the highway). If the internals of the compressor has failed, fragments of the internals will get pushed downstream into the condenser tubes. This will impede or block the flow of refrigerant to your expansion valve. If the flow is not high enough to the valve, you will experience mediocre cooling. In addition, the blockage may stress out your new compressor which could result in failure in short order. You could attempt to blow clean the condenser with compressed air and solvent, but the tubes are usually too small to blow out all the impediments.
