Honda e:Ny1 - Honda's most important new car...but is it any good?

For a company so used to giving us technical innovation and solutions, Honda have been slow to truly enter the mainstream EV world. Yes, they gave us the wonderful little Honda e, but that is an expensive, and very niche product. If they are really serious about electrification, they need to compete in one of the biggest sectors of them all, the compact SUV/crossover market. So here it is, the new Honda e:Ny1. But given how many of its rivals are already here, some with updated, even newer models of their original offerings, have Honda left it too late? To find out, Bryan subjects the car to the road test review that actual car buyers trust when it comes to choosing their next electric car - the AutoEV one.
AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

Just ordered mine, so many bad reviews of this car, I almost didnt bother trying it! So glad I did, yes its not super exciting, but that interior, the build quality, equipment level and its not trying to look like a star ship lol Did the test drive, gave them my money. I have a lot of time for your reviews and this one has been so honest and correct compared to some who really hosed down this Honda. Thank You!!!

You are the only person that I have seen who knows about the resonator wheels. I am very keen to hear, or rather not hear this. For those that might not know Honda have fitted light weight Helmholtz resonators inside each wheel. This attenuates noise around 220hz by 10db. On our coarse UK roads this should be a real advantage. Thanks for your review, good fun.

I have the feeling that the E:NY1 is more the electric Jazz than one of the larger petrol Honda cars!! It’s a well designed and well built car, just like my old Honda Jazz was. Yes!! I had a Honda Jazz before my 2020 Renault Zoe!! It was a great car until the engine management Unit went home!!

All the EV's are just getting to be stupid prices ( especially from the legacy makers). We know that development costs are quite high and they say about battery costs while conveniently forgetting the cost savings of not having to put in an engine or gearbox which has to be a circa £7,500 saving over an ICE car.

I suppose it still has a motor and electronics and a basic gearbox, but I do agree with you they are taking the mic especially with this car. It should be £35k, I'm sure the price will drop a bit though, Especially second hand.

This was a well balanced review. I agree with you that Honda (as has other makes) seem to have lost their design flair of old. They definitely need to look back to their old designs like the CRV and bring back the Honda magic. Would have liked to see what was inside the bonnet of this E:NY1.

The issue is that Honda are remembered with rose tinted glasses. People remember the exciting and daring ones but forget that they have always provided cars for the masses too that are more functional. What Honda provide generally speaking are robust reliable cars that have good road manners and are nice to drive and own. Yes, the Honda E is wonderfully cute but saddled with hopeless range that means most wont entertain it. But Honda again have always done this, look at the CRZ, the CRX the Legend and various others. All are universally loved but all flawed through price, design or practicality. This will be another Honda that you can admire and enjoy owning but not one you will remember. Hopefully something else built on this platform will deliver more in the way of excitement and flair. What does concern me is that Honda also used to place value for money high on their list whilst still giving a very high quality product. Now it seems they want to charge a premium for everything regardless of whether it merits it and that is costing them market share I fear they will never claw back.

Price is the real problem for all cars in this segment. I've had an e-Niro since 2019 and new ones are still typically €10,000 more than ICE equivalents (I live in France). The real problem for this Honda, the Niro EV and others is the starting price of the Tesla Model Y. I mean come on!!...The base Model Y is a much bigger and more capable car with performance and charging speeds that are way ahead of these cars. Someone needs to break ranks on this size of car and get into the mid £30K....other than that Tesla and the Chinese will carve out big chunks of the market.

Had one today as a courtesy car when my FK8 Civic Type R was in for its 5th year service & Mot. I felt the handling on twisty roads was cumbersome & it crashed over sharp bumps & depressions. Otherwise it drove OK in town & main roads. Very expensive for what it is as are most EV's. In driving 16 miles to home the "range" only dropped by 3 miles but on starting return journey the range then immediately dropped by 17 miles so this could be misleading when on a journey. The same thing happened on the return journey in that when driving at 70mph the range suddenly stopped reducing.

There are far nicer cheaper cars out there, Niro EV, new Kona, Smart #1, Megane E-Tech, ID 4, EV6, Ioniq 5 I mean what we're they thinking? What's reviewed here I would've imagined would be 35k-37k no more than that. When the price was mentioned I was like.... what? Are they being serious?
