People who are strangers to starting these beasts maybe unfamiliar with the slow turn over kicks done prior to starting. The answer is really quite simple, the rider is mentally checking over they have in order their family affairs, their will is up to date, the local emergency centre is ready on speed dial, and that they’ve remembered to wear their reinforced underpants!

Never. Never sell it. You'll never be able to replace it if and WHEN you end up regretting it. Been down the sellers remorse road too many times now with banshees, tecate 4's,etc. It's the worst. I have 2 kx500's now,one was $800 and one was $1200 back when you could get em. The $800 kid DEFINITELY didn't know what he had. I wouldn't even try to haggle w/him and he was SHOCKED i paid him full asking price for it lol!!😂 I'll keep these two bikes for a lifetime, why not! They're both bone stock and very nice,1990 and 1993. Once these old five hundo's fall into guys like Ken Kaplan's hands they turn into $10,000 bikes! Couldn't ever imagine paying that i mean i love that guy ta death but gaddamn!!😱😱

I remember those days. My cousin had a 1987 CR250R that we used to always ride when I’d visit family in Florida. Thinking of that sound & the smell of Klotz oil is nostalgic. I had a 1989 & 1991 RM125 in middle & highschool as well as a 96. CR250R. I miss those Saturdays as a kid being so excited to ride rain or shine. Since then I’ve had a 790R & variety of 250/350/450’s but the feeling isn’t the same. I’ve been thinking a lot about getting another 2stroke for a variety of reasons. 🤔

Had a 97 for 22 years, easy to cold start. turon on petcock, tip bike over until you see fuel run out, give a couple of soft kicks to make sure she's primed, find top dead center, pull the choke and one good kick with the slightest of a crack to the throttle after immediately after the kick. First time every time. Used to laugh at my buddies when hp 4 strokes first came out and they would spend 15 minutes cold and hot starting them, while my beloved 500 never failed me. I died a little that day I saw her leave in another man's truck.

Had a 89 CR 125 bk in late 90s best bike IV had . I was 16 love it happy days 💯👍
Lovely sound. You never feel more alive than when your close to death. You get that feeling when mounting one of they badboy's when their started.

Amen to that I had a 2000 CR500R had many close calls. Had to eventually sell it as I lived in town and cops did not appreciate me riding on the street
As a boy I watched my uncle kick over a cold 87 YZ490 while wearing flip flops. He got the bike started pretty quickly despite it hadn’t been started in years. These types of men just simply don’t exist anymore. I too wouldnt dare try to start my cr500af in anything other than motocross boots and it’s always a chore.
Love this bike 😍
That bike still looks good!
That is beatiful and its my favorite year.
What a awesome bike i wish I had one
Beautiful bike!
these were the new breed with monoshock I remember these as a kid. 🤩
My fav year for the big CR500 , used to kit it over quicker than that a few years back , didnt we mate haha fairplay !!
Legendary 2 stroke marvel of a honda

That definitely look's like me trying to start mine in 85.lol sprained my ankle twice !!! It was and still is to powerful for me on the track.
Very strong!
Nice bike 👍
Nice sound
thanks for uploading man, she sounds great. Also nice hearing all the backtalking she did to ya at first, hahaha
Most beautiful motorcycle ever made.
What a soundtrack 👌

My son had a kx500 we had to tow with my kmx and hoses pipe,to bump start bike, but what an animal, wheelies everygear with a little tug
Un mostro 😀
What a lovely bike.Thats all i can say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is one classic beautiful bike. Love it
It's pretty good
That thing is crissspyy
Honda CR500 1987🔥⚡☄
Spettacolare
Nice bike! Meanest sounding machine from the factory ever. Take the time to find top dead center on every kick. It will never start any other way. I have an 86CR500.
The best dirt bike honda ever made
I had a 89 trick w mine was lean over to the right for a sec then kick it worked every time never had to kick it more then couple times.
Very nice
Richard I have the same exact bike mine just has the Pro Circuit pipe. i would never try to start mine on a bike stand since these bikes were very high to begin with. make sure you drain the carb if not going to use for a while especially if you live in cold weather.

Always drain carb and it hadn't been started for 9 months. Used an auxiliary fuel bottle as tank was fully drained then nothing settles
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Nice real Nice 👍.
You have to go all in from the top when cold starting a CR 500. It is no picnic. He was lucky to start on such a halfass kick.
1:58 is the best part 😀
Nothing sounds better than a 2 stroke
My 06 is stubborn, too, at times... This ratcheting manual kick-start was a german invention - (sachs)... very much out dated - but the execs told us electric start would add too many l b's, meanwhile they engineered a frame so heavy as to support a US Naval minesweeper... bring back our 80's designs, please
Fcking awsome
i got to laugh, i'm 60 and still ride a KTM 525exc. while watching this my missus walked past and muttered " i'd rather you play with yourself than ride those bloody things"
Man do i miss mine it was stolen right after i had all the port work done
Music to ma ears. Wheeeueey
Вот это да)
Never gas up when cold
Of course that stand won't be there in the middle of the desert on a 90 degree day. Been there and done that...many times.

I wish I could smell this video.
I often had ti push my 1986 CR500 over the nearest Hill to male It start...
How delicate he was being I half expected it to fire in like 2 good kicks... by the time it started he wasn’t so delicate... LOL
Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
😎
I let someone ride my 87 CR 250 . He putted around till he stalled it . He loaded it up with gas I think . I got on ( I had motocross boots on ) I kicked it , it kicked back & ripped a hole through the sole of my boot and the bottom of my foot . That was 30+ years ago and the scar is still there .
I’m surprised you got it started without a full kick
The bike just farted at 1:21 . How cool 😄
Lean over, tdc, and kick
Que cañasooo
Stock carburetor?
D'accord ... 46 coups de kick avant de démarrer ... et ça ne démarre toujours pas . David Thorpe doit bien rigoler .
Apparently a new crossfit routine. Cardio is finished before the bike kicks off.
The backfires were just warning questions . Bang - you sure you wanna do this Bang Bang - last chance to back out Bang Bang Bang - good job, you're not a pussy Vroom..now you're dead, but you've died a champion

MACHINE!!
Is this gonna take long????
That started OK.. some times it can take a day..
These bikes are insane..not a toy for a beginner
Why don’t they still make these I ride a yz125 I wish I could ride a cr500 newer one
When I had my CR500 I would lay the bike down on it's side to let the gas flow out of the carburetor. Choke kick vroom broom broom.
I mean im no expert here but wouldnt it be easier to go 1 click past TDC bring it all the way up to the top and then kick it? My big bore 4 stroke and 2 stroke start easily when doing this
Gawd I miss two strokes!
I rode a beast like this one time before. Notice I said "one time" That was a scary sumbitch
Drool.
Out of curiosity what ratio are you running for fuel?

32:1. Hadn’t been started for 2 years and needed a plug. Actually started it last week which was first time since this video. Gave it a proper ride out which I’ve not ridden it before . Have to say so much smother than my 87 KX500.
That's the right way to have your engine cases broken with all those kicks....

Uh it's not sitting on the crankcase my dude
Video starts at 1:55
Do it right, and it will start much easier. And kick like you Mean it.
Man I seem a guy break his foot trying to start a 500
Tdc brother
All the way up, past TDC, then rip it
why is it on blankets was it sleeping?
