After owning the EX version of this generation of civic for 2 years i cant praise it enough. Plenty of torque even at idle, and loads of it above 2000 rpm. Great fuel econemy, comfort, cabin space, random features including the magic seats, heated mirrors and an overall solid feel on the road. This thing sticks into bends and powers out of them. On the motorway it feels smooth, very little noise even at the limit but at the same time reminds you that you're the one driving. From a point of view of fixing it, its not too bad to work on other than the diesel filter which i personally hate with a passion. Has to be done soon so thatll be fun. Doesnt drink a drop of oil, and seems to run on bare diesel fumes because that guage hardly moves. I get around 1000 km out of a tank. Dpf regens are a little bit sporadic however. It could go 100km between regens or 10,000 km for whatever reason. That diesel clatter is most notable when cold however. Once warm it doesnt make itself too well known. All in all i highly recommend this car to those looking for an excellent all rounder. Good power, good fuel econemy, good comfort, loads of features, good handling and that renowned honda reliability. Ill drive it til it stops

@@johnflavin1602 in these they can just decide to do one as you drive, or bring on a few dash lights and do one(they go off afterwards usually) or youll have to get a diagnostic scan tool to go through the settings and enable it manually. If the dpf is too blocked the car wont even think about doing a regen even with diagnostics so youll have to either replace or clean the dpf. At that stage youll have loads of dash lights on and a severe lack of power however

@@alexhickey5633 Thanks for your reply. Currently have a 2.2 Mazda diesel which is a nightmare. Keeps blocking up with carbon. It was de-carboned at 70,000 km and now needs to be done again at 111,000 km. De-carbon by Mazda dealer costs €900 here in Ireland.

@@johnflavin1602 my humble advice on that 2.2 diesel mazda is to get rid of it. My dad has one. Currently on its last legs with a blown head gasket. We caught it early however before it went very bad and managed to somewhat save it for now. Bottle of steel seal into the coolant. Mazda quoted him 10k for the new engine plus labour which pretty much writes it off. We were told the head gasket can be done but they dont last long after the repair. That 2.2 skyactiv engine is notorious for blowing up in some way whether it be fuel dilution, timing chain, injectors, head gaskets and sometimes wearing the exhaust cam shaft. Get rid of it while its going some bit right because itll only break your heart as time goes on. My dads one only has 125k km on the clock which really isnt high mileage at all. His previous car was a 99 accord with a 1.8 petrol engine in it. Thing was and still is bomb proof(currently in storage). Never 1 single problem with the engine other than oil burning like all honda 4 bangers. 230k miles or roughly 360k km on the clock. Hes disappointed with his 2.2 mazda cx5 to say the least. Oh, and from one irish man to another, hello!

@@alexhickey5633 Thanks Alex. The problem with offloading it is nobody wants it due to its bad rep. I enquired about trading it in against a petrol Civic of the same year (2016) and the dealer wanted €8,000. It’s worth half the value it should be. My only hope is there’s an independent mechanic over here who specialises in Mazda diesels so I’m hoping he can assess it for me. I’ve 121,000 km on the clock, bought it new and looked after it and it was serviced regularly by Mazda dealer. My previous car, a 2 litre Octavia diesel also gave trouble with injectors and EGR. I went from one bad car to another.

we have this model at home, same 1,6 diesel and that horible noise which you recorded here in review is definetly not the same as we have... I barely can hear its diesel when front hood is closed! Of course when i open it, you can easily hear its diesel, but inside you definetly wont tell. I can even provide a video about this, but that noise you have recorded its redicilous... I dont know what was done with that car engine which you tested ... anyway, i am sure you recorded that sound with hood open even you show video when hood is closed...

The idle on them is rattly and diesely but above that in my experience is very similar to a petrol. Honda are very good that way. My 1.6 diesel civic is the 3rd honda in my family and lives up to its predecessors. Solid on the road and ample power for almost all drivers

Excellent review on the Civic 1.6 iDTEC. Chances are we won't get the oil burner down in NZ as the government penalises diesel users in an awkward tax system. We drive the 1.8 Auto with leather and 18 inch Krypton alloys. I must say, the quality of this UK Honda is tops, lovely soft tactile surfaces make this a great place to be. Out on the open country roads she feels very planted and lots of fun. We have travelled 21000 km's since December 13 and has as expected has Honda reliable. Starting to see a few more on the roads here and the design is a huge respite from the blandness that abounds.

Theyre clattery enough when cold, but thats mainly diesel knock aswell. They hit this almost vtec like thing above half throttle when cold and remind you that you are in fact driving a diesel. A little bit rough on idle as is to be expected with diesels but above 1000 rpm its an incredibly smooth engine. Clean burning too. Ive gone about 3000km since my last service, another 7 to go and the oil is remarkably clean for a diesel. Usually they blacken it scary fast. Even when changing it, it still has a hint of golden brown oil colour to it. Honda recomends a 15k km service interval but tbh thats just stretching things too far. I change mine every 10k. Honda is known for building solid petrol engines, and i own one of those with almost a quarter million miles on it (360k km roughly) and it still does its thing. I recon these 1.6 diesels will have a similar story to tell in years to come
