Honda Africa Twin or KTM 890 Adventure (owner discussion)

The Honda Africa Twin was always my dream bike, and my dream came true when I purchased and drove my 22' Honda Africa Twin DCT home one year ago. There are so many thing I love about the Africa Twin, from performance, comfort, features, and of course the looks! But at the end of the day, especially on dirt, I feel myself worn out and fatigued from handling the massive size and up top weight of the Africa Twin.
In todays ride, we will talk about why I am thinking about getting rid of my Africa Twin for a KTM 890 Adventure. So come along and lets think about this together and have a conversations in the comments.

I moved from a 1200 GS to an 890 ADV for the exact same reason: I would often hesitate to turn down some random track because the idea of turning that beast around was *always* in the back of my mind. And it is absolutely the case that on the 890 ADV I just don’t hesitate, I just go explore. The GS is definitely “better” for long distance stuff (think 700+ mile days) but I don’t do that as much these days. Every single time I get on the 890 I smile - *such* a fun bike, zero regrets.

I have a 1250gsa and in the same boat as you. I want to sell it and get a 890 adv r like you since I mainly ride to dirt and don't travel cross country anymore. I heard you can add the Non R windscreen to the R for better wind protection.

I think the KTM 890 Adv is the wrong 890 variant for you. If you want the off road agility of the KTM but also don’t want to loose the comfort and touring feel of the AT, then the best mix of both those worlds is the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition. With the Norden 901 Expedition you get all the creature comforts of a touring Adv bike but you get the KTM 890 off road agility and capability.

I traded off my KTM 690 Enduro R because it was too shaky with the single but it single tracked great. I purposely bought a 2016 Africa Twin because it doesn't have a TFT dash to go bad and the traction control can be turned off on the fly with holding the switch and one button turns off the rear ABS. I just have Shinko 705's on it and not afraid to go off road anywhere. I can throw this one around pretty good and have thought of taking it to Twin Hills off road park in Bridgeport Texas where they run hard enduros and seeing just how well it does. My buddy had the 1090 Adventure R and it was a huge top-heavy pig with too much power for off road and I rode another buddy's KTM 790 and it was nice off-road, but was too light for me on long road trips on the highway with the winds we sometimes get here in North Texas ( DFW area). I have not ridden the new Africa Twin but have ridden another buddy's 2022 Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 and love it too , but it's heavier than my Africa Twin it feels. Sorry for the rant. I know what it is, there are so many nice looking bikes out there that we want to try them all.

Ok, I have the answer for you. I had a Tenere 700 for about 2 years, then got tired of the height and generally bored with it. (Most bikes don't entertain me for more than 18 months.) I decided to go with the new 2023 KTM 890 Adventure non R version. I was ready for a little more excitement than the perfectly calm T7. I loved the T7, but it just didn't excite anymore. I bought the KTM and have never looked back. Just the low seat height makes it worthwhile. I knew ahead of time that it would be noisier engine, and not as refined. So I was able to make the transition happily, knowing what I was getting. Before the T7, I owned an Africa Twin AS DCT, and same thing, it was so good and predictable I got bored with it. Loved it, but wanted to shed some pounds, thus went to the T7. So, I am guessing you are just so comfortable with the AT, it has become sort of boring, totally predictable and comfortable, but yet a tiny bit boring. My solution to that dilemma is move on to what might bring some gusto back. The 890 Adventure has some serious torque when you wish, and for me, brought back some gusto that the perfect T7 had lost. Good luck with whatever you do!!!!

I'm having the same conversation in my head. The 890 checks a few boxes for me that I know I'd like; cruise control, tubeless tires, 50-70 lbs lighter than my 17 AT DCT, with a lower center of gravity and more HP. That said, more than a few long term owners have mentioned quirky issues that would drive me nuts. I'm frequently out in the middle of nowhere, alone and never thing twice about my AT starting and getting me home. I see in your vid list another suggestion you followed through with switching to an 890. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the content.

It sounds like you want a "light", relatively powerful and reliable dirt oriented large capacity bike. It also sounds like you like what the Africa Twin gives you. If I were in your shoes I'd think about keeping the AT and swapping out/upgrading the CRF for a Yamaha T7. This way you would have two ultra reliable bikes that will cover all the things you want to do. Does the unicorn motorcycle that you are chasing really exist? I doubt it and you probably also doubt it which is why you already have two bikes that offer different things. AT and T7, what an awesome combination!

  • @gregsilver

@@sanjosejeff This... I had an 890 ADV for a trip, standard but still with rally mode and some decent tyres (pirelli scorpion rally STR) What a bike... Handles good on road, insanely confidence inspiring off road, it rides itself, allows you to experiment, push the boundaries without constantly wobbling around thinking the next badly tilted rock is you down on your arse... I just got an AT1100 long termer, I'll try it off road, but just immediately sitting on it, general impressions are not too great. Imo the footpegs are too far forward, and right in the worst spot, where you'd want to put your feet out. The 890 ADV has the footpegs and seat so if you need to put your foot down, your feet are in their most natural, strongest, most stable position. The AT you have to put your feet behind the pegs or infront, and both positions are very unstable/weak, if you need to put a foot down to catch the bike, especially with the AT's heft and verrryy top heavy nature, you're not catching that... And that thought alone, makes you a better, more confident rider on the 890. Power wise, again, the 890 is actually more powerful on the spec sheet, and I think in reality it hauls itself better too, or just as well as the AT at least. It's easier to ride, KTM rider aids are significantly better too, just nothing against it, especially the 2023 MY onwards... I've yet to draw full conclusion on the AT but I have ridden it on an showcase off road track for about an hour and it wasn't too bad, but the 890 is another league for off road riding.

Skills come with experience just like walking or writing, the more you practice the better you get. As for the strength side of it... just put the bike down and find a preferred way of lifting it (everything in life is a process) and do that five times a day... or buy one of those bike lifting gadgets... things will come together quicker than you think and then you will wonder why you ever thought about a KTM.

One of the most inaccurate comments I’ve seen generalizing KTM. Must be a left wing democrat

Before you make a move on a KTM, look into the reliability issues they’ve had. Hondas are bulletproof!

I had chance to ride KTM790 Adventure back to back against my T7 and I came out unimpressed. I came in with high expectations for the KTM cause it's so hyped. The thing I disliked the most which people praise was the lower tanks/CG, it felt like I was fighting the bike in the corners due to the low CG. I'm pretty sure I can get used to that with time if I purchased one, I really didn't like it. Another thing, the motor sounds like bag of marbles. The plus for the KTM was the lower seat height and the bike was pretty fast. That's just my experience. I have no issues taking the T7 on technical off-road. I suggest staying with Africa Twin. I'd like to ride one, they say the handling is similar to the T7 with more power.

I almost got a T7 before the twin, about same height/feel, but the twin is about doing LE the up too weight. That’s the biggest downfall. I think the transalp will be the sweet spot
