So excited you’ve done this album! I remember after watching Dancer in the Dark (you should check it out, it’s amazing!), I read an article on how she gets inspiration for her music and she said she would hear rhythms and patterns in everyday things around her. Trains, a washing machine spinning, whatever it was, and she’d use those things in her music. A lot of Dancer in the Dark illustrates this as well.

I believe that Bjork wanted an organic feel to this album, as if it was a living entity with the sound of a beating heart but also having the feelings, desolate in nature yet with hidden beauty, akin to the plains of Iceland in order to make up the dna of its soundscape. There was a point where this clicked for me & I completely understood Bjork's intentions with this project and I don't think I have ever found anything that has come close to capturing similar.

Unravel is my favorite on the album, as well. There is a video of Bjork rehearsing the song in her New York penthouse before a concert, and it's honestly one of my favorite versions of the song. Alarm call reminds me of her work with The Sugarcubes in some ways. And I love the lyric "I'm no f*cking Buddhist, but this is enlightenment".

Björk gets more and more experimental so her albums become more difficult to digest the deeper you go. I'd definately recommend going back to Debut, and then allowing each album to integrate with repeated listens before you feel that you are ready to explore the next one. Chrono sequence from herein for sure. You might want to check out some music videos as well, she's well known for mindblowing evocative visuals too.

I remember hearing Joga (the first single) on the radio before it came out, and although I'd got all her records up to that point (which had already included some really hard and weird remixes), it just didn't make sense to me. I mean, the quality wasn't great and I just heard garbled drums and not enough of the strings to get a vibe with it. It's definitely become one of my favourites now though. Bachelorette went the other way - addicted to it instantly, find it a bit wearying now. Unravel remains timeless though. She released all the singles for this album in stupidly huge VHS and 3CD boxes, which were pretty expensive* but really cemented her status as a visual artist - all her packaging had always been beautiful but now it was absurd, and she wanted people to absolutely know about those videos. That said, CD ROM singles with videos on them had been a thing for nearly 10 years by that point, so it was just a silly flex lol. I think the album I love the most is probably one of her least popular - Biophilia - it's so nerdy and abstract, and it was almost essential (at least for me, a very unmusical person) to read up on the specific mechanics of each song to appreciate them. They're absolutely bonkers, for example: "A group of pendulums were put together, creating patterns with their moves, transmitting the movements of the Earth to the sound of a harp, making the song "Solstice"." ""Solstice" features 7/6 and 4/6 time signatures, "Hollow", "Crystalline" and "Moon", all feature a 17/8 time signature" "Thunderbolt" contains arpeggios, inspired by the time between when lightning is seen and thunder is heard" but I swear once you get over it, it's one of her best and purest pop albums. how brave are you? * boring note on the cost of a CD single in the UK in the mid 90s so they'd been getting longer and longer, with artists releasing singles over an hour long (full of live versions, demos, new songs and remixes), so chart rules limited them to 40 minutes (bjork has several that are this long). prices rose from 99p to £3.99 fairly rapidly, and then chart rules limited them to 3 songs only at a maximum of 24 minutes long, at the same price, to enforce fairness, as not all bands could compete with remix costs or live recording setups. Fancy packaging was also outlawed by the charts and defined as "merchandise" - and Joga got caught up in all this and was never deemed an eligible single. The cost of the Joga box was technically pretty reasonable - 3 long CDs, several new tracks and remixes, and a video, for about £20, but it was still quite unpalatable in a world where other singles had recently cost £1.99, especially to a student... and the VHS was just not an attractive novelty at this point. They made sure to have boring normal versions of later singles, but man, what a golden age. If you didn't buy singles in the 90s you were missing out on so much! Still can't get over the fact that people are expected to buy one song without any bonus treats in the digital age.

I believe Unravel is more about making nee love with each other when they get together again, because when they're apart the devil collects their previous love (kinda the love they already have weakens being apart). Great video, I went through her releases at the time and of course I loved her but didn't realise just how visionary and ahead of her time she is, great to see reactions, it's weirdly emotional to see someone 'buzz' about her Also, watch her All Is Full Of Love video, different grittier mix and the video is mind blowing for the time.❤

Ahead of her time? This was mainstream music in the 90's. Personally I prefer Sugarcubes which has a more playful, young and fun attitude. This is kinda overproduced and all over the place.
