Homesteading Family Living Off-Grid in a Spectacular Earthship
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This inspiring off-grid homesteading family lives in a renovated stone earthship. They grow their own food, collect rainwater, use solar power, have composting toilets, and they have a pond that filters their grey water. On top of living an eco friendly lifestyle, they dedicate their work to important projects like urban gardening and promoting industrial hemp as "Hempbassadors."
This stone Earthship is now available for short and long-term rentals on Airbnb! Check it out here:

During the winter, they typically take 2-4 months off to travel, which is financially possible for them because they don't have a mortgage (the house only cost $15,000 when they bought it).
Their daughter, Emma, is in the first grade, but they take her out of school while they travel and homeschool her on the road.
Francis & Marie have dreamt of being self-sufficient for a long time. For 8 years they renovated their earthship home, planted their permaculture gardens, and prepared for the day they'd be able to live their dream full-time.
For over 2 years now they've been living on their dream homestead. They grow apples, berries, and other fruits which they preserve for winter. They also grow vegetables, and collect eggs from their chickens. In the summer, their grocery bill can be as low as $30/week because they produce so much of their own food.
Much of their harvest is kept cool in their root cellar although they would like to have a fridge.
The home is a passive solar home with a greenhouse in the front. It can stay above zero degrees on it's own, but they have a wood stove - an Amish Pioneer Princess - to heat the house, to cook, and to heat their hot water.
For rainwater, they have 3 collection systems. One is a tank in front of the house that collects water from the greenhouse, and they use a solar powered pump to transfer it into an underground cistern.
Another tank collects rainwater from the roof, and a third collects rainwater from their shed. In total they can have 10,000 litres of fresh water when all of the tanks are full.
They don't have a well yet so they get their drinking water from a cabin they have access to down the road.
They have a small solar power system for their lights, the water pump, and for the internet. They'd eventually like to invest in a bigger system but for now it works well.
Thanks for watching!

I love that being connected to nature makes you appreciate everything a little more. When it rains, you’re happy and thankful. When it’s sunny you’re also happy and thankful. It's funny how people assume when you're off grid you are secluded and off in some remote area. We are also off grid in Canada (cold Northwestern Ontario). We have on grid houses all around us. I work 6min away, my neighbor lives across the road. I'm 20min from a hospital. We have solar power and vehicles, even internet...when it wants to work. Blizzards all the time, shoveling is great exercise and helpful neighbors are great too, no forest fires that I've heard of. Off grid literally means you are not connected to electrical grid. It's a beautiful and satisfying way to live.
You gather thousands in debt, buy all kinds of things you don't need, and then work constantly to pay off the things you don't use. The older I get, the more I think of a life like this, you know a real life.

Brian Exactly. I only wish building land was affordable in the UK, I'd love to build something like this. Unfortunately building land here is scarce, and open countryside is heavily protected from development, the only way to do this is buy an existing house on a good plot and pull it down, you're looking at anything from £150k to well over £1m before you start.

I’m 59 and vegan. If I could live my life over again, I would live like this. I’m making some changes now, like heating and cooking with wood. In the past I collected rain water and will start again. Someday I’d like to install solar. I envy your mini farm. Congrats on living your dream life. Blessings. 🙏

Diana Thank you for your reply. I know burning coal is bad because it emits mercury. I heat with electric now which is so expensive. There is an old oil boiler in this house but it doesn’t work. I don’t like propane because of explosion hazard. Solar is an option but that will cost at least $15,000 US and I’m not sure for Pennsylvania winters that will supply enough warmth as the sole source of heat. So I thought a wood boiler might be a good option.

Diana I live in an old farmhouse built in 1850 out in the country on 3 acres. It’s little challenging to know just how to heat it. Perhaps one day I can go solar . But for right now that kind of money is going to install a much-needed new roof and septic system. Thanks again for your reply.
This is how life is supposed to be and these guys are living it up. It's great to see that some people have managed to escape the evil clutches of corporate slavery and live close to nature and yet not miss out on anything that life has to offer. Kudos to them for figuring it out. I am on a similar path and hopefully, my new passive house in the mountains will be ready by the end of this year. It's a lot of work but it's been worth it thus far. Living off the grid has been a dream for me and last year, I gave it a go for 6 months and it was the best ever phase of my life despite all the hardships. It's only gonna get better from here with experience.
Simply amazing, here are two brilliant individuals!

I think by culturally tolerant she means the girl will be able to keep her stance facing the diverse cultural assaults of modern and future urban life. It's a fact people grown up in countryside are more psychologically secure, they know the basics of life by dealing in them in real life. It becomes subconscious understanding of sound principles of natural life, when exposed right from the beginning - in childhood.
I want to live like this, I want to find someone who thinks the same way, to live like that. And I believe - in the future it will be so :) Thanks for video!

I'm happy, at least someone else is living a life which I always dreamt of. Happy living ")
If we all could live in this way. What a wonderful place it could be.
We love living Off-grid! There definitely are people who are and aren't cut out for it though. We just happen to be ones who are.
An earthship with gardens about, plus a campervan for traveling during winter, is my idea of The Life. My earthship would be in an urban neighborhood that has many empty lots to turn into community gardens.
I am really envious of the family. Wish my life is like that
Экологически чистая конопля творит чудеса! Вот как надо жить экологично!
I absolutely love this! Self sustaining with all the gardening- a dream come true!!🤗🤗
This is ABSOLUTELY BEYOND AMAZING!!!
Hempbassadors!! Love it!!💜 THIS IS THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE!!
Blessings to this family. They are inspiring!
I don’t know if they will read the comments, but if they have a lot of humidity, there is a machine that just takes the humidity from the air to make clean drinking water. A normal house can get a gallon a day. THIS house can triple that, I’m sure! Cool place! I’d like to know how they care for the place when they are gone for 4 months at a time, though. 💙💙💙

That's pretty cool, I have a dehumidifier and use the water it collects to water my plants. But a dehumidifier that creates drinking water would be even better!! I'm going to look it up! Have you tried it yet?

Thanks for the idea! Do you have the reference of this machine? The house is low maintenance and we have neighbours and friends who take care of our house went we are away.

My ultimate goal in life.... To be self sufficient. 💓💓💓
We where on rain water on a block of land by the sea 24 years ago, I got sick from the lack of minerals and vitamins, the land was sand, so our home grown vegies had no goodness even though we where adding compost and minerals it was passing straight through the sand, and our rain water had no minerals in it because it never landed on dirt, to gather minerals from the land, it came off the roof of the house. Greetings from Sydney Australia.
I commend these extraordinary people very, very much, as they have found a way to coexist with the world in such a way (so remarkable), as to be free from the constraints, that very often, become the limits to the quality of life that every human being cherishes. In my mind this is what it means to be free.

There are my favorite kind of videos from you guys! Family homesteaders making it work 💛
Wow!!! Its a dream to live like
These guys are awesome. I love how they have their daughter in a regular school too.
Great video! It literally changed my entire perspective on how people like them live. I’m very envious
To control the humidity consider putting in some under ground heat tubes just like an earthship .. and then allow ventilation out of the greenhouse area -which will remove the excess moisture..

Love seeing people living life
This channel helps me to know myself to understand who am I and what is love! Nature has the answer to all our problems in life that's why I am looking forward to go off grid but looking for someone who has the same vision for farming, gardening, painting, writing,.. to share the journey in love, peace, respect in the happiness for being alive and to appreciate the inside beauty of one another. If there is someone who feel the same, let me know!
