Homesteading - DIY vertical wicking strawberry planter
In this episode, Angela shows us how to make a vertical wicking strawberry planter. This is based on the raised wicking bed design, where the bed has a reservoir of water in the base and the water 'wicks' up through the soil to the plant roots.
Eventually, we plant on having about 10 of these spread out around the place.

Good timing for me. Spring is trying to come early here in Texas. I love this idea and have time to make one. Thank you!
Nice video. I like how you created the plant holes in the side. Y’all are so smart.

Thanks, Charlie.
love your video posts, so good to have ingenuity and Australian based. Will be trying swarm commander in SE Qld next season. Thanks for the instructions on using it.
So simple! I've been wondering how to make these. HEAT!
So happy to find this! I made one almost identical about 28 years ago for all my herbs.

That's awesome!
Very nice vid! Also a nice idea to mount it on a tree stump, too bad I don't have one. I'm gonna have to just put it in a big tub. The upside is that I could put some more strawberries in the tub, though. Gonna follow along with your video when I get some time for the easter weekend. Take care and greetings from the Netherlands!
very cool idea, it lets you vertically plant strawberries in soil! I like it, everything similar I've seen and reviewed on my channel uses hydroponics. great video, Cheers from Canada!
Great video!!! I am make two just like that!!! Thanks!!
Hello from NE Georgia, USA.✌😊 I've seen several ways to do this but the others didn't have the cup mold and that's what caught my eye with yours. This is brilliant! 👍 I could also see putting long skinny pegs (or pvc) through it for viney flowers like morning glories or climbing roses since I have one that grows as fast as kudzu. LOL! Hmmm, I wonder if a hair dryer would get hot enough to mold it? 🤔 It's just a thought. Thanks so much for sharing! 👍😊
I hope all is well!

All is well. Thanks.
Great idea but worries me is the bottom plants getting to much water and the top not enough.
There bloody brill
have you tried wrapping the center hole in landscape cloth?
Zwicking really only goes up 300 mm so top needs watering aroung the pipe more often than filling the bottom
Hi... do you think we can grow carrot too in such vertical pipes ?
I made a similar one with PVC but have been reading how PVC is not food safe. I tried using HDPE but it bubbles like crazy when I try to heat it. Thoughts?
Great video was size diameter pvc is that?

150mm/6".
Question how are you able to keep the top plants watered ?

The water wicks up through the soil/growing medium.
I am a bit confused about the inner pipe Why do you have to put another pipe inside? Can’t you water it straight in the tower?

You can but the inner pipe gets the water directly to the base. The idea of wicking systems is to have the water reservoir at the bottom.
Do you fill the inner pipe with soil

No, leave that empty.
your dog needs a longer leash. poor thing.
I feel really dumb for using a glass bottle instead of a 2” piece of pvc.
