The best way to save space and enlarge a room is to knock down these old fashioned chimneys. That is the best way to enter the 21st century and not these awful electric false fireplaces. The last owner was quite cheap on the renovation... Hope he won't make a cent profit from the rent if per chance he rents out.

They miss out lawyer's fees and stamp duty charges, which are high for second (investment) homes.

It would be nice to know how these buyers are financing these purchases/upgrades, i.e. whether they are doing the whole thing in cash, using their own money, or on finance, and if the latter, using what sort of facility (bridge financing?).

It's funny how they ALL seem to come out of these projects massively quids-in. I'm sure it's not that easy, and they pick on positive stories.

Homes at auction are usually a firesale auction by the bank after foreclosures due to non-payment. The bank isn't trying to get the best bang for their buck after 12 months, they want it gone now and are willing to take a pretty serious hit. So if you can get a property for 70% of it's actual value, then upgrade it a bit, it's actually pretty dang hard and requires significant mistakes to run a loss on these. That said, I'm sure they pick out the positive ones, but I don't think positive ones are the minority.
