I've never heard of homes being swept into the sea on the east coast like this before. This is new. These days, no one should every build near the water. Any kind of water. Nothing is likely to be so secure as to invest your life and heart into such a thing.

I was thinking the same thing, although the storm surge has pushed up the shoreline by quite a bit. The residences in peril, the ones we're seeing on the news, were likely not that close to the original shoreline. But still, you're right...residences, world-over, should not be built close to any shorelines. With climate change, these storms will become, and in some places already are, a regular occurrence, particularly along the Atlantic shores 😐

Small tight nitted towns of island people that fished. The twine loft or fishing stage walking distance from your home no highways or road system so why not put your home close to your place of income and survival who would think that 150 feet from the shore wouldn't be safe never has this happened before here. So unfortunately it did like a lot of people in New Orleans or others that super storms hit its unfortunate and devastating the big thing is support and aid for the family's affected they need it it's our duty as newfies

Thanks Texas. As an East coast Canadian who thankfully is inland a bit and was very fortunate we do have people just 20 minutes drive away who have basements and even kitchens filled with Atlantic ocean water. It's very sad. I hope no lives were lost. I also hope every Canadian will remember that without electricity most heating options are dangerous. I still remember my heart hurting for Texans who tragically died during your cold weather power outage. After the weather the biggest danger is carbon dioxide and fire. I also remember the boy who died of cold in his bed in Texas. I urge all Canadians to invite others in. Don't let neighbours stay alone. It's a good time for a one bedroom sleep over. Gather all your blankets and sleep one room family style so that body heat keeps everyone out of danger. This is when you want your "big boy" children in bed with Mom and Dad or Grandma and Grandpa.

If extreme weather events are due to climate change, then you have to look at all extremes. In Canada, the worst hurricane was 1954, highest Great Lake water levels 1976, lowest 1998, worst winter storm 1974, hottest summer 1949. Climate change can only be predicted by data over an extended period and even then is not a certainty, only a theory.

The real reason is that we take on the same thing as the U.S.A homes aren’t meant to last a hundred years like old ones, new homes built now in both countries are made from a minimal wooden superstructure and thin drywall, cheap and easy to build, homes are flimsily and meant to be easily replaceable.

Obviously we can still buy concrete and steel from other places at massive cost, and cities are all about massive costs.
