    This was the item i was most excited about. I’m FAR into the apple ecosystem, but not with the smart speaker. I really wanted the first homepod, but i didn’t want to fork over the price tag. and adding to that, it was apples first attempt. Where other companies had almost mastered it and apple was trailing behind. but with the mini i think that’s all going to change. I’m for sure going to preorder it as soon as i can.

    This release has me pretty excited. I’ll grab two of them upon release, and likely two additional once I am able to see how they sound. The questions I have currently... - Stereo pairing. While they mentioned the stereo capability of (2) units in the same room, I’m wondering how it will work it you put a pair of them in front of/under a TV that’s using an AppleTV4K box. Wondering if you can choose the pair as your audio output and be able to forgo the use of a sound bar. Hopefully? - Intercom. Would I be wrong to assume that Intercom will likely be utilizing the Family Sharing framework for establishing your household structure? While this Intercom feature certainly ties-in to the whole HomeKit/HomePod niche...it seems like something that would be used by any family that ‘shares’ a household. Sort of the new version of a ‘Family Group Text’. As far as Apple making the ‘Smart Home Simple’. I think that’s great, and this (as you point out) might be the easy entry point for current iPhone users that are interested in starting their Smart Home Journey. But, I kinda believe that ‘those people’ are the consumers that will still be choosing Alexa - because they are SO inexpensive (often free). While probably not the beat way to explain my opinion...I sorta see people ‘accidentally’ stumbling into HomeKit Smart Home Tech, because I see this product being something that is given as a Christmas/Holiday present. Thanks Bradl! For your first question, I think the answer is yes, but I guess we'll know for sure soon enough (I'll also be getting two so we can try it out!). And yes, I think you are probably right about the intercom feature being utilized by family starting also. I definitely don't see this wiping Alexa out of the game. There is definitely still a place for that but this does fill a gap in the market. And I still see those "clueless" Aunts and Uncles buying the cheapest Alexa options if anything. My opinion, the new HomePod mini may actually be purchased by the more informed, tech savvy consumers as gifts FOR those clueless Aunts and Uncles. For example, now I can give my "clueless" Aunt or Uncle a HomePod Mini for Christmas, which I think is a much better choice and a better gift, instead of an Alexa Dot without having to spend $200+. I'd be a little surprised if they drop the price so soon for the holiday season, but I could be wrong. Hey, just might give me a good reason to go get another! Thanks for watching Brad!

I tried changing one light to another room and the name went from "garage downlights" to just downlights in favourites but i can't get that to show like that on every light🤷‍♂️😬?? In favourites I just want to see the lights names and not the room to case it's easier to just look for the light if in a hurry 🤔 and I have a lot of light soo😆

    One issue I am having with my smart home is trying to use items that use Bluetooth connectivity and they are at the edge of the Bluetooth range to my Apple TV 4K that I am using as a hub. I am wondering if Apple will use the Bluetooth in the speakers to extend the range of these devices. This would be sorta like what Aqara did with their Zigbee hubs and child devices, where a child device can act as a bridge between another child device and the bridge. I am planning on getting a couple of the HomePod Mini's; but if it had that capability, I would get several more and put one in every room of my house. Thoughts?

  • @ShaneCreates

    @ShaneCreates

    Good point. Yea, I'd assume it should work like that with bluetooth devices. Just as the other HomeKit hubs work that way, so should this since it can work on it's own as a HomeKit Hub.

I’m still in the process of moving all my old Echo devices out of network, but that Echo Show 8 I have is a game changer and I wish Apple would bring a product like that to market. The intercom was a nice surprise and I think it’s a better implementation then the Alexa drop in/announce feature but I plan on get a few of these over time to fill the house. I hope they could do a clock one for the mini like they did with the echo dot so I can add to my bed.

  • @ShaneCreates

But it took us this long just to get a small HomePod so I'm not holding my breath on that one. Till then, I'll just have to stick with my wall-mounted iPad...

    Didn't think I'd ever get jazzed about anything Apple but, this fits so well into my slowly developing Homekit system at a reasonable (Apple prices reasonable?) price that I'm actually jazzed. I didn't watch the Apple unveiling and only heard about the iPhone 12 from other sources. It doesn't excite me because 5G service is still not up to any reasonable level, even here in a major metropolitan area - the SF Bay Area. Shane, your release of this video clued me into the HomePod Mini and it's potential. Now, I'm actually jazzed about it. Apple should pay you for that! :-) I already have an Apple TV 3rd gen that we only use for AirPlay on very rare occasion. It isn't Siri capable and can't be used as a home hub. We have a basic DISH subscription and a couple of ROKU TVs and those cover all we could ever want as far as TV viewing in several rooms. In fact, we've considered cutting the cord with DISH for a while if we can work out a streaming plan at a lower, recurring cost as we only really use about 1/3rd of the DISH channel offerings that we have to pay for. And, we have audiophile grade stereo systems so, mini speakers just don't appeal to our spoiled ears for musical enjoyment. So, an upgrade to the Apple TV just hasn't been in the cards for us. This HomePod Mini on the other hand, is. It would add the Homekit hub and Siri command functionality we are seeking at a better price point than a new Apple TV device. I can see acquiring several over a year or two period to enhance our Homekit capabilities in several rooms. It will be better than pulling an iPhone out of a pocket and loudly saying "Hey Siri". The intercom feature will be a selling point with the Mrs. as she likes to have me at her beck and call. She's been watching too many period pieces on PBS Masterpiece and thinks I'm one of the servants. :-)

    Sounds like this is perfect for someone in your situation. I was actually in a similar situation when the first HomePod came out...I wanted a Siri smart speaker for my main living room/kitchen area (after retiring Alexa) but already had a decent surround sound (didn't need an "amazing speaker" and already had multiple Apple TVs (no need for another hub). That's why I wanted a smaller, more affordable HomePod for so long. And I think many people are in similar situations. And I can relate. I'm always missing texts and calls from the wife when in my studio office so this intercom feature will become very useful I suspect. Just hoping the feature doesn't get abused...lol

    Two HomePod Minis added to stereo HomePods as back speakers in a room. Giving a (sudo) 5.1 Home Cinema profile. Then, play audio through same. This, like 5.1 audio will give a sudo Quadrophonic sound. Been doing this for years using a 5.1 Home Cinema box. Already have the two HomePods, will be ordering 2 Minis on Nov 6.

    - I completely agree with you on the use of the U1 chip for spatial awareness. But, I was stumped on how Apple who needs to keep things easy to use for their users could use the chip to define a room especially the door to the room. Knowing the exact dimensions of a room and all entrances (doors and Windows) allows for an accurate smart home experience. The U1 has very high resolution measuring capability but how would it know the boundaries of the room it is in? Then it dawned on me the LIDAR. It can precisely map a room, you identify entrances (possibly can be done via software automatically or define them similarly to setting zones in a HomeKit Secure camera). Identifying the location of the HomePod containing a U1 now gives you everything needed to determine if you (you must have a U1 on you iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPod, or AirTag) have entered a room and where you are in the room. ShortCuts can now handle your needs based on what you want and when you want it. I hope this is true because I think it would propel Apple to the lead in the smart home market.

    Joseph - There were conversations like 20-years ago of being able to 3-D map a room/house/building using the send/receive data gathered by the a WiFi router. This U1 & LIDAR is going to be able to take that to a crazy next-level. I am anxious for the day when I can simply tell Siri to ‘follow me’ with my music of choice throughout the house. That’ll be cool.

  • @ShaneCreates

    Joseph, yes great point. Apple has been putting a lot of resources into LIDAR. This combination of U1 and LIDAR opens up possibilities that I don't think I can comprehend yet and I think you're right, it will propel Apple way ahead of the rest. Again, I think Apple is playing the long game here and I think they have a good plan on where this is all headed.

    Not only is :UWB going to do precise indoor location but with AirTags and AR you’re going to be able to walk into a room and a pop up on your iOS device will show exactly where the missing device is. The HomePod mini is Apple’s first product with Thread support. Thread is a layer for IP control of home automation devices and is key for the future transition to Connected Home over IP. Thanks for bringing it up Shane. I’m seeing reviews where people want compare this against Google or Alexa and they don’t even bring it up. Why are people on YT doing Tech reviews that incapable of understanding and speaking on new tech.

  • @ShaneCreates

    Thanks for sharing that. And I agree, it's hard to compare against Google or Alexa at this point because, like I mentioned, I do think Apple is thinking about the long game more than the others. But that is difficult to put into physical talking points right now...especially since it's hard to even comprehend what may be possible with this technology 5+ years from now. While Alexa has been good to have, its big downfall in the home automation space is scenes with multiple device manufacturers. This is where HomeKit really stands out. Problem was the HomePod is so dam expensive and pulling out my phone all the time was dumb. Now with the mini I can say "Hey Siri, turn on Kitchen Low" and it will work with both my Philips Hue that I use for accent lighting and Lutron that I use for task lighting. One scene, one command. In order to get the same lighting look with Alexa you need to do two scenes and two different voice commands.
