Ms. Adell, sue the State of NY for putting you in jail, for all the damages, for the embarrassment of you being put into handcuffs, for the threat on your life...etc etc; How shameful that a Taxpayer, a Voting taxpayer, a Legal resident of New York, is put through this kind of nonsense in America!! All the Governors of each American State Need to take Notice. This was absolutely shameful that this is happening in America, as many continue to face major issues with squatters across the US. Truly shameful. Who is going to pay for all those damages that are now in her house!!! The Anti-Squatter Law should be very robust and clear , similar to the one signed in Florida this past March, if it isn't then an amendment (jail the squatter immediately, minimum one year in jail, restitution to the homeowner, removal is immediate, etc.,) needs to be done.

The simple solution is one rich people would hate. To lease a space you need to apply a for a permit. That permit process requires you to be proven to be the owner record of a property. That permit lists the person authorized to sign lease contracts, or several people if it's a business that has employees. You both must present ID and sign the lease in front of a county clerk. That lease is then filed, and copies given to both parties. Someone claims to have a squatter and police are called. Police are shown paperwork by potential squatter and call the county clerk. Clerk checks to see if there is a permit and signed lease. There is a lease? Person is not a squatter and person calling is arrested. There is no lease? Police forcibly remove squatter(s) and bring them to jail. This eliminates squatters staying in properties for any period of time, or tying up the civil courts. This also eliminates people getting scammed by losers who find empty houses to "rent" to unsuspecting third parties.

Would you be OK with immediately being evicted and your stuff thrown out?

Judge, the entire legal system protects the squatters. Now they have a new law in NY, that in order to take the squatters to court, you need to know the exact name. I have been chasing, searching for their name, because if the name is wrong or misspelled, the whole case is thrown out of the court. I had 9 unknown people. Police can't help you and are not willing to help you either. The city fined me multiple times for the amount of garbage outside the house. I have to clean up the outside every 2 weeks to avoid more fines. Just 2 weeks before court day, additional people move in, and those were not listed in the court case. The court is to protect them, not the taxpayers. After more than a year, I was able to take them out. The house was destroyed.

Invest in a security system with cameras so that you'll know immediately when someone trespasses and can have them arrested and removed the same day. $40+/mo is worth the prevention.

What a great story-homeowners should have the same right to have squatters removed as businesses do-police were able to immediately remove a woman who was living inside a sign on the roof of a business. But people break into a vet's house while he is in the hospital and he can't get them removed. Like this woman. There need to be reasonable renter's rights, but these squatters are not renters. People do need a place to live, but taking over innocent people's property is not the answer and should be dealt with immediately as the crime it is.

They are criminal trespassers who broke & entered in her home & others! They should never be called “squatters “, like they had rights to be on her private property! They are thieves and burglars! Should be held responsible for damaging her home , even if she could set up a lien on their accounts! The law needs to take it to the next level to hit their pockets. Like they do criminals who robbed banks , make them responsible for restitution! A lot of tax payers money including the homeowners was wasted for this so called amended law to pass, got police , district attorney, court system ect They need to pay for ALL the costs associated with unlawfully breaking into her property!

You shouldn't have to pay taxes on a home if someone is squatting in it. Bet theyd pass a useful law if ppl didnt pay the taxes because the government didn't do its job to protect the tax paying homeowner
