Homemade Swimming Pool Vacuum.

In this video, we make a homemade swimming pool vacuum. Over the last 20 years, we have went through multiple Polaris pool cleaners that utilized an independent pool pump. They would last a few years and the pump or the cleaner would die. They Never did a great job as they were totally random. From there, we went the independent robotic pool cleaner (Dolphin brand). They would work OK for a year or two and then problems would arise. I was never happy with any of these options.
One year, we were on vacation and I was drinking coffee pool side at sunrise and had the opportunity to watch the hotel staff clean the pool at this resort. They basically had a similar unit to the one we made. I had that light-bulb moment watching them work. From there, I decided to make my own self contained pool vacuum. The other nice thing is that the Texas Winter Storms taught us was it's nice to have a back-up pool system in the event your primary system goes down.
Our homemade system does both. It's an independent pool vacuum and a secondary pool filtration system. We will put some links below to the various parts we ordered on Amazon.

I like that there is no need to fill up the pool because the cleaner is recycling the water, just putting back in what is coming out. Pretty great invention.

Nice job, this is similar to mine, I also added a drinking water charcole filter in between the pump and the main filter. For a quicker filtration and less wear on the pump and electricity bill. Comes out crystal clear using no chemicals.

This is really great. I saw a pool pro using one and started searching for how to build one when I came across this video. Pool pumps are expensive so I love that you found a more affordable one for this setup. My pool filter is terrible when using the vacuum. I just don't get enough suction not to mention it is a hassle to setup. Love this solution. Thanks for sharing!

I have all the items needed except the cart and I bet there is one on our property somewhere. We have a 15 x 30 above the ground pool that is surrounded by trees and an empty dirt lot next door. Had a guy come to clean the pool and he just carried a pump and a hose. I loved it and said oooo I need to do that. But yours is even better because it recycles the water. No waiting to fill pool back up. Thank you for sharing this great idea.

Hello, 110v. I have to pour water into the pump before starting. , hold the hose under water to fill it and then turn the pump on. Takes a little practice to get it going. You can also leave the valve on the filter open until water comes out the top of it.

If you have a Polaris 280 along with the Polaris booster pump, run it just an hour or 30 mins a day especially with a easy pool like that. You are looking at 5 years at least before the booster pump needs replacing. I understand you had these setups before but you probably ran it too much, also the Polaris 280 is very easy to repair, just have to know what to look for that needs replacing. Question- why does your pump discharge line 'go vertical' above the filter, and then 'go down' into the filter intake? Seems like a waste of PVC pipe and elbows. Or, is that necessary to ensure the filter fills up completely and thus filters more efficiently. TIA

Hello, not sure what’s going on. Here is what I do: I submerge the hose going to the vacuum head to fill the hose with water. I make sure hose is fully extended in pool in a straight line. I then open the filter valve on top, then pour water into pump, and then turn it on. It struggles for a min or so, but ultimately takes off. When it’s sprays water out top of filter, I close that valve and I’m ready to go to work.

@@HeritageFarmsTexas thx for the quick reply...is there a reason you are connecting the pump to the filter with this rather long pipe setup? Is that because of water pressure? could a shorter pipe-length setup be used or will that be problematic? thx again!

I'm wondering if a check valve on either or both the inlet to the pump as well as one on the return pipe flowing out of the filter would work? I'm at Lowe's, heading to Home Depot and then Tractor Supply looking for check valves that might work. I dunno what else to try at this point.
