That’s supercool my man. Just a thought. You might want to change your gear ratio from motor to pump. Might help it not bogg down under no load. Respectfully of coarse.

i thought of using a power steering pump too, maybe one from a lorry, but guessed it would not be powerful enough or deliver enough fluid, now I know it will work.

It should be but it is going to be slow. I have a Harbor Freight back hoe which is about the same horsepower with a 13 inch bucket and have no problem pulling a heaping full bucket out of the ground every time. It will dig rocks out of the ground that are so big I can't lift them.
