Homemade Leaf Collector

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here is another homemade leaf catcher video showing how well it works and how we built one specific to our mower. I think you could adapt this to any riding mower and it would help this dreaded task. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Steve

I done the same thing for awhile, but i ended up using more of a straight piece of duct onto the lawnmower attachment strapped up to the frame with a Long durable Bag. Can go faster without clogging, but down side emptying the heavy bag.

This is a great idea. You really don't need 5 minutes to show that it works. ALL of these carts assume you have already wasted a TON of money on a bagger system that doesn't work. Getting that chute off of the deck is the problem. I don't think anybody making baggers is going to want to sell you that piece.

you can find a chute adapter. There is one on amazon that you have to cut and fit to your machine. Im going metal though

You may be right John. I couldn't see spending all that money on something I could pretty much copy with a little DIY. Some people can't, or don't want to, deal with all that time trying to figure things out. I am very happy with this thing as I been raking leaves for 40+ years. I still get the rake out though to get them out where I need them but this saves a lot of work. Happy building! I will be getting mine out very soon because the leaves are falling.

The most difficult part of a DIY bagger system is the part connecting to the cutting deck and you already have a manufactured one...

That is funny, I was thinking about some small LED lights in the grill but that is not on the high priority list. I better go check to make sure my mower is still in the shed!

I have a bagger system for the tractor that has that piece and some others. It's like two trash cans behind the seat, but they fill up fast and don't hold as much as this pull behind thingy does.

Will this work with grass also ive Been using a pull behind brush type it works almost ok i put mine in compost pile

It depends on what the grass is like when you cut it. When I pick up the leaves, they are dry, so I get the leaves and the grass comes with it. If you have wet leaves/grass it is going to be hard to pick up or if the grass is tall. Sometimes I just go slower and give the blades time to cut it up so it's not trying to push a ton of stuff. I think I know the brush you're talking about. Didn't work well for me because the ground is not flat, and I just wasn't happy with it. I also don't compost because I don't have enough beds to put it in. Hope this helps answer your question.

Do you use any special type of lawnmower blades and if so what kind and where did you purchase them? Thanks in advance for any information you can supply.

Nothing special on the blades, just the mulching blades that Sears sells and those are what I use all the time. I used this for the 3rd time this winter and it still works great. I think I said this in my video but the only time it clogs up is if I am trying to pick up leaves that have been sitting for a while and are wet & heavy or if there are just too many and we go too fast. Now we just know when to slow down some to give the mower time to dice them up and push them through the chute. I am very pleased with this as it has saved a lot of raking and bending over to fill bags. Good luck if you are thinking of making one and thanks, this reminded me that I haven't sharpened my blades since the beginning of grass cutting season so I should probably do that tomorrow.

didnt the hose end kink at the cart when you go around a bend? Also did you find the mower had enough force to push the leaves up into the longer path?

  • @steveshome

    @steveshome

No hose problems, maybe because the hose I use is wire reinforced so that makes it stronger. Its looks like a spiral in the hose which makes it spring back together like a slinky. With dry leaves this thing is great and yes, the force is enough to fill the whole collection box up as you saw in the video. Wet leaves work good too, you just have to watch the hose in case they back up since they are heavier.

Hi Ram, as I said in the video, the hose came from Grizzly and the metal reducer came from Home Depot. Everything else I had lying around but you could buy all the materials from any big box store except the hose. I think that is something you need to search for depending on the diameter hose you need and who you want to buy from. Hope this helps. Best, Steve

I been using a rake and snow shovel to get them out of the back. It is a very dusty way of doing it though so maybe dumping wood be better?
