We are still in the "use what works" phase of our careers. Wooden dowels duct taped to the top of a 5 gallon bucket for uncapping. I love the diy/hillbilly approach to beekeeping. Great video.

Built version 02 and it works great, thanks. Big money saver. Hey saw an uncapping video that uses a Harbor Freight type heat gun to uncap frames....unbelievable time saver.,....no muss no fuss, uncaps a frame in less than a minute. No tools required.

Myself I prefer the first one. It's more on the cheap. Plus everything to make it I already have. Great job J.C. thumbs up from KY

Yes, I knew I needed to point that out. I think these totes can be fine if they are used and cleaned all in the same day but I would not store honey in them. I make sure my buckets are always BPA free.

TY, Jason! Just another proof that you don’t need a Cadillac to drive around town. Sometimes i dont feel like getting all the big equipment out and making an even bigger mess, so i made a drain box like this one, except the larger box is on the top. I scratch open the cappings, put the frames upside down into the box and let all the honey drain out into the lower box. Yes, pretty lazy, but still puts a few more quarts of honey on the pantry shelf. 😃 !

I'm working on summer #6 as a hobby Bee Keeper , and ALL of my equipment is home made ! , Hive bodies , frames , covers , ect. .

Great instructional video Jason. I, too, could not see myself spending over $100 for a capping tank so I made one this season as well. I've not made a video on it though. I was having trouble think of the "screen" portion and I really like the idea of the refrig shelf and the excluder. I wound up using #8 screen and about a dozen SS machine screws with a washer and nut to hold it in place. I think your idea was easier and cheaper! I always enjoy your videos.

I like working with my hands so when I get the chance to make something, I'm all for it and when it saves money it's even better. Sometime I use Google images to get idea for parts when I am build something. For instance, I got this uncapping tank idea from there years ago and from there started looking for the parts. Thanks for being a fan of the video, much appreciated!

And the term refrigerator shelf is one I use often. In fact a ref. grate on the beach over an open fire way to cook on big beach fire.

Good stuff. I just made a honey bucket using the same gate. By far it's better than anything else available. The way the is preice threads into the outer gate instead of using a nut type system insures there will be know leaks.

both because they can be progressive. In that like you did start off with really simple and then build a fancy one once you have established you priorities in a decap tank. For me I'm thinking a combo that includes a bucket and paint strainer sac hung over the bucket to drain and then later squeeze and then leave out for bees to clean and last to run through the washing machine. The bucket decap shelf and the tool to hold one bucket to drain into another and tightly seal until a substantial amount of honey has been amassed. As plans go to have only 12 - 15 nests I may decap and extract by the frame rather than by the super.

Bought 1 of those gates last year. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to tighten it beings I don't have a hex wrench that big at home 🤠

Very true, they are a little challenging to figure out. I used a piece of furring strip. I stuck it inside the back to keep it from turning. I should make a video explain how I did it. Do you like the gate? I think they are very well made.

Jason Chrisman yes, very nice. I used a 7/8" (if my memory is correct) bolt and nut with a short piece of pipe on the bolt. Put the head of the bolt in the fitting and turned it with a crescent wrench on the nut inside my bucket. For anyone with a 3d printer, there's a wrench on Thingiverse.

William, I have never heard of that site until now or seen a wrench for those gates. That's awesome! I will have to do some research and see what it would cost to have one made. I like how this honey gate makes the user get creative to get it tight. I never thought to see if a bolt would fit but I don't stock anything that big either, good idea though! Thanks for sharing the site.

William, I reached out to my friend with the 3D printer and he checked the website for the specs. It takes 4 hours to print the wrench and the cost is about $.50, so he made me one. He is shipping it to me and I can't wait to see it. Now I am looking into 3D printers. lol

For PVC to go through a container (including 55gl type) I use a rubber grommet sold by Grainger web site. Specs are available for each size. I use them for an Aquaponic system so they are water tight.

You got 1 or 2 plastic queen excluders in the top ben??seems that 1 would let capping fall through to much..I made some like this about 10 years ago used clear sterlite from wally but put hardwire cloth 2 layers in cross pattern works fine but about half full it gets flimsy and never did like the ideal of hardwire and you can imagine clean up…

I used two totes from Sam's (like you would use to bus Tables) and a honey gate. Less than $20.00.

I got the grey one's from Lowe's but Wal-Mart carries them also. Lowe's actually carries a tote made by "Brute" that is super heavy duty but the cost is more than standard totes.

I like the #2 tank and I will try to find the totes to make one of those instead of paying close to $100. for one.

The honey super frames are smaller so we don't have to carry boxes that weigh 100 pounds. I've used full deep frames as a honey super a few times and it's no fun to carry very far.

The hobby industry is greedy. It always has been expensive. In college we joked about what we'd like to engineer. I always said "sporting goods" because they're overpriced as well. Look at some top of the line golf clubs or an Italian shotgun for example.
