Homemade Fluid extractor

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A homemade device to extract power steering fluid from the tank. This can also be used to extract other fluids such as brake fluid or hydraulic clutch fluid. It's made from an empty peanut butter jar & some vinyl tubing. It's easy to make and very effective!

    Hold the jar lower than the bottle that is being drained, you will find that once you start the flow it will continue without suction until either you raise the jar or the bottle is empty, sods law.

    It works great every time I've used it. Depending on how much oil you have to remove it may take a few rounds. As long as you can provide some form of vacuum on the "clean end" it will pull the oil no problem. What I didn't demo in the video was if you have one of those hand held "brake bleeding" vacuum pumps. Hook the pump to the clean end and pull the vacuum there while the other end is in the oil, that works great. If you don't have one of those pumps you can rent one from one of the auto parts store "loan-a-tool" programs. Take it back when you are done and get all your $$$ back. Thanks for checking out my video. Hope it work as well for you as it does for me :-). Have a great day!

    Dude, I know this is an old video but were you pinching off the line in between sucks? lol Because if you weren't then you don't have an air leak, it was just sucking in air back through the line after you let off the vacuum pressure. You have to keep it pinched off completely in order to maintain a vacuum.

  • @Homemadeidea

    @Homemadeidea

    10 жыл бұрын

    The clear or white silicone would work fine. Also engine RTV gasket sealants for engines would work. As for the PVC, I think of the blue stuff I use to glue the plastic water pipe together, I don't think that would work. I used the hot melt because it sets up fast as I was needing to get that car done. Otherwise I would have used some engine RTV gasket sealer. Harbor freight has a AC vacuum pump that runs on compressed air for 14 bucks i wonder how that creates the vacuum? might be worth the 14 bucks to find out. if its made to bring a AC system down to the proper vacuum then it should work.

  • @Homemadeidea

    @Homemadeidea

    +Ben Boudreau Buddy of mine has one of those. Never really thought about using it for anything other than AC work. May have to get one to experiment with it. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! Have a great day!

  • @mannys9130

    @mannys9130

    It works by passing the compressed air through a venturi. They're not adequate for AC work. AC systems need to be drawn down to almost perfect vacuum and held for 30 minutes to boil moisture out of the lines. That pump can't do that, and you'd need a humongous compressor tank to supply the air for a 30-45 minute vacuum cycle...

  • @Homemadeidea

    @Homemadeidea

    8 жыл бұрын

    I really haven't dealt with AC systems much. Slowly putting my 84 GT Mustang back together. I was gonna put the AC back in it this time. Found that my compressor had locked up. Sooo ..reckon I'll put the AC in when I score another compressor. As for an air compressor, I have a 5hp 2 stage 60 gallon Kobalt that has held up to anything I've thrown at it. Not sure how well it will work with the venturi vacuum pump. I've seen my dad and my buddy use the pump for AC work. It seemed to work OK. but possibly if it were pulled to a stronger vacuum it may have worked better?

  • @mannys9130

    @mannys9130

    8 жыл бұрын

    +HomemadeIdea The venturi pumps are not adequate for AC work. The purpose of vacuuming is to remove incondensable gases, and to boil off moisture that would cause acid formation within the system. As the vacuum gets stronger and stronger, the water boils and removes energy from the system, making the remaining water colder and harder to boil. That requires an even deeper vacuum to boil the now colder moisture in the lines. Actual proper procedure is to use a strong vacuum pump like a 2 stage unit, park the vehicle in the sun so heat can enter the system, vacuum for 45 minutes, fill with 150psi of dry Nitrogen and let it stand for 1 hour, if no leaks are found the system is vacuumed again for 45 minutes so the N2 is evacuated and any moisture that was freed by the N2 is removed, and then the system is charged with the proper weight of refrigerant gas and performance us verified by checking pressures and either superheat or subcooling calculations.

    An even simpler and easy method would have been to just use the laws of physics with gravity and just siphon the fluid out. All you would need then is your clear hose, any kind of catch container, and the knowledge of how to siphon fluids.

  • @Homemadeidea

    @Homemadeidea

    9 жыл бұрын

    Killer2600 Thanks for a great tip! Been siphoning fluids for a long time. The method I presented also works on differential fluids. Diff fluid doesn't siphon very fast. Also the vacuum force will pull almost every bit of anything left. Where siphoning, once an air bubble is introduced, the flow stops. Thanks for taking the time to leave a great tip!
