Homemade Fishing Seat Box - Part One - Building the Frame & Footplate
In the last video I demonstrated my new Homemade Fishing Seat Box, which is an updated version of boxes I have been building for around 30 years. The new Seat Box has all the benefits of modern boxes, but it is a lot lighter than many of those manufactured by professionals.
I recommend that viewers watch the demonstration video before viewing this one. Here is the link: • New Fishing Seat Box -...
In Part One of this series, I am providing viewers with an in depth look at exactly how I made the main frame, legs and footplate. To that end, I have provided below a number of items of information which should be useful in the event that anyone decides to make their own version of my Seat Box.

Please note that I have no formal training in either Woodwork or Metalwork. My knowledge comes from years of making seat boxes and the inevitable mistakes that entailed. Please also ensure that you make yourself aware of all the safety precautions which need to be adhered to when working with tools. There are many videos on KZread covering this.

    Thanks Adie. The beauty of this project is that it is adjustable to whatever suits the person making it. I have had one of my viewers make the box and use 3D Printed parts, which prompted me to buy a 3D Printer. I have now changed a lot of the accessories to 3D Printed versions myself.

    Another great vid. I have being mulling over why you need a plate on the bottom of the foot plate as all the pressure is on the bolt at the rear and then legs at the front? Plus it would allow a quicker return time when folding?

  • @FishingwithDen

    Hi Phillip. Thanks for your comments. I could have had additional bars across the footplate instead of a flat plate, but as with all things, it was just my personal preference. Not sure what you mean by a quicker return time though?

    @@FishingwithDen if the plate on the bottom was not there it could be lifted without the need to pull then lift. I know it is only a minor thing but I just have a bad habit of looking at ways to make things quicker. I am not always right mind? ;)

    @@Offcut55 Hi Phillip. I see what you are getting at now. In fact the existing Footplate could easily be built without the need to slide the mechanism in. It's just a question of hinging it at the pivot point. This was one of the points I researched in some depth on the Internet. There are some cheap universal Footplates out there that do exactly that, but it seems there is a danger of the thing folding up when you stand on it. The sliding mechanism is designed to provide a locked base to the complete unit to prevent that. That is why other boxes with the folding footplate use the sliding mechanism too. I too am not always right mind! Lol. Tight Lines.

    Hey Den. I am struggling to get 2mm 38 x 25. Do you think 1.6mm would do?

  • @FishingwithDen

    @FishingwithDen

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Mark. I always used to use 1.6mm on my previous boxes. I only bought the 2mm this time because that was what was available. Having said that, a lot depends on how much you weigh, so I can't guarantee that it will work and 2mm will be substantially stronger, but 1.6mm would have been what I would have tried if it had been available. Worst Case, you might get a failure of the main crossmembers, that would have a cost implication, but if you test it early on, at least you could then buy a thicker length for the main loadbearing members. Sorry I couldn't be of more help mate.

  • @FishingwithDen

    @FishingwithDen

    4 жыл бұрын

    I did a quick reckoning Graham. It came to about £175 if you had to buy everything. However, I had some items in my garage so it was less than that for me. An interesting point to note is that you have to buy the aluminium in 6.5 metre sections where I am, so if you built 2 boxes, the cost of the second box would be very much lower. In my case, I am going to use the spare aluminium to make side trays, a Pole Spray Bar, an adjustable Rod Rest, Keepnet Holders and a Trolley/Platform system for longer walks. These will all be almost free, so the project becomes less costly. I will be posting up videos on these items over the coming weeks.

  • @FishingwithDen

    @FishingwithDen

    Hi Callum. From your question above, I'm assuming you are only talking about the aluminium parts? There's not much I can think of for the aluminium frame other than some 3mm flat bar which I used to create the threaded parts which hold the outer legs together. There was also a 19mm x 19mm x 1.6mm square tube which separated the legs, but this was just from a piece I had left over from another project. The footplate was 1.6mm aluminium which I bought as an offcut from a very obliging seller. I assume you are talking to a proper supplier rather than buying from a DIY store, otherwise it will get very expensive. Having said that, if you just need a small piece of aluminium, the DIY store is a convenient place to go. I don't have a complete list of every item I used to make the box and accessories, but if you watch the videos, it will become clear what you need to buy. Unfortunately, I didn't have a complete shopping list from day one, but then a lot of what I decided to use only happened as I went along.
