Crabbing for Dungeons looks so simple but in practice, can be very technical. You have to understand how the tides affects the nets and crab, having the proper equipment, bait and depth all factor into your success.
I didn’t really get into offshore crabbing until last season and really struggled. After several mistakes, yesterdays haul paid off for all the hard work.
I went out with some good friends and launched out of Halfmoon Bay for our first crabbbng trip of the season. The weather was super nice and we started off in the 150’ depth. After a long soak with our crab nets, it yielded nothing.
We tried several other depths with nothing to show for. We finally tried the 120’ depth and started hauling in some gauge busters. Each crab net we pulled in yielded more and more and they got bigger! It was like hitting the jackpot. 😁
My homemade crab puller was a back saver. Last year we pulled everything by hand and you wear yourself out real quick. The crab puller made for a more enjoyable crabbing experience. If you’re planning on crabbing offshore, invest in an electric one or make one yourself.
We ended the day with a 4 man limit with several gauge busters. Filled up my live well almost to the brim. A great way to end the trip.
