It's 2023 and was skeptical of this DIY recipe but totally worked. In our case we used the tide, oxy clean powder, pine sol all purpose cleaner, and a few drops of dawn dish soap. We have 3 cats and some tough cat puke and pee stains to clean up and got them though we did have to hit some spots twice which we expected even with brand name stuff.

Great video, very informative. Something your viewers need to know ... if your carpet contains wool fibers, don't use the spot cleaner with peroxide -- it'll bleach out any colors; use Dawn and alcohol (1 c. alcohol, 2 c. water, 1tsp. Dawn), instead.

I used this on carpets and it worked as expected. I had put a gallon in a garden sprayer to pretreat all the stains. My mother who recently passed was a heavy smoker. I decided to try it out on the ceiling in her old bedroom. 5 years of 2 packs a day had a lot of nicotine stain. I sprayed it on and within seconds it was breaking up. I wiped it down and it left nothing but clean white ceiling and the smell is so much better. It only took about 10 minutes to clean it all. I'll probably go over it a few more times just to make sure I got as much as I can.

I have the Hoover power scrub deluxe which has two compartments one for the solution and one for plain water. I use ALL with oxi laundry detergent to mix my solution and add 1/3 cup Pet Stain remover that contains enzymes. In the clear water side I add 5-8 oz Odoban. I use the cucumber melon or the linen scent and they both work great! It's a pain to have to go over the same area to rinse but once I finally started to rinse my carpet after shampooing it really did make a difference and helps keep new dirt from sticking as much. The Hoover I have has a knob to easily switch back and forth from washing and rinsing so I wash and rinse the same section as I clean. It's still a pain (IMO) but saves me the hassle of having to come back once I'm done shampooing and having to go over the whole area again to rinse.

Off white carpet here, I could not believe how dirty this carpet really was until I brought a job site light into the room to give a proper inspection, as the room is rather dark. WOW! I had just enough Rug Doctor to make a pass or two, so here I am. I did add some Folex carpet cleaner to the mix, 2oz, and pre-spotted with it too. Holy Smokes Batman! This stuff works! I can make many more gallons, I think I spent around $7 for all of the ingredients, less the Folex, which I had to purchase at Target for another $7. $14 all in, I am not complaining. Thank you for the video! Going to let her dry a bit and do another pass!

I definitely want to try this!! I saw a video of a guy that had a DIY solution for Deep cleaning his car seats/rug and I thought it was awesome. For all those who cant get the LA Totally Awesome, Im curious if they can actually prepare a Baking soda sprinkle on the carpet first, then use a vinegar spray AFTER rubbing the baking soda into the fibers and in between the fibers.(I use that for cleaning when my dog vomited) Then you can use Steves solution - (substitute Oxyclean for the LAs Totally Awesome) and just prepare the rest of Steves solution minus the LA(powder) and LA cleaning solution. Im assuming the Baking soda and Vinegar will do what the LA products would do (only you have to add it to the floor first and allow he vinegar/baking soda mix to sit for at least 15minuts because using the rest of Steves solution. Great work! Im so eager to try it!!

I used to clean carpets commercially and one of our sales pitches was we did not use any detergent which leaves a residue which will clean your shoe soles or feet. We used a softening agent which was very effective then finished off with a spot guard spray. Your formula uses a very small amount of detergent, however.

You're correct about it using a very small amount of detergent. We do recommend thorough rinsing and blotting. We also recommend using plain water first and only using this solution if the stain won't come out with water. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Does this recipe make a gallon of concentrated solution (to be added with more water into the reservoir)? I’m using a compact Hoover shampooer and if I use the Hoover brand solution, the instructions say to fill with 1 gal warm water and only an ounce or so of solution. I tried this DIY version and I’m still rinsing with plain water multiple times, but the carpet is still stiff when dry. There still seems to be a lot of soap in the carpet after multiple passes with plain water. Doesn’t seem like anyone else in the comments is having this issue. It was a little better when I cut the laundry detergent amount by half.
