Homelessness in Canada: Toronto man fears shelter system but can’t get help without it

Peter Necheff was born and grew up in Corktown, raised by his parents to be kind.
He worked as a shoeshine boy, then sold newspapers and took on his first full-time job at 15 years old.
“I’m a Toronto boy,” said the 61-year-old.
Twelve years ago, Necheff damaged his heart and his kidneys by taking too much Ibuprofen as he struggled to handle the pain from work injuries. His cardiologist told him he’d have to reduce how much he worked, something he struggled to do.
Then, three months ago, the housing set-up with a roommate who had been with him through the pandemic fell apart, and he found himself without a home.
Sean O'Shea reports.

We are a 6 figure income couple and had very little saved and not much cash lying around the preverbal". '...don't have $500 for an emergency" that was us. The big thing was debt all kinds of it, cars mortgage (although our home isn't a high price one), student loans for our kids, and of course credit cards. One day we just got sick of being broke and went total scorched earth and became frugal overnight. Paid it all off, it took almost 5 years but now we have no debt and this year our savings rate is 50% on basically the same income that had us perpetually broke. So for us it is mainly staying out of debt and watching our spending, at first it was a real effort to save in our HISA and 401Ks but now it's actually fun watching our money grow. No car or vacation or neighborhood is worth being broke or financially unstable.

I woke up this morning weighing the idea of going downtown to inquire about living in a shelter. Where I presently live I am scared to open the door, answer the phone or just walk down the hallway to go to the bus stop. It's not so much the residents that point out a rip in a pair of work jeans or the need for a haircut, as it is the yelling, intimidation and 'dirty looks' by the management and staff. It's nerve racking to fear the violent pounding on the door and to have the landlords walk into your place and scold you that you are on "private property", or have them call you on the phone claiming they are conducting an "investigation". People make mistakes yet incidents that are but misdemeanor violations by nature are construed as felonious. The sign out front on the boulevard says that it's "A great place to call home", but I just can't bring myself to use that word "home". There are so many people that have master keys to my door. I have looked into moving, but seemingly, prospective landlords don't want anyone over 60. It's not so much the fear of falling through the cracks as it is being pushed.

The issue arises where we can build. We ran into a problem on the 70s and 80s when building was basically unregulated (ergo why houses were so affordable) but we kept building on farmland and experts predicted that if such building continued we would have to import the majority of our food which would drastically increase the cost of food ergo all the red tape in building projects. We only have so much viable farmland in Canada despite such a large landmass so it's really a pick your poison. With such dramatic increases of immigration were running into a housing crisis, if we build like we did on the 80s houses will be cheaper but we'll see a food crisis.

@@elena2125 we are going to be in for a big surprise if he doesn't come through with all of those promises. But I have seen it time after time that a politician will say and do anything to get elected. But now it's worse. Now it's minority politician who have to get elected. Representation is very important , so they say. You must have a member of every minority groups and for what. We had several women premier's in Canada and Canada is no better now than before. Electing someone because of what they look like is taking us is the wrong direction. Every politician who wants to run for public office must be fluent in English , be a third generation citizens and go through a job interview like everyone else. Voting for a woman because we need equal opportunity or representation is not in the best interest of the people. Look at the mayor's of Calgary and Edmonton both haven't mastered the English language and I wonder if they voted NDP for jagmeet . Look elections are very important but we have no idea who these people are. Kristy Clark of BC premier was a talk show host. Bonnie Crombie of the liberals of Ontario looks and sounds like a party girl. We need people of background. Look at leslyn Lewis of Ontario when she ran for the CPC she has background of being serious about the people of Canada even if she wasn't born in Canada which is a must to be a politician or even a realtor. If PP let's us down I am going to be the first in line in the hanging party if they still have those things.

Too bad that shelters attract drug addiction, desperate thieves, and bed bugs. That makes it impossible for sober people to find peace when they’re financially down. Maybe a support system for car camping would help some people find temporary shelter and personal space away from these shelters. Example: offer parking lots for overnight sleeping with plug-in electric heaters and a team to help build comfortable beds in vehicles.

Everyone has been brainwashed by the Gov't that if you spent your life in Canada and end up disabled and/or homeless it's 100 % your fault and you should suffer. This is not true and it is the real hate crime happening these days. Canadians beleive and vote for giving the lottery $ of funding and instant gov't housing to new immigrants that have never done a thing for Canada and never paid a cent of tax either. This corruptive hateful thinking is what has destroyed our country. Update for high income people you will never enjoy anything anywhere when almost 300 000 Canadians are homeless and living everywhere in tents and roaming the streets. You can't have people arrested because we don't have enough prisons/jails and you are going to have to reap the consquences with the brainwash hate mentioned above that you beleive. I've experienced living in Toronto shelters, including Seton House, colloquially known in the community as 'Satan House.' However, the perception of how terrible the shelter system is couldn't be further from the truth. The shelter system provides a valuable opportunity for individuals to rehabilitate off the streets, offering access to mental health care and potentially a secure home in the future. The primary deterrent for some is the prohibition of drug and alcohol use on-site. Regrettably, this restriction leads people to avoid shelters. Mischaracterizing the shelter system as inherently bad can be detrimental, especially for those struggling with mental illness, as it may discourage them from seeking help and lead to tragic outcomes on the streets.

If you are a Canadian resident/citizen and have worked your whole life here paying taxes and contributing to the country you can end up homeless like this man and the other 275 000 homeless and have to wait more than 10 years to get gov't subsidized housing, much less monthly funding on benefits. No programs available for you just food banks that run ouf of food with long lines and shelters that are full of violence, theft and drugs and disease. Canada loves new immigrants only but completely neglects and discriminates against their own people. This is no secret to anyone in Canada and even around the world that's why so many people come here to scam our healthcare and education system and then leave. Canadians have been brainwashed into hating their own people and this is the consequences. Homeless people dying in tents in all kinds of weather everywhere in the country. 275 000 !!!

Then other use of my $$ would be buy a country home lots of land and adopt all the elderly dogs that nobody wants at the shelters, to live the rest of thier days at peace instead of a cage.

But no one is talking about how quickly the African/Carribean and Iranian people come into shelters and gets permanently housed within 3-12 months. Probably the new modular homes too! These two groups break all the shelter rules and get away with it. Most of the workers are African too. Specifically Nigerian. There is a systemic issue here. The City is not doing anything. Why do these two groups come from their respective countries and have never paid a dime in taxes get priority status. Not to mention they get on OW and even ODSP and get more money here in Canada than they ever had back home. It’s no wonder they brag about it to their people.

That's the discrimination no one talks about. New immigrants get instant priority access to Gov't housing when they arrive. They don't spend a sinlge night on the streets like where disabled Canadians live. Refugees also get $5700 per month and even if only for a year they still get all that money to get nice cars and better jobs and opportunities. disabled Canadians get barely any money so they can never get ahead and they just suffer and die slowly over time and end up homeless like this man here.
