Homeless shepherd shares hunter-gatherer diet & survival tips
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
For more than a decade, Aaron Fletcher has lived as a nomadic shepherd, mostly out of a micro-camper pulled by his sheep. He supports himself as an itinerant farmhand through work trading, bartering his sheep’s milk for food and supplies. He also skill-shares in exchange for food, “including wool felting, wool spinning, cheesemaking, survival, bushcraft, etc.”
Watch the other two stories with Aaron Fletcher's:
- Part I: On Guerrilla Grazing around Southern Oregon • Went homeless. Done Gu...
- Part III: Radical simplicity & autarky on a solo wagon micro-farm • Homeless shepherd star...
He considers himself a herder-gatherer and his diet consists of a lot of milk and cheese (courtesy of his sheep), as well as foraged foods (wild greens, seeds, and even ingredients to make his own toothpaste) and some traded meat, potatoes, and citrus (especially after learning he was deficient in Vitamin C).
He’s lived in apartments and conventional homes, and he was about to purchase a home before deciding to go nomadic a dozen years ago. He now lives all year, even during the snowy Oregon winter, in his tiny sheep cart that is fitted out with a bed, folding table, solar freezer, wood-burning stove, and solar cooker.
He defines himself as “homefree” or “the opposite of being homeless... it’s also the opposite of being housed, it’s like the third side of a coin. There have always been the haves, and the have-nots (possessions), but homefree means being a have-not-want”. Fletcher sees his sheep-pulled as the ideal-sized home: more equipped than living off pack boxes, but less cluttered than a traditional house.

The value of this video is that without it I wouldn’t ever even imagine that someone was doing this. I feel like I’ve been really caught up and maybe feeling a little trapped in the system. It’s so refreshing to see this guy demonstrating that life isn’t limited to the lanes that are painted by other people.

He's such a chill and intelligent person I loved watching him! I will define tiles take some advices from this video for my life. Please consider visiting him again and tell us more about his story.
This man is Living a Simple Life and giving a message of not needing so much materialistic things to be happy, what a wonderful message. Happiness is something you create for yourself.

@@Here_Today_ againn I agree. But I find comments that say stuff like "most people ...." difficult as we all only judge based on our small perceptive bubble of reality. I'd argue that at least a few years ago most people on this world lived pretty similar and actively chose to aquire more "wealth". Turning your back on "conventional" life is a privilege of the western culture he lives in wich is not the dominant culture on the world.

Love this guys attitude. Everything is awesomee!
I'm a little jealous of his healthy happy outdoor life. He really is more free than most.
Another visit with Aaron and his sheepies. 🏃♂️🐏🐑🐑🐑 One of your best guests. Thanks for the update.

@@XylonPH yeah I remember too I saw this guy. I hope he's doing well🙏
Good to see he is still living his dream! Seen him on a show a few years back.
I've been following this guy on YT for a few years now. He's the reason why we finally gave up our apartment last month and live in the van we already live in for about 4 mounths now.
If the apocalypse happens, I need him on my team. He is such an inspiration!
This guy has it all worked out! Love the way the sheep trust him enough to submit to shearing. He’s dead right about bigger houses. I’m overwhelmed by stuff I have but don’t need. And the never ending maintenance. I could listen to his humble but wise talk all day. He’s a very evolved person.

I often fantasize about having a small house surrounded by land to have some animals for meat and dairy products. We live in a much larger house than I grew up in and I’m so sick of maintaining it.
He is truly blessed . He has so much love to share with everybody
This guy is the most fascinating person I've seen in a while. He really knows what he is doing, and his ideas are great. He could design the perfect carts for campers who want to be carbon zero, or those choosing a life "living rough". I love how sweet he is to his sheep. Also, I bet the sheep's milk pops are amazing. Safe Journeys, my friend!
Man, so much to learn from him and his view of life. Much respect.
Such respect for his sheep.
"Reduce the amount of responsibility" - these are the key words. People tend to live in homes, make children and take other responsibilities to extend life. I think that life is a bit tough sometimes for this guy. But on the other hand , people take resposibilities and spend their lives fulfilling them, having only several hours a day to enjoy life, so living his life is an idea worth considering for some.

I live out in the country and I have a ton of responsibilities: -Tending the garden -Taking care of my chickens -Taking my beautiful dog for a walk or a run -Helping my neighbors in any way they might need me -Teaching martial arts to kids/women in my village (getting everyone stronger and less vulnerable) -Tons of little things to do around the house (cording wood, splitting wood, cutting the grass, planting blueberries patches...) I took many survival courses with the natives here (living in Quebec) and taking responsibilities is only what they're talking about. "If you're not dealing with bad weather, you should be preparing to deal with bad weather..." It's MEANINGLESS responsibilities that are killing us. Like doing some stupid work on the computer for a big multinational. Those are empty. But responsibilities are the meaning of life, very much so.

@@fl260 but do you rely only on goods you can produce? What is the source of your wealth? Martial arts teaching is no more productive fow wealth of your community than the work of average Joe for big multinational.

@@escapetherace1943 No way! Nomadic people like himself will outlast all the city folk by a longshot. He is healthy and fit and mentally strong, people from the city's won't last longer then a few days considering all their skills they have developed throughout their life and worthless in such a situation. @@tomw6947 yes but in that kind of scenario pillaging and raiding become a thing, usually in armed groups, and fast. He's not nomadic in the sense that he's deepwoods rural, and the area he's in has a huge population. The real people who will survive the longest in those situations, hypothetically, are those who can hunker down and live off supplies in a secure, monitored area, or those underground. Ideally you would network with those similarly minded and with your neighbors to have plans in place, because teamwork is a much better strategy to survive, that guy someone might raid may be the same guy who knows deep farming skills and can effectively grow you healthy crops and avoid crop disease while doing so, or he may have real medical skills, you just don't know. People need to not panic and come together in those kinds of situations.

Realistically I doubt it. He demonstrates a barter and service life style but he’s not that self sustaining especially when he mentioned food and lack of vitamin C and lives between rural and suburban areas. He could have survival skills beyond this but so far I don’t really think so.
