My dad was homeless when he was young, he lived under an pier and worked two jobs until he was able to afford a flat. it was doable then... he didn't need to provide a phone number with an email address, a this and a that... there were no mobile phones then... and he was given cash in hand work. It was doable than to be homeless and find some cash in hand jobs. You'd ask for the work and all they ask is for you to turn up, no paperwork required, which I know is not legal, but now it's made so difficult for the homeless to find work

He's a dick. Take it from somebody who survived on the benefit system for a long time. The only times I was "left out to dry" by the council or benefit system, was when I hadn't complied with their rules. And that's what a majority of these cases are. I've sat with soooooo many homeless. And all they can do is think "poor me", when in reality. They're causing their own situations by not following simple instructions.

@@Go-go-super-guru u wrong wrong wrong...I was homeless 10yrs total I was mentally I'll slipped through the net and for 3years I'd had not a penny off anyone not begged or sold myself but I became alcohol dependent. experienced some trauma and was vulnerable even got pneumonia n nearly died. There at sum point was poor me but survival kicks in and sometimes only way to cope is to abuse drugs drink, just to go to sleep is luxury cos ppl at risk n being hurt/attacked by ppl after a nite out or just to av a laugh has become sadly "expected" living in that bleak existence , belief is hard to muster wen u cold n wet n hungry! ps I'm now getting better I'm 16months sober got a flat n my health isn't great but volunteer at a soup kitchen wen I can.judgement isn't helpful it's just puts ppl down more it's unfair.

I live in Manchester, I used to really feel for the homeless, I still do some of them but I changed a lot of my views after I was living near the salutation army stop house, they turned our estate into a scumpit filled with dealers attacking old people, screaming down the street all night waking up kids, leaving needles in people's gardens for kids to find, shitting in everyone's gardens, it's easy when you're far away to feel empathy for them, it's only human but when you have to live besides them you realise the havok they cause and actually how little they care about anyone but themselves, I hope they all get clean and sorted but I know most of them don't care for that or anything else really.

seems like some people struggle to understand the mental trauma that comes with being homeless. Ending homelessness is more than just getting a job, it will take a long time to mentally adjust to stability, structure, and the slew of things people who have never been homeless can easily just get on with. This trauma means that oftentimes homelessness becomes a vicious cycle.

The homeless guy is actually really bright and deserves a job in some type of protest/persuasive job.

To the people bashing on the homeless (and making it seem is their fault they don't just get a job and a home) It's easy to ignore the mental and emotional state many homeless people are in. If someone has broken limbs no one asks him why he can't work but mental deceases can't unfortunately be seen. It's extremely demoralizing to be without a home/ income/ healthy family support...If you were not depressed before losing everything you have a very high chance to be after. Drug abuse is rampant with people on the streets because often that's the only way they find to cope. It's hard to move forward when the sun doesn't shine.

I always thought I would want to visit the main city, Manila, but thank god my parents were born and raised in the rural countryside. Actually, earlier this month, on a Tuesday, I went to the movies to watch 2 movies and walked by what I assume was a man "sleeping rough" on a bench outside the Outback Steakhouse. It was raining and after the second movie, I went back to my car and found that I lost my keys and my cell phone went dead. I was there sitting on a bench at 1am. It started to rain harder and was going to sit down on the Outback Bench, but couldn't because it was occupied by the guy sleeping rough. I decided to get out of the rain and walked from the theater to the bus stop to get out of the rain. I was miserable and had to sit there for a few hours. During that time I had again realized how good I had it, and that I couldn't complain. I knew I had a house to go to, where my next meal was coming from and had the option of deciding what I would eat when I got home. It turned out the keys were turned in to the box office. It probably dropped out of my pants pocket while pulling out my smuggled-in can of coke and bag of gummy bears.

​@John Brighton I do agree that people who are physically & emotionally healthy able should be forced to work. If you are just on jobseekers & deliberately ruining interviews or only going after jobs you have no qualifications for, you should be forced to volunteer or work a labouring job. However I do not approve of cutting benefits of elderly & actually severely disabled people. The new standard that if you can walk 20m then that means you are not disabled is ridiculous. There should be levels & those who need a bit of help walking or with sight etc should get a bit of money or if the government want to pay directly for their taxi or whatever fine. If a taxi enabled a guy with cerebral palsy to get to & from work without being too knackered to do his job, we should be commending his work ethic, not cutting his taxi money. They should focus on the people who are lying & choosing not to work, not disabled people who are really struggling. There are more people on benefits due to poor parenting, lack of guidance, no youth clubs etc & social services not telling the parents how to parents better & then following up. Like take your kids to the park for free rather than letting them get wound up staying inside while you sit on your backside watching TV for 12 hours a day. Poorly parented kids have more kids they poorly parents I don't know why the government isn't focusing on that large demographic rather than cutting care for the elderly & disabled.

Well not according to his brother,or his mum, if he that keen rather than spend his begged money he could pay to stay in a hostel, the amount he had in his hands could easily pay for food ,board and saves money,he wants government money to pay for drugs ,he said it himself it is not his divine right to be looked after,bad choices he makes ,tuff I dont care one shit about him or his blanket friends ,I have been on the bread line with no money to spare and two kids.i put all my mo ey on my kids food and clothes and warm house,did without for myself,hand me down clothes,cheaper food for me,used my brain,survival can be achieved in many different forms,that bloke teeth disgusting through smoking.i managed to get a business going that my chance to work,he says he not want to be told what to do,he could of started his business and none dictates to him,and no it doesn't cost money to set up a business I did it for £200, he makes more than that in two days,he a low life wouldnt waste my piss on him,

I grew up on a council estate in south London from the 1960s up until the late 1980s. I can honestly say we had more opportunities then these kids. Still hard but there was more of a family structure. Most of our parents were together for good or bad. This was sad to see.

Nowadays its either your parents are split ir they’re still together and fighting all the time. For me its like that anyway. Loads of my mates dont have dads and shit and then they go and get into trouble. My parents are still together atleast, but they fight loads especially around Christmas and shit. Times are hard mate. All these kids without a mum or a dad spending time out on the streets and getting into trouble.

They need love, like love from a family, and sense of self-worth, and something to look forward to, like a purpose in life. If they do, it is less likely they would turn to drugs. Many homeless told me they drink because they want to forget their pain and despair. This is the best way for them to get numbed even if momentarily.

The guy got 4 separate 2 year sentences but he’s allowed to serve them all at the same time and if he behaves his time is cut in half. So sentenced to 8 years and serves 1, the justice system and maths don’t mix well by the look of it.

Plus mate after paying into the system for over 40 yrs DWP have just informed me that I will not receive my state pension until I am 67yrs and 9 months old and not 65 so instead of it being 4 yrs away it’s now 6 yrs 9 months

It's often a catalogue of things which happen at the wrong times in their lives and even though they can be small things that go wrong, when it continues and you cant always come back from it, you can, through no fault of your own, become unemployed and/or homeless. For the first time, we are seeing people becoming homeless at much later stages of their lives. People who are middle/upper middle classes are now becoming homeless and are on the streets. Something is very wrong with this country and no one seems to care. Well no one in the government anyway. Sadly it's only gonna get worse now universal credit is getting rolled out......

I’m from the south and I remember going to Manchester for a friends birthday. We were walking to the local and I was wondering why there were so many fabric sheets and covers on the floor. I couldn’t believe it when I found out they were people sleeping. Hundreds of them across the city centre. Obviously this desperation exists everywhere but I’ve never seen it quite like I saw it in Manchester.

We definitely need more information and awareness about how benefits cut due to ONE apointment being missed. For an example they can cancel 3 times but they miss ONE appointment and it's just gone with no way of making it easy to get help any time soon.

I am upset by Chris. I worked in a Manchester city centre bar that sold cheap pints .Chris came in now and again. One day he came in all perky and ordered several pints of Strongbow because he had found £60 on the streets. This homeless man tipped me a quid each time he bought a pint. Fast forward a week and I saw him selling the Big Issue and I could not buy one as I never carry cash ( seldom had any ) and only took home £180 a week from my bar job and rent came first . I saw the slight expectation in his eyes that I would buy The Big Issue but I couldn't . It was embarrassing . Hope he is ok.

Ohh man.. this is beyond sad. Everyone just wants to brush them under the carpet like they are dirt. It's so sickenning.

I lived in Manchester City centre for two years, moved away a year ago. Most of them don't want the accommodation when the housing officers come around to give them temp accommodation until they get a council house. They make more money on the streets from tourists and used to piss on our doorstep. We moved as just as spice was becoming a big problem.

Man this is heart breaking. I think it's so wrong to criminalize the homeless; not allowing them to squat and putting down spikes to prevent them from sleeping on the streets. Unless the authorities are going to help move them to somewhere better, they shouldn't be going out of their way to make their situation worse. It's not like anyone is using the abandoned buildings or the benches/pavements in the middle of the night so they're not even causing inconvenience. The world belongs to everyone, we share the streets with each other - so why does anyone have the right to stop others such as the homeless utilizing it? It's literally all they have; I'm sure it's not as hard to just tolerate a makeshift bed on the pavement or allow squatters to stay in an empty building than it is for *them* to suffer while finding shelter. Thank you BBC 3 for making this documentary and the others like it. It is really important.

I’m at the moment studying in Norwich. Was shocked at first to see how many homeless there were. I was also alarmed how rude and aggressive they are. I’ve been shouted at, told it’s ok for you and your warm bed and sworn at. I have also been there when they’ve been offered a place, only to be told they didn’t want to go as they could not carry on drinking. Only so much you can do for someone. They need to help themselves as well

'Raising 5 boys is hard' as they all sit in a room together doing drugs and drinking, well done

Some people are genuinely struggling. But others receive benefits and play the system. I feel sorry for the genuine people but not for the ones who do have support and due to their cba attitude and the fact they are lazy and choose to put drugs or alcohol into their bodies because they just don't want to work. Others take drugs because something bad has happened and haven't had the appropriate treatment or support to help them.

They are trespassing on private property. Man if they spent less on smoking God knows what and drinking and maybe even got a job they could rent somewhere!!?? PARACITES!!!

Is there no government agency or charity that helps homeless people in the UK? There are 320,000 homeless in Britain.

The British government does help homeless people. If you become homeless in the UK, you should either go to your local council, or your local Shelter office. There's a housing charity called Shelter and the government houses people in hostels, supported accomodation, council houses, housing associations, and private rental market, through a benefit called Housing Benefit where the government pays your rent because you're on a low income.

The cornwrhouse used to be such a great place for art college students to hang out The art work the cafe and the films It was such a cultural place to hang with friends That's how I left It there

They go on about all the working class coming together as a community and helping each other and fighting back but they all rob, kill and hurt each other

Their is a difference between taking care/helping and enabling. I guarantee those boys are still there, still jobless, and still not doing shit to improve their situation.

These men has healthy body, why they can’t find decent job to support their own💪

It’s so sad and it makes me feel like I should go back and give the homeless people I’ve seen like water and food because like it’ll be so hard for them to get themselves together

Give them food, water, any spare change you have. Remember that most public toilets you now have to pay for. Most homeless people in the street want a safe place like a hostel to go to having enough money for just one night in a warm bed will keep them holding on a little longer.

I see they have all the things for a trek. I am so jealous. I would have gone out for trek if I had all those things such as sleeping bag, rucksack, tent. Man, these things are costly at least in my country.

No, it was just some guy wearing a hat. Come to think of it, Kevin Federline is just some guy wearing a hat.

The best solution if you are homeless is to get a mountain bike and build a parcel delivery trailer from scrap and deliver flowers, food, parcels etc.

When you have little support or savings, it doesn't take much to go wrong and lose your home and job. Every time we get a Conservative government all funding for youth clubs, family support and free local community parks are gone. These are the first line for prevention of poor parenting and teaching kids right from wrong and that someone cares. Without this many small problems escalate and people fall out of society.

Being homeless and living on the streets must be incredibly hard, and in winter even worse. Can you imagine it in winter in the uk sleeping in an alleyway ? I do try and have empathy for people, that being said i feel that some people cant cope in a flat or bedsit when they have one, they cant cope paying bills that you have to pay like rent or electric etc, for whatever reason, mental health problems or being anti social they cant cope with the responsibility of paying the bills from their benefits that they must do, and as such they get evicted and end up on the streets. I have lived in a rough flat and claimed unemployment benefits and scraped by but i survived and paid the bills i had to. Although its not a black and white case because i didnt have the terrible upbringing that i imagine some of these homeless people have had. I do think though that living in a bedsit even if it isnt very nice has got to be better than sleeping on the street ? Perhaps some of these guys can go to their local council or housing association to apply for a flat or at least advice on getting a private bedsit if they explain they are sleeping on the street etc ?

You can buy a phone in Asda. To get photo ID you need a counter signature from a professional, who the fucks going to vouch for any of these people. Also a phone can help you phone others when in trouble, what good is photo ID to someone who has no money?

At the end, it all comes down to the education system and competition which is increasing because well-educated people are migrating to western countries which these countries lack.
