He didn't earned his high position in the company by being a good manager. He didn't earned the glory of Best Superhero by actually being a good guy. He is not even qualified to work as one - as we can see in the scene where he lasered plane's control panel. Etc, etc. No high morals, no skills, no real great deeds. But he gets the rewards. Like a spoiled kid. But - I think - they feel hollow to him.
