    same, I fallen in love with Winston in a heartbeat 🥰 I'd like to add my 2 cents about slippery floors/stairs: if you own a big size dog, especially a molossoid, you really need the extra care in that department. those breeds tend to have very delicate joints, and a home accident is a risk you want to avoid at all cost... trust me, my Astro had a TPLO (knee reconstructive surgery) when he was 8yo, and that was no fun at all... lots of love from Firenze 😘

    About the flooring - I'd like to add that it's equally important to be mindful about that for the dog's joints! A more slippery floor will cause a dog's paws to glide and slide which puts extra pressure on their joints because they now have to parry the movement of that on top of carrying the weight of the animal. If the dog already has any tendencies to dysplasia or other problems with it's joints this just puts a huge extra strain on that. 😞 And having long claws makes it harder for the dog to get a good grip on the floor (friction), so they slip much easier, slide further apart with their legs and so on and so forth. I had to say goodbye to my baby girl before she was even two years of age due to hip dysplasia and arthritic build up on the knees. So this is a lesson I learned the hard way, and don't want anyone else to have to go through! 💞

    My current dog will (🙏) be 15 this June and he has IVDD, I put rugs wherever I can to make it easier on him and his back! You, obviously, have to place one of those anti-slip mats underneath all of the rugs and be very meticulous about making sure it covers the whole rug! Bonus about the rugs: they catch a lot of the sand/gravel/whatever it is that dogs always seem to bring back in with them no matter how carefully you towel their paws when you come in! 🤣

    Also about the fencing. If there is not a fence make sure that you are allowed to put up a fence and if there is restrictions on what kind of fence you can have. Where I live that is a big deal because some areas you can’t have fences or you can only have hip high decorative metal fence. Which isn’t good if your fur baby is a high jumper.

    A wonderful bullmastiff breeder told me do not allow large boned dogs to traverse stairs or jump in and out of high cars. She said it’s very bad for them….so Winston was smart not to go up and down the stairs. Unfortunately it’s why I don’t have a giant breed as much as I want one.

  • @bimgorling2036

    @bimgorling2036

    This! This actually goes for all dogs of all sizes, walking down stairs isn't even good for the joints of us humans either but for dogs it's an even more unnatural motion 🫤 I have had dogs of all sizes, my current boy is a miniature dachshund/miniature pinscher mix (so about 28 cm in height and 6-8 kg weight), he's almost 15 now and I've always been very mindful of him in stairs (fortunately he's easier to carry than Winston 🤣), but I never knew that jumping up on things also was bad for him... 😞 Whenever he was hesitant about jumping up on something I'd always be like "come on! I know you can do it, you've done it before, don't be so lazy". Now he has IVDD and I wish so, so much I could go back in time and make myself build him ramps from day 1 and not when he first started having issues 2,5 yrs ago. And if definitely make myself do a lot more proactive training and muscle building on his back and especially the back part of his body. But I guess you just can't know what you don't know yet, next time I'll be know better and do better! ❤️

    Another important factor for us was to have a door to the backyard that was suitable for installing a dog door so the dogs could go in and out when they wanted while we were at work. I know there are in-wall ones but it seems like the installation hassle factor would potentially be many times greater than a pet door in a door. I saw a company that claims their XL door is suitable for a mastiff but the opening is only 15.75" wide by 23.625" - is that big enough for Winston?

  • @theemanfamily

    @theemanfamily

    Would’ve been a great idea! But no, it would not be big enough for Winston because he’s about 31 inches at the withers and not to mention he is so bad at going through tiny spaces. He literally does not like anything that will touch him if he walks through it 😂😂😂 like sometimes our baby gates will touch him by accident and he would get so scared! Poor thing.

    @@garyfreeman896 oh my gosh, it's like you know our lives personally. he had literally just gotten his nails cut by the groomers two weeks prior and, just in the interest of educating some viewers who don't like to Google, the American Kennel Club's standards for weight for male English Mastiffs ranges from 160-230 pounds, making our dog well within that range (if you can do math). By the way, don't come for Girl with the Dogs, she has never once said our beached whale was overweight. Thanks for your support!
