My theory is Richard killed his wife and he was a serial killer killing all his girlfriends himself (we have seen that in one scene lucia came to her and said i am here to check you are alright )he was askin kids to reply from nina's phone forcefully He was kinda controlling kids at every point and making them do all the stuff like Forcefully marriage was also made up by him As that duck scene clarify it that he was makin kids to do things forcefully then a point came when kids got frustrated with all that stuff and started doing their own things but Richard punished them by torturing but still somehow lucia got courage and killed him and at last they told holly the truth that their father is serial killer and killed every of his gf including their mom

There is a point in my mind. every girl is being vanished , at some point kids think, their father can doubt them. So they just create a drama of marriage to convince their father that they have no problem with holly.

Basically this movie is a plot which shows parents ka behaviour bcho pe kya asar daalta h sath he mental health ki importance kya hoti hai. This theory looks more realistic to me your opinion may differ from mine no offense at all! 😊😊

They know that Holly will have to report everything and so that fear of being taken out of their home seals Holly's fate. Richard is obviously unbalanced and oblivious. Also probably an abusive parent as shown with his interrogation techniques. The ending, when Holly is told "it's time", means her time to die. On the mom's cell phone, the same 2 words were in text, from one kid to another, one on his/her phone, and one replying on the mom's phone to make it seem as if she was still alive. Until Holly puts 2 and 2 together and realizes that whatever happened there the kids did it.

(MY THEORY)Your assumption is great and most meaningful but I have some different perspective I could happen that Richard killed his own wife and his children know that. Now Richard was feeling so alone without Nina and feeling very guilty .That may impect on his metal health so he hide her dead body in that room and take her phone ,set whatsapp to auto sent the message so he can pretend she is alive however his metal health was not well. Now the three children stay quiet after the death 💀 of nina and their metal health also get sick. When holly came to the house everyone except then Richard wants wants to kill her,( the three children ) the childrens were so disturb due to the 💀 of their mother that they wants to bring Nina back maybe this is reason why Richard let the body in that room instead of burry it . They must trying to do some satanic retual and when holly found Nina ' s phone Richard act like that and start torture them however they know that where is nina . When the three children try to set up a marriage stay were simply going around their plan that's why Richard says 'I do' that's my theory
