Last month, my Mimi started a fire by smoking with her oxygen in. She called me into the living room and I, unaware of what was happening, walked in on the most horrific scene. I had to put her out and then the shelf next to her by running back and forth with cups of water from the sink. It could have been so much worse, but she's doing remarkably well. She's in another state having surgery now. She was home for about a week, during which she never smoked with her oxygen on, she always turned it off and/or went outside. One day she even only smoked 2 cigarettes as opposed to the usual pack. I'm happy she's finally making an effort to smoke less, but i hate it had to come at the cost of such a horrible event. Please don't do this to your families. I know smoking is an addiction and you can't just stop doing it, especially if you're an older person and you've been doing it since your youth. But please be smart about where, when and how you smoke. We got very lucky. A year ago at the time of this incident, i would have been at school and no one would have been home to stop the fire.

my mama smokes like a freight train and is on O2. Pure selfishness and she won't listen to the dangers. she has copd, emphysema and can barely breathe. She cares for Noone if you ask me.

I just told hospice aboyt my dad smoking pot while on oxygen. He has way advanced copd. I live in the same house and was worried about fire. They almost throw him off of hospice and came really close to coming and taking awsy all the oxygen equipment. They made him sign a contract.

Excellent demonstration. The comments are correct however. O2 is not flammable like propane for example. O2 is combustible. Or more specifically, aids in combustion, significantly.

the oxygen does not ignite- looking at the video the plastic tubing ignited

My Uncle Wayne just died due to this. Forgot about his nasal cannula. Burnt himself from head to toe. His funeral is next week.

Can you smoke if the oxygen concentrators are inactive?

Err...Oxygen IS NOT flammable! It supports and accelerates combustion but does NOT burn on its own!

+Stu haels so why when my sister was smoking with the oxygen on , did it ignite and the hose was flying all over the room with a one foot flame shooting shooting out of the end of the hose ?

+Randall Polk it wasn't the oxygen that was burning. it was the pipe carrying the oxygen but as combustion is so vigorous it probably appeared that the oxygen was burning like a rocket. as previously stated, oxygen is strong supporter of combustion but doesn't burn in its own right. a flame in a room where there is 100% oxygen wouldn't result I'm an explosion. the flame would just burn very dramatically. If youre not convinced then do a little research. plenty of info online..

+Randall Polk Liberals feel they have to lie to the public for their own safety rather than just being honest. Oxygen is NOT flammable and cannot burn! These accidents are simply people probably falling asleep and ignition their mask, blanket, mattress etc. Oxygen only helps a fire burn hotter and faster when and if their is high saturation. An oxygen mask is incapable of saturating a room unless the tank has been opened fully. A nebulizer is completely safe. Just think, we were smoking in hospital rooms well into the 80's! The danger to the Liberal with smoking in hospitals was not oxygen blowing up but second hand smoke! Another Liberal lie told to us.

yup - there is a heat source in the vaping device. What you will find with oxygen therapy is that as the concentration of oxygen increases the fire resistance in things like soft furnishings, bed linen, curtains etc rapidly decreases so effectively where there is enough oxygen then pretty much everything will catch fire rapidly. The only thing missing would be the ignition source - that could easily come from your vaper.. Additionally dont forget that vaping liquids contain oil - oil and compressed O2 do not mix as it can cause ignition (similar to how a diesel engine starts up)

I dread at the notion of someone smoking while on oxygen.

Oxygen is not flammable, it doesn’t ignite.

First off, oxygen is not flammable. Without oxygen there is no flame. Second, the O2 and smoking doesn't burst into fire. The O2 will make the fire burn a bit bigger. But if your O2 tubes are in your nose and you are breathing it in the the oxygen won't hit the flame. Lastly, your "demonstration," the cigarette wasn't even lit. The fire started from the nostril and came out of the dummy. Why dont you try to redo that experiment with lighting the cigarette not the inside of the dummy

People are so blind.not one experiment proves this.only way a cigarette starts fire with oxygen machine is if the person falls asleep and drops cigarette in couch then a fire starts and oxygen helps it burn faster.
