Home Makeover Has Their Neighbours Jealous | Ugly House To Lovely House | Abode

Ойын-сауық

George Clarke is on a mission to redesign the Home of Britain. Rachel and James are sick of their home. Purchased for $260,000, they prioritised the location of the property over the space. Now they’re fast outgrowing their home and feel like their house doesn’t reflect their fun personalities. After living in Sydney Australia for 8 months, the couple were heavily inspired by the individuality of each property, how every building they entered felt different. Can designer, Ed, create a space for the couple that they will feel proud to call their own and that is big enough for their growing family?

I don't like this architect at all. He leaves me with the impression that everything must be done to his tastes and the client's opinion is irrelevant. The lunacy of having bicycles hanging on a wall in crime rife modern UK and even suggesting that they should buy new bicycles demonstrates that he is living in cloud cuckoo land.

My thoughts exactly! I was seriously thrown by this suggestion. On top of which, even were it not the case (and WHO needs to be constantly stressed/worried about that exact thing?!?!), leaving bicycles exposed to the elements (and an overhang will NOT protect a bike from horizontal rain) is irresponsible. The whole thing was ill thought out.

The house my family lived in from 1976 to 1978 in Melton looks almost exactly like that house - including the garage when my father who was in the USAF was assigned to RAF Woodbridge - Looking on Google Earth, I went to street level and saw that the house has not changed much at all since we came back to the States...

They kind of messed up the design by 1) nixing the idea for the hexagonal cladding, which would have looked fab! 2) watering the pink shade down so much you might has well have just gone with white. I do think, if they didn't like pink, they should have called canary yellow. Or sky blue. Or tricorn black. Or slate grey. But with boldness, not watered-down. I'm sure it was frustrating for the architect. I think the bricked-in door on the front for a bike shed has little charm, but it probably works ok for their purposes... hey, as long as they're happy, because they have to live there.

I like the orange and the new entry way was a must but frankly the rest of the project is really not to my taste. The client didn't like the pink. A good architect would have proposed another bold color instaed of ignoring his client. He is not the one payong the work, nor is he the one living with the result. He shouldn't have the last word on such personal choices as colours. If he really wanted bold, why not go for the same orange as the window or a dark grey like the cladding or some sort of deep dark blue ? Maybe they would have liked that better. And the "secret door" outside is ridiculous. A normal door the same color as their front door would have worked perfectly too. Far from my favorite episode in this program.

Actually turned out well. Would have tweeted a few things. 1. Glass door to snug/ formal sitting room. Made it more open feel. 2. Would have added the same grey siding used on exterior extension, under the original bay window out front. That small change would have tied it all together better. 3. Would have had kitchen cabinets and counters made wall to wall on the back wall. They currently stop short by I'm guessing 30cm on each end and that's not only a waste in a small kitchen but a place for dust, and things to accidentally fall off the side.

"Small footprint of the house" so let's eliminate floor space within the footprint. Sure, Wilbur. Try again. A double height space that is taller than it is either in length or width feels like an elevator shaft. It brings the walls in because of the sight line being vertical. Horizontal takes the eye out. A normal ceiling would have created more usable space upstairs for the minimal cost of some floor joists and a door. From what I see, the design is an extravagant flop before the shovel hits the ground.

When you go over the budget by 30k, you damn well should love every inch of it. I think the wife is probably worried about the money...and again, not loving every inch of it. Paint the bathroom pod! But it should be complimentary to the brick and the orange. I would probably choose Tricorn Black...a lovely Sherwin Williams paint shade of black with blue undertones. That's what it is in America anyway. The UK may have a different shade of Tricorn.😊

When you want a home to look like you want it to look then you hire contractor not the architect and designer. It’s their vision and thats why they exist. If you don’t like one designer you hire another. But to expect that they’ll behave like your servants just because you paid them, you have no idea or experience how this actually goes. And on top of it this architect worked for this family for free.

Actually I really like the spaciousness. If they were absolutely desperate for an extra bedroom then perhaps a double height wouldn’t have made sense but the orange sliding glass door and the light in the back make the house something special. I think the planners were a bit mad not to approve the black tiling in the front. It looks great in the back. As for the pink cube, that’s very easily addressed. It’s just paint and they can change it. It looks pretty interesting from the kitchen. I’m not really a big fan of it in the bedroom. Slate gray might look cool. The brick door reminds me of something that hobbits might do, but who the planning board would not approve the square black tiles all the way down to the bottom so the architect had to do something that would get by planning. The balcony is certainly big enough to put in a desk and make it into a small workspace. another way to go would be a big armchair. I wouldn’t say it’s useless.
