[PART 1/2 because of course I wrote too much] Okay this is seriously the best thing I've seen in a while. Here are my favorite parts: 0:02 The fact that all the family members are there (and the way they're posed) really gets me to feel the anxiety and helplessness of a family fight where you feel powerless to stop your family members who are fighting 0:04 This is a really cool "camera" angle. The fact that we don't really get angles like this is GF (iirc??) amplifies the viewer's normal feeling that an angle like this is kinda scary and wrong because we're not supposed to be viewing life from the ground usually. Really emphasizes how powerless it feels to be kicked out. 0:09 Stan puts on his seatbelt XD This probably isn't intended to amuse me but it does because Stan's usually thought of as a rebellious rulebreaker, and here he is following safety laws like a good boy, right after getting kicked out of his home for messing things up, no less (Seriously though, wearing seatbelts is really important, so I'm glad Stan's being a good role model for the viewers!!) 0:20 I find it really interesting that you chose to leave out Ford getting sucked into the portal (at least in this part of the video). It's honestly a bit jarring since that's a scene I usually expect to see in GF fan videos since it's so dramatic, so to skip straight from a bit of the argument with Ford to after he's gone feels really different. But all of that's a good thing because now we can feel like Stan did: he saw his brother all too briefly, then he disappeared rather suddenly, and now all we're left with is a sense of loss. Another camera angle from the ground too. 0:24 Nice camera angle to really make it dramatic how much effort he's putting in 0:27 And then he just hugs the book while the portal looms ominously in the background, having defeated his first attempt to reactivate it. I think the fact that we didn't see what the portal did to Ford makes it feel more ominous (even though we've all seen the show and know perfectly well what happened). The shots of Stan studying help emphasize how much work he did to try to figure the portal out. 0:47 Okay I gotta smile at this because it's always bothered me how Stan was able to fake his own death. Like... did he burn someone else's body, or are the police just REALLY stupid???? I guess having him burn a scarecrow with a piece of paper with his face drawn on it makes me feel like you're lampshading the absurdity of the situation, which, whether it was what you were going for or not, amuses me :D Murder Hut - nice continuity reference 1:18 I like that you remembered not to put Stan in his current outfit. Also, and I didn't realize this until my second or third time watching it or so, but you made him be wearing Ford's gloves which makes sense since his nephew and niece-in-law think he's Ford. The gloves kinda go well with the outfit and the fact that he's in a hospital holding something precious and fragile. 1:20 I hadn't really thought much about the fact that you'd be able to see Dipper's birthmark when he was a baby. Also, the fact that this scene is shown at all means that you know about what Stan says in the video game (I'm assuming), so kudos on knowing that since I think that information isn't as well-known in the fanbase as a lot of other things. 1:27 Young Soos :D 1:34 Good ol' Wax Stan angst, a true fan video classic. This scene wasn't unexpected at all - until Stan gets increasingly upset until finally booking it at 1:45, which I definitely was not expecting - and neither were Dipper, Mabel, and Soos. 1:48 Having Stan frantically run to the basement while "Are you dead?" plays is pretty powerful. (This is definitely one of the parts of the video where I notice the song lyrics the most.) 2:18 Great facial expressions here. Dipper is happy at having caught Gideon (who's protesting about it), but little does Dipper know that Grunkle Stan, who he's not paying attention to at all, has a secret! Really sells me on how furtive Stan is being by having to hide something from his great-niece and -nephew. 2:21 and 2:22 Since the show focuses on how Dipper feels about the black light revelation, it's cool to see Stan realizing he missed potentially a whole bunch of information, not for a few months, but for 30 years!

[PART 2/2] 2:33 He sees the kids watch him get arrested (with the camera angle once against showing the helplessness of being on the ground) And then at 2:34 he's frantically running down the stairs because he (unlike us) didn't get to see what's happened in the basement since he got arrested so he's gotta go make sure he isn't too late (great pacing and angles here, esp. 2:34 where he seems to run flying past the "camera" (nice job with the flying coattails, which I guess also adds the subconcious associations we have with capes - strength and heroism - maybe???), and then his hand on the door, and the suspense 'cause he doesn't know what he'll find (which we can feel even though we do) 2:37 I just noticed the waste barrel by the door, nice touch 2:39 "He doesn't know how to communicate" - another place I notice the lyrics; they work well for this shot And then we get some fast flashbacks!! And 2:44 is a nice dramatic angle (also, having him put his hand on his chest is a nice subconcious way to make him look in (emotional) pain [and/or patriotic which means good??? idk]) 2:45 is more of a normal mostly flat angle but that works because when combined with his arm posture and especially facial expression. He kinda mirrors the extremely brief flash of Ford we get also at 2:45 (which is so fast I had trouble pausing the video on it). Also the fact that Stan has some light on him right before that parallels it, along with the TV glow at 2:44 (what's interesting is that in this shot they're both on the floor, but in a safe comfortable way, not a helpless way. But the floor angle and the glow are both foreshadowing for negative things later). The shot of Ford in the portal is really effective, both because the physical parallels with the shot of Stan make it feel like Stan is practically as desperate to not lose the chance to get Ford back as Ford himself was when he was being sucked away, and because getting an extremely brief flash of the portal scene when didn't get to see it before (which makes it more exciting when we do get it) feels a bit like a repressed memory of something so bad and ominous we're still not shown all of it. 2:45 Stan tries to use the hand gesture for calming others down and asserting control over the situation, while his face shows his desperation and feeling that he isn't in control. Also 2:45, the shot of Dipper, Soos and Mabel features a steep ground angel on Dipper and Soos (making them look tall, scary and threatening and thus making us feel that Stan doesn't have control of the situation), but because of Mabel's posture the angel looks flat on her which works well with the fact that she isn't angry (it makes her look less threatening) and also is reacting differently to Dipper and Soos (as shown by the contrast between her and them). 3:05-3:06 Good job showing Stan feeling jealous and that leading to him leaving the Wheel, esp. since we go from him being angry at home to his anger getting stronger in the Cipher Wheel (which doesn't need to be shown since we've already seen the show and know about it, so we can just focus on Stan's expressions) where he apparently makes the decision to leave the wheel. Next shot cuts straight to him having followed the decision he made. This is a cut that shows him abruptly going far away once he makes his decision with no time for anyone to convince him otherwise - which is how Ford is shown to feel. But it's too late! If Stan is going to get left in the background in the 3:04 shot (where I just noticed Soos looks at him sadly) and Ford isn't going to notice, then Stan won't come back to him now! (Also, nice that he's standing in front of a yellow triangle, since he's making the wrong choice, kinda like Ford once made the wrong choice to befriend Bill) 3:08 Even more emphasis on the yellow triangle, which looms ominously onscreen. Nice. (Perhaps making us think of the triangle-shaped portal which also glowed?) Also the camera position makes Stan seem like a force that'll have to be reckoned with if you want to make him come back. And then we get more flashbacks, first brief ones of his discussion with Ford and then of the lightbulb incident (with a bit of floor angle and Ford's back to him), and then a lingering, detailed one of the night he got kicked out and Ford shut the curtain on him, blocking him from the light and leaving him in the darkness, the lingering showing that THIS is the memory at the root of Stan's anger, THIS is ultimately what he's upset about. And the fact that his back is to the camera and he's looking at a light matches nicely with the shot of Ford with his back to the camera making the lightbulb shine, and perhaps to the shot where Stan's in front of the yellow triangle light and you can't see his face in that one either. 3:25 Like with the portal scene at the beginning, I find it really interesting that you cut out the part we're all really familiar with. Seeing Stan having just punched Bill facing straight into the camera instead of sideways isn't something we've seen before (at least that I've seen) so it has the effect of once again breathing new life into a scene we've all seen a million times. Cutting out the part where Bill is actually killed focuses us nicely on Stan, which works since this video's about him, not his relationship with Bill. 3:36 Really creative and unique transition as has been said. Mabel and Dipper don't have to be symbols on the Cipher Wheel anymore. 3:53 After seeing a couple shots of the Shack in pretty sorry condition, we see Stan, who's lost his memory, actually appear happy to live in the Shack. Everyone else is rightly concerned about him XD 4:08 Another steep ground angel, but this time it's focused on Stan, which combines the helplessness we feel from seeming to be on the ground with the power it feels like Stan has because he seems taller than us, to form a sort of hopeful rising from the ashes - not steady yet, but there's hope. Then we get a few angels that are more stable because things are righting themselves now, And Cut. ...Okay, that was definitely longer than I was originally intending, but what else is new. TL;DR: I liked the camera angels (which I doubt I used the correct terms for as I've never been to film school), the timing of the flashback clips, what was chosen to be left out, and the colors.

@@aligningducks5887 That tldr could not ever hope to sum up what you have written. Yours is worth that of millions. Sorry I took so long to reply, I knew I wanted to sit down and flip through frame by frame alongside your commentary. Thank so much you for taking the time to write all of this! ok I love how the analysis starts at 0:02 - I am so ridiculously flattered. Wearing a seatbelt is one of the fundamental laws of Gravity Falls. Even bill cannot break this (and he tried so so many times) 0:47 it is a bit ridiculous ain't it? luckily the cops in gravity falls aren't too bright... 0:20 I had not even thought the missing bits to be unusual until you mentioned it. It was just how the scenes played in my head with the music. My main focus was on the beginning and the aftermath. You're right that a viewer without context would find the presence of the portal ominous as the effects are not shown, and dare I say ain't that just a good piece of mystery. 1:20 I have never played the gravity falls video game! The hospital scene was mostly speculation, wiki browsing, and fandom osmosis "1:48 Having Stan frantically run to the basement while "Are you dead?" plays is pretty powerful." I'm glad it's so hard-hitting, I've gotten a lot of comments on this, but it's one of those things where it just came out naturally (so I'm surprised by (and very grateful for) all the surprise) - where did Stan run off to? Well to the portal room of course, because that's what's on his mind. 2:22 The black light scene was one of the first to get finalized! There is some good gear turning and hurt for Stan that I don't think is hit upon enough! 2:34 was one of my favourites pacing wise with the music to do! You've added so much by associating this with flying and heroes coming to the rescue. 2:45 it does indeed go fast, I remember it was 1/12th of a second so props for finding it :) You're right ford and stans poses do tend to mirror each other, like two sides of the same coin - regret 3:04 Aand regret not taking the time to detail Soos's expression more. Most frames are pretty rushed you can probably tell haha 3:05-3:06 "Good job showing Stan feeling jealous and that leading to him leaving the Wheel" thank you! unfortunately for non-fandom viewers, this will be hard to follow - trade-offs, trade-offs... "he makes his decision with no time for anyone to convince him otherwise" You're right, and that's a really neat way to put it! Stan is pushed to the back by ford and now he won't come back easily "blocking him from the light and leaving him in the darkness" Ha! Stan is always having lights be blocked or wink out in his presence eh. That was my hazy intention and you've solidified it nicely Don't worry, I've never been to film school either. Camera angles, timing, and colours are my absolute favourite things to do, so I sincerely thank you for appreciating them! Your nearly second by second review (holy crap) has truly elevated this piece and consequently, the garbled images duck taped together now seem that much more cohesive.

@@sealbatross You're welcome, thanks for taking the time to make this video!! :) Okay, I'm gonna include the video times that go with the comments of yours that I'm replying to :D 0:20 I didn't realize it until I watched the video again today, but the other common scene you left out, between Ford disappearing and Bill getting defeated, was Mabel deciding not to press the button. I see that one a lot in videos (usually in the context of exploring Stan's relationships with the other characters and his ability to trust and/or be trusted by them); it's interesting that this video worked well without it, which I guess is because its focus is on how he feels about Ford, not his relationship with Mabel. 1:20 I haven't played the video game either, I think I saw it mentioned on the wiki and then managed to find pictures of what Stan says in it, which is how I know Stan was there after the birth. 1:48 Huh, it's been a long time since I've watched the Wax Stan episode so I'd completely forgotten that he runs off, which is why him running off took me by surprise. Yeah, showing him running to the basement is a cool natural extension of that moment! 2:34 The capes thing I think I learned from Scott McCloud's books Understanding Comics and Making Comics, but I might be wrong. The stuff about hand gestures I learned from him, and all the stuff about the psychological effects of angles* and height, iirc. (His books are amazing, I'd highly recommend reading them if you haven't!!) 2:45 Yeah, lots of rapid pausing and unpausing of the video :D I think I saw someone mention one time that there's a way to go through videos frame by frame, which I really should figure out how to do sometime (knowing how to do that wasn't really necessary in this case, but I've seen KZread videos where text is flashed on the screen so fast I'm not always able to find it, at least without great difficulty). 3:05-3:06 Honestly I don't really think you need to worry about whether non-fandom viewers will understand stuff, just whether fandom-viewers will. If someone's watching a GF video without having seen the show, they'll probably understand that they won't understand everything until they watch the show. So I guess when non-fandom viewers watch a GF video they don't need to understand everything, they just need to be intrigued and captivated enough to want to watch the show. Videos like this are plenty intriguing so I'd say they're good to go. (Regarding your last sentence:) Aw, thanks! I don't usually get compliments that are that descriptive, so I definitely appreciate it XD Yeah, I find it fun to analyze why things work or don't work, cuz then I can try to apply what I learn to the stuff I make (when I get around to making it, that is). Writing out an analysis of something is a fun way to organize my thoughts on it (and it usually leads to me thinking up more thoughts as well, which is partly why I tend to write more than I intend to...) All the GF video binging I've been doing recently has made me really want to learn how to make my own animatics. I just need to get better at drawing, get a LOT better at video editing, and learn how to animate. (I've technically made a couple flipbooks or so, but I have never in my entire life animated anything on a computer...) Anyway, if you can get this good without going to film school, then I guess there's hope for me! (I hope...) *Not "angels", dangit. Apparently I overlooked the last three instances of this misspelling (along with a couple other errors), but I guess that's what I get for writing and proofreading while sleep deprived...

They're really good, gotta give em a read again sometime (i honestly don't recall hand gestures in there whoops) 2:45 for going frame by frame, if you are on a computer, use the "," and "." keys to go backward and forward respectfully! 3:05-3:06 fair enough, just had a relative who was extremely confused by it and I felt pretty bad haha, so thank you! @@sealbatross [PART 1/2] 0:20 What do you mean by "closure"? 2:34 Oh okay good! I think the part about hand gestures is in Making Comics (I just flipped through Understanding Comics and didn't see it, and would do the same for Making Comics if it wasn't currently lost somewhere around the house) 2:45 Okay thanks, I'll have to try that! Favorite GF videos so far: Go to the Playlists section on my channel and look at the playlist called Favorite Gravity Falls Videos (which I've been meaning to create and was going to go create once I'm done with this comment, but this comment is taking longer to write than I thought it would so I won't have time to do it right now, so just, uh, wait until I ETA this comment to say I'm done). Also look at the Hamilton x Gravity Falls playlist if that sounds appealing. That one probably needs updating, but the videos I've got in it so far should be in chronological order to the musical. Here're a couple more I unfortunately couldn't put in because they're marked for kids: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2Vlq7ucadOwhrQ.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmqNz62qm9uwY8Y.html Flipbooks: Yeah, I was assigned to make one of the cell cycle in high school (still have it somewhere), and also I once spent part of a wedding reception turning some of the bottom part of the guest book into a flipbook (instead of, y'know, actually socializing...) - unfortunately I didn't get any footage of that one, but it was really fun! I'm on DeviantArt; I just Watched you so it should be easy to find me :D (assuming you get told people's names when they Watch you...? Idk. If you don't, it's AligningDucks, same as my KZread channel, but a lot better quality since my drawing skills are decently okay while my video editing skills are currently abysmal...) Oh, before I forget, thanks for pinning my comment! :D Idk if you did that today, or yesterday and I just didn't notice, but thank you! That hasn't happened to me before :3

I LOVE how their conflict was resolved. The point wasn’t Stan’s sacrifice itself, but the fact that Stan gave up his old identity to become a new person out of his brother’s shadow. Everyone always thought Ford was better, and Stan was posing as him for 30 years, but Stan sacrificed his alias to finally escape out of his brother’s shadow, he went from his fake “Stanford” self he had been posing as for so long, to who he really is... “Stanley”. It’s honestly really beautiful.

I just realized that he loved Wax Stan not because it looked like him, but it reminded him of his brother. The fact that Wax Stan was "killed" definitely didn't help with the trauma of losing his brother, it was probably worse 'cause both times were technically his fault. He pushed his brother into the portal and when he left Wax Stan for a moment he "died".

This PMV has so much emotion. The expressions are wonderful and the camera-view is stunning! I would love to go into detail but I know a few people have already done that and putting it into my own words would probably end up being hard to read... Again, this is so well put together, every frama has so much true emotion and detail. Unlike most PMVs and MAPs that I have seen, this doesn't focus on the whole family's relationship, but instead the pain and hurt in Stanley and Stanford's... Which I find unique and- colorful? Long story short- this is wonderful and brought a lot of emotion and such with it~ thank you
