There’s something extra special about pentatonix. A flavor or seasoning that’s missing from most uniform acapella groups. They always have a surprise no one else thinks of first.

so it is home Fries and pentaholics. Pentatonix came on the scene a year before Home Free. They were both on the singing competition the Sing-Off. Pentatonix won the competition in 2011, and Home Free won it in 2012. I think they are both amazing groups; you should check out their seasons because they are amazing!

Great reaction. All (HF, PTX, voiceplay, and voctave) are really amazing. Personally I prefer PTX cuz they cover ALL genres..theater, church, pop, country, dance, r&b, soul, EDM, kpop, and even rap and also have their own music. They may be too "mainstream" for many but they did put a capella on the Grammy map.

the mind-blowing thing about PTX was the 5 of them all met, for the first time, the DAY BEFORE THEIR AUDITION!! Scott, Mitch and Kirstin had been performing together for about 10 years but they just met Avi and Kevin the day before their Sing-Off audition and of course, it was MAGIC. amazing!

My reaction is that these two groups are both amazing with how they do their music. PTX is an amazing group at all they do and I give them props for it. Then you take Home Free and they do their songs different and it is my kind of music. I have always loved country music from the time I was a kid. They both do their thing in a different way. That is what makes them all great. The wonderful thing about them is that they all get along. Thanks for reacting to both. 😊

For me it's PTX. Reason: PTX is crystal clear in the words and arrangement. The beatboxer is more defined and intentional carrying the rhythm and beat. I love Home Free but in different songs. When A Man Loves A Woman is one of my favorites by HF. If you haven't heard it I recommend it. Man Of Constant Sorrow is fantastic. And by PTX, I suggest Seasons of Love and Prayers For this World. Anyway it's not a competition... they are both epic! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I've been a Pentaholic since their first song on The Sing Off 11 years ago (9/26/2011 to be exact) that they won. That said, when Home Free was on the same show 2 years later, I became a bog fan of theirs too. In fact, on one of the shows late in the season, PTX met with them and that was shown on TV. Avi has been featured on 2 of their videos even. They have no animosity toward each other, and I don't think their fans do either. Yes, some (many?) probably lean to one or the other, but I'd say most root for both of them.

I’ve followed Pentatonix since 2011 when they were on NBC’s 3rd season of the Sing-off competition: Which they won. They are the group who kicked the door open to put A Capella into the relevant mainstream. Home Free won season 4 Of the Sing-off in 2013. Most Pentaholics (If not all) are Home Free supporters and you should be made aware that there are 2 more elite A Capella groups: Voiceplay & Voctave. While Avi Kaplan has collaborated with Home Free (Ring of Fire), he was never actually part of the group. He and Tim Foust (the bass for Home Free) are friends and have taught each other techniques and methods. Tim has also worked with Geoff Castellucci (the bass for VoicePlay) and helped him with perfecting his growl and subharmonic techniques, so they all know and respect each other. While I enjoy both versions of this song, the big difference for me is the tone that Kirstin's voice gives to Pentatonix. Both of the other big a cappella groups are all-male (well, VoicePlay has been featuring a lot of female singers since they lost their high tenor Earl), and the female voice she gives to Pentatonix is what gives them a distinct difference. But I'll listen to anything any of them put out - haven't heard a "bad one" from any of them yet!

It's a beautiful song, and both groups covered it beautifully. I personally prefer the Pentatonix version, because, for me, the crescendo parts seem to add that spiritual lifting and awe that this baby would be world changing. I love singing, and have been in a capella groups since I was about 7 years old. My dad would play a song on his record player that he liked, and make me listen. He would ask if I got it, then I would teach all the parts to my siblings, and we would sing it in church. My sisters and I could switch parts and people couldn't tell who was singing which part.

Although both bands have wonderful harmonies and beat boxing, I think it's the ability of Home Free to vocally convey the emotional context of a song that causes me to favour their version. Welcome to the world Of a capella. Pentatonix is considered the first group that made a capella noticed. Before, most groups were collegiate or “barbershop” groups or family. Even just friends getting together to sing. Some church choral groups also. They started as a group of 3 in high school (Scott, Kirsty, Mitch). After graduation for Scott and Kirsty, (Mitch was finishing his senior year) Scott went to a college in California. while there he heard of a TV series called the Sing Off. It was a competition for a capella groups. Scott called Kirsty and Matt and both were interested. However, the show wanted at least 5 people in the group before they could compete. Thru a friend who later became their manager and arranger (Ben Bran) they found a bass Avi Kaplan and by some miracle found Kevin On You Tube playing a cello AND beatboxing. They managed to contact him and he agreed to join them. With 5 people they came up with the name Pentatonix (a play on the pentatonic scale consisting of 5 notes). The amazing thing was Avi and Kevin had only 1 week of being with the others before the show started. They were on the 3rd season and won! (It was noted on the show that Scott, Kirsty and Mitch were all 19 years old at the time)!😊 Home Free was on the 4th season. They were a group that were entertainment on a cruise ship. I don’t know how they found out about the TV show but they were accepted as a group to try out and made it on the show. The show featuring both groups is on You Tube and it would really be worthwhile to look them up. The videos give intro information as well as the critiques of the judges on their performances. In fact, Pentatonix was invited back for the 4th season to perform and they also met Home Free and gave them some advice about how to handle their singing and actions to give them a good chance of winning on the show.

Austin, Tim and Avi all live in Nashville now. Oh Avi and Kevin were 22 at the time of the Sing-Off finishing college. Ben Bram got Avi for them he knew him in the acapella community.

"Pentatonix is considered the first group that made a capella noticed." Rockapella would disagree. They might not have won Grammies, but they brought acapella to national and international notice as an exciting format that does more than barbershop and very traditional choral music.

To try to compare these groups is like comparing a corvette to a cobra. They both have unbelievable power, and sound amazing. You’re right that this is one of those songs that transcends the human, and reaches the divine. Mark Lowry wrote this song as a commission from his pastor, so I imagine that the Holy Spirit was working with him back in’84. PTX would be happy to be compared and contrasted to HF, and vice versa, they’re music lovers just like us.

Basses Avi Kaplan (Pentatonix) and Tim Foust (Home Free) have both blown speakers in concert. There are videos out there of some of those occurrences. I love both groups but admittedly watch/listen to PTX more. Have been a fan since 2011 when PTX was on the sing off. Really enjoying seeing the both of you enjoy the music and share your opinions and impressions. You mentioned in a dfferent video that you enjoy all sorts of music. Recently Rob and Austin from Home Free released a video of them singing "Nessun Dorma" from the Opera "Turandot." It's terrific. Maybe you could do a comparison of that one?

Most of us like them both, Pentaholix and Home Fries realize that both groups are amazing. But then again I am the kind that have never understood the concept of oh this is better or that is better, I like both, as to the base singers, Avi is a Basso Profundo, and Tim Foust has blown more speakers during concerts than anyone else I have heard of. And Avi did Ring of FIre with Home Free. Pentatonix won The Sing Off 2011, and Home Free won 2012.. Pentatonix first as a group performace was in 2011, and Home Free started in 2000.... Still both groups like each other.

I very much appreciate that the fans of the different groups have such respect for ALL the groups. And I agree: Pentatonix, Voice Play, and Home Free are ALL worth some rabbit hole time. Time well spent. Each does have their own fortes though: Halloween and theatrics - definitely owned by VoicePlay/Castelucci (although I would enjoy stuff by the other two as well). Pop/radio hits - Pentatonix has an edge. Daft punk medley blew me away. (although, again: I'd enjoy either of the other two on pop/radio stuff as well). In the end, though, I think I'm a home fry. Their humility, their "message", their humor...all of them speak to me. And they DO have a special synergy: each of the singers in Home Free is outstanding--heck, each of the singers in all three groups is amazing!!!--but Home Free songs show 5 singers who can each take front and center BUT ALSO completely blend into "the band"'s sound when they're not front and center. Listening to songs like Mayday and End of the Road, I can't tell which voice is which if it's not the lead voice. And while I enjoy listening to any one of them individually, it's when all five of them blend their talents that true magic happens. (And once again, the other two groups are pretty amazing along those lines as well.) In the end, we're all blessed as fans to be able to listen to pieces by all three groups. I'm endlessly thankful any time I get to listen to any of them. Food for the ears and the soul in all 3 cases!

I truly appreciate reactions that let the music play and comment afterwards. Too many keep interrupting. Thank you for waiting. I'm subscribing because of that and your acknowledging that both Home Free and Pentatonix are equally amazing. Also love the pup's reaction.

Hadn't heard the HF version before. Very different approach. It felt "pulled down" a bit more and the crescendos were big but in the "lower spaces". Pentatonix's approach was to take the crescendo upwards which makes me personally feel elevated. Interesting how the choices made the song sound so different. I think that's great though because otherwise we'd have clones. I'm more a PTX listener but I also like HF.

I’m a little late to comment on but I’m guessing home free went in a completely different direction with this song is because pentatonix having done this song in 2014 has pretty much owned this song for years with it being one off their most popular Christmas songs and videos that a version done by any other a cappella group later would automatically be compared to it. I’m sure they tried to make it as different as possible than that of the Ptx arrangement. I personally prefer the Ptx version because I like their arrangement better and the mix of voices is my preference to anything with a country flavor. Plus I need those higher voices of Mitch and Kirstie.

I love both groups. I am more of Home Fries fan because I lean to the country version of songs but with this song Pentatonix does an excellent version of the more traditional version of the song.

I love both groups.....they all have their best....but I do prefer HF in general. I love PTX "My favorite things", "Little Drummer Boy", "12 days of Christmas" and so many more....for HF...I love their pure harmony arrangements where the percussion is more subtle and real percussion. For HF, I love "Do you hear what I hear" which was arranged by Adam, vocal percussion, and is a bass and percussion feast!. Their version of "Auld Lang Syne" is amazing 5 part harmony. If you want bass rumble, check out "Do you hear what I hear" from HF.

I love both groups. But it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Home free has a more “Americana” country flair, which is phenomenal. Whereas PTX is far more diverse, with more vocal range. In my opinion, I’ve got to go with PTX. But I could never say anything negative about home free. In the case between these groups, it is literally personal preference.

I think You're A Mean One, Mr Grinch is done by Voiceplay, Home Free and Pentatonix. But I might have confused Voctave with one of the first two. I LOVE Matt in Pentatonix's version. Be brave and say what you like. As you say, they are both great yet covering different styles, even where there is crossover. For this song I think the higher voices of Pentatonix are more suitable. But I know I am biased against Home Free as I don't like country music. Both groups can do a good classical song when it suits them.
