Home Free released this video on 2/3/21, the 62nd anniversary of the plane crash. Also, the song was released 50years ago in 1971! Hopefully, this will get Home Free the recognition that they deserve!

When Don McLean wrote this song and sang it in 1971, besides the loss of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper, it was about Vietnam and the unrest in the our country at the time. You will see some of that in the pictures on the wall. I had the feels also. Home Free are an amazing bunch of guys Thank you so much for your reaction.

Saw an interview with Don McLean last night. When he was asked why he decided to redo the song, he said the following; "Home Free contacted me about remaking the song and asked if I would join them" "This version is their song, not mine. I was there for the intro, the end and between verses" "I think it turned out really well" Interviewer: "I think so as well"

Yeah, that was my initial reaction - Wow! Can I just say how Adam really kept up the beat the entire song! Then, of course, the harmonies, and they each got their time to shine as well! Also, Don sounds so great, despite being in his 70's! Wow!

Apparently Don McLean approached them to do this re-release of the song. They absolutely nailed it. Don still has a hell of a voice. I loved how they each got a verse to sing. Kudos to whomever did the final mix because they were as important to this being as good as it was as any of those singing.

The Big Bopper was the old man at 29. 29. Buddy Holly was 22, and Ritchie Valens was 17. They were so young. I’m old enough (had I started out right after HS) to be The Big Bopper’s mom. I have a son who is almost 16. Home Free did an amazing job with this song. It still makes me cry.

This song IS American culture of the time. Every phrase has a different meaning than it seems to have. Which is why this song brings me to tears each time I hear it. The hidden meanings along with the beauty of the song and the guys only lend to all that. I loved this song 50 yrs ago when it first came out. Don McLean was actually a 13yr news paper delivery boy at the time of the crash, so he really DID deliver the bad news to the doorstep. But every word of this song reflects the times of a "generation lost in space". All the mentions..the Monotones, the Byrds, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Mick Jagger... Elvis, John Kennedy, Manson, all mentioned without being mentioned..unless you knew the times.

This was pure joy for the ears!! I was a young boy when the Music Died.... it was a surreal time in America...all 3 musical icons (Holley-Valens-Bopper)...just gone....when American Pie came out, along came the memories of that time along with the then current music champions of the day... now 50 years later seeing Don McLean with his aged yet velvety voice lead the way with 5 of the greatest musicians of our present age. It was pure musical magic - Each HF member sang to their highest standard so far, Adam is a percussionist mastermind, and Don, well, what more can be said? His music is timeless and caused me to reflect back to a more simpler time of youth and discovery. The ending of this musical masterpiece was sweet, simple and powerful and seeing him take his glasses off at the end brought this old rock and roller to tears. This is the greatest cover and video they have come out with in my opinion. Thanks as well for your tender and truthful reaction to a time and a song that has touched peoples hearts for 62 years - I know it has touched me deeply - words cannot express. RichieC

towards the end he talks about a girl who sang the blues. he asks if everything will be ok. she just smiles and walks away. $50 says that was Janis Joplin. She died 10 years after the crash in 1970 but it fits the timeline. Was she a ghost? Was she alive and knew something we didnt. who knows, it is his poem but it adds to the depth of the song.

Love all of your reactions. Seeing the full production of this does leave you quite stunned and speechless at the end doesn't it? My husband and I were from the era when the song came out, friends and fiance going to Vietnam and all the riots and anger going on. Don says he wrote the song then because America was going down hill. He wrote from his past of losing his dad young and then about the three musicians we lost all in one day. Then with the situation in '71 when he wrote and released this in America, he had to put it out then. Anyway my husband even was in tears with me when it ended, memories we had from back in the early '70s. A sad time then too. You're great. Take care.

I think it's crazy that this song is 8 minutes long and when it was over my first thought was "There is no way it's already over."

I really like that you have a small picture of you and larger one for the performers. Especially when it is a group or a lot of things going on around them. Although I thought I was listening carefully to your reaction it seems you did not mention Adam Rupp's feat of beat boxing endurance. Always enjoy your thoughtful way of reacting.

Thanks for clearing that up. Sorry for my comment. I waited until you did the video and always enjoy your reactions especially to Home Free. Take care and thanks again for taking the time to reply. BTW, have you watched the Long Black Train video that Tim Foust did with Chris Rupp.

In my humble opinion, I don't think Don McLean got the respect or recognition he deserved because his music didn't' quite fit what the radio stations wanted. Great song writer ... great vocals. The man is truly a legend. Oh yeah ... and Home Free was there, too. Every song they release becomes my new favorite. There just aren't enough adjectives to define how good they are! Considering the garbage on the radio these days, why they're not getting air time is baffling.
