Did this today, but I made a bracket to hold it firm so it doesn't break when kicked or bumped hard. Did the same as you and found everything I needed at Home Depot.

Thanks Ed. That is smart as it could easily break off if you catch it on something.

I used galvanized several years ago, the elbow has rusted and clogged. Brass may be a better choice. It is a great idea though, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comment and you have a good point. The good news is that any corrosion from it, etc will not get in the tank. I will be running air lines in my shop soon and plan to use copper or another material for sure. (Not galvanized or iron.)

Right, tank still seems good, elbow was plugged up tight. I have to say, it has taken many years to get that way, at least 15 and I probably could have been draining it more often. I replaced it with a kit on amazon with the elbow, valve and a braided hose. Take care.

I am giving this one to a buddy. The house I bought has a larger compressor....but of course no drain! Oh well, at least I know what to do now.

I stood mine up after removing the drain plug, nothing came out until I stuck a pencil in. Got about a quart of very rusty water after pushing the pencil through about an inch of sloughed-off rusty metal. At this point the tank is a potential bomb and is decommissioned. No water draining out is a bad sign.

*After years of hauling around a large,💫 **allabout.wiki/Husky** heavy, loud dewalt air compressor (that ironically was advertised as quiet, supposedly 78dB), I bought this. Facepalm. While it is not ‘silent’, I find myself chuckling every time I use it, sparing all my neighbors the terror of my former compressor. I use for inflating tires, impact wrench, finish nailers. Absolutely love it. And I store it under the garage sink in a 24” cabinet. I paired with a coil 1/2”, instead of a my former 50’ 5/8” hose that I had to lug across the yard from the shed, unpleasantly uncoil.... this little guy is light and portable; just a joy. Impact wrench is still capable of easing lug bolts, flywheel bolts, crank pulleys... just allow for a tiny bit of recovery now and then.*

Yeah, it was a good compressor for me. I ended up needing a little more volume, so went with a larger one a few years ago.

I stumbled on this idea while looking for compressor parts and really appreciate "KML Times Two" having posted it. It is a great design. I prefer the rigid pipe over the Huskey flex line version, as it is fixed in place. I did find a valve in Home Depot's tool section. SKU #252 140 (1/4 in. Full Port Ball Valve). It has a much shorter handle and should give better clearance around the axle brackets. I may even be able to use a shorter 1/4 pipe nipple to keep it away from the floor while moving the compressor (I purchased the six inch but may exchange it). Thanks again to "KML" :>)

+Mike Allen Thank you for taking the time to post this. Glad it helped. I use this mod all the time!

Thanks for the video. Does the valve make contact with the floor when you tilt back the compressor? Was going to modify mine today and it occurred to me that maybe I should orient the drain differently.

After removing the original drain on the tank you should have turned on the air compressor and let air blow out of the hole that way if it had any chunks of rust in the tank it would have blown them out along with any sluge that might be still in the tank.

Thanks David. The valve is pretty wide....and you can pretty much get out whatever you need since it is under pressure.

Why not just lengthen the front legs with a chunk of 2x4 or something (cheap hockey pucks are about $3 at sports shops) so that the drain is a little bit further off the ground? The compressor will still be stable while upright and give extra room to slide your hand under to open the drain. Then again if there's dirt on the ground it kind of sucks when you squat down to let the air out LoL. Nice vid. AND you didn't let all the moisture out. Let it drain at least halfway.

That sounds like it will work. As long as it doesn't stick too far out I guess.

The first thing I did when I bought mine was put a ball valve for the drain plug I thought it was mandatory

Not exactly cheap, but I am running ⅜" stainless tubing out of mine. I used to work in oil & gas & accumulated a ton of Swagelock fittings & tubing drops. The tubing is flexible enough to give without getting in a bind & strong enough to take a lick without kinking. I haven't priced the setup for a 90° ¼" NPT to ⅜" tubing the tubing ball valve, but I'm sure it isn't cheap.

I'm thinking of doing something similar to my Harbor Freight compressor. I really just want a ball valve so that I can easily flip it on and off instead of twirling the nut at the bottom. I'm not worried about spiders since the compressor is inside of my apartment.

Doesn't the pipe interfere when you move the tank on and angle of it's wheels.

  • @KMLTimesTwo

Luis Diaz I very rarely move mine, but I see your point. The total length does not stick out more than the tires so I think it will move around just fine. It did not hit the ground when I moved it to its home. But, yes there could be some interference at some point (if you are dragging through a yard.) Anyway, I can easily remove the elbow at the end to gain an extra inch. If you were to do one, you can just a shorter pipe. (I can always change mine out.) thanks for the comment!

@@KMLTimesTwo I think Wally saw your style of editing confounding, as one cut spilled into the next, it was too much for him to absorb. IMHO: I thought your segways were beautifully timed. The narrative was apt and comprehensive. It flowed. You are the Orson Welles of "Drain Mod Videos". BTW, I modified my Husky 20 gal similarly, followed your directions to a "T". Very pleased!
