Home Depot "Home Decoration Collection" Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring Install Tips

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

As I transition over to the newly created www.condorenew.ca I am still doing some projects on houses besides the regular handyman repair, replacement & install work which I do not see myself giving up..lol
Here we are installing a Luxury Vinyl Plank floor on the main floor of a home.

    I’ve been running into a nightmare putting in flooring from this same company (Home Decorators Collection brand). I’ve bought several rooms worth (like 40 boxes), all 12mm thick, and none of the rooms are coming together smoothly. These boards are incredibly frustrating.

    That is unfortunate. I have found that it can pay to take a day off to forget about the issues. You might be surprised when you return. I have learned that you need to be very careful and detailed when using click lock often small pieces get chipped off, as you slide the pieces into place, and if you do not clear them out the corners do not lock well.

    If installing on a concrete basement floor, make sure you do vacuum and clear the area of any little debris or 'boogers'. Those little bits will mess with the tongue and grove and damage some planks. Underlayment is not 'needed' as these LVP has a layer underneath them already but it can help minimize any debris from being knocked up with moving around.

    Good idea, though, It does not matter what type of floor you lay flooring on you need to continually be sweeping the area you are laying on.

    @@handymanreality great tutorial you posted, I've seen some folks installing the LVP on the subfloor with debris and dirt everywhere...A small portable shop vac will eliminate a lot of the mess.

    Thanks for the video. After we put the base board on top of flooring and then we caulk the bottom and top , once that is done , is the flooring floating anymore?

  • @handymanreality

    @handymanreality

    I have not seen the bottom of a baseboard caulked with exception of bathrooms. I would say no it is no longer "free floating" although may still expand & contract acceptably.

    Thank you so very much for subscribing. It has been quite some time since I did this job. Rarely, would I use adhesive. I prefer a brad nail for the riser which I install after the tread which nosing and the riser should keep in place. I have used adhesive on strips on the stair tread fronts when they are exposed such as sometimes happens when using metal nosing

    Any issues with gaps happening so far? Seems to be a common complaint around youtube about HDC vpf.

    None that I found when I visited again for other work. I feel it is important to fully interlock the ends which is why we take the step of pounding them and checking for height differences on every plank.

    Any suggestions? I bought the spacers and put between wall and vinyl for my first row and it was perfect but as soon as l add my second row it all gets wacky and unaligned. I didn’t want to keep going since it wasn’t lining up seamlessly. Help!

  • @handymanreality

    @handymanreality

    Let it go whacky until you have some rows together then realign your spacers. It is summer so you do not need much space because in the cold the floor will shrink not expand. If you are at the warmest time of your year I would be less regimented about spacing at the ends.

    @@handymanreality thank you! I’m in Florida so it’s hot or hotter. Lol but that helps. I think also l was trying to get it perfect and maybe hitting it too hard. I saw your other comments and thought maybe best to call it for the day and try again tomorrow. Figured if maybe it’s not right it’s because l am making it harder then it is. Lol

    @@marytalavera5400 Remove to that one and remove it to find out what is in the track then proceed. You can do this. Just take your time and try not to overthink. Anytime there is an issue there is a reason removing that plank and starting it over often exposes the problem.

    How did you put the pieces end to end? When I put mine in, there is an interlocking lip that stops the pieces from butting up on the ends. You then have to tap in it from the end to eliminate the gap and lock in the ends. While this seems correct, it's extremely time consuming, and some pieces are very difficult, adding tons of extra time to install the floor. At this rate, we will never get this floor installed. We have experience in installing snap together floating floor, but never had this problem before. Please adivse

  • @kb7tse

    @kb7tse

    @@handymanreality I see what you’re doing but for me it’s not working the same way. Because of the interlocking lip when I lock in the long side to a piece next to it, and then slide it over to the end of the piece in the same row they don’t line up without a gap, so they can be hammered down. This necessities a small gap that then must be hammered in the the end to close. This is all well and good in principle, but every piece requires this. It’s extremely time consuming and quite hard at the piece at the end of the row, close to the wall. Perhaps they have changed the design of the flooring since you made your video.

  • @kb7tse

    @@TXGrahamfam I didn't figure it out, but we did find a workaround. I assemble the whole row and put masking tape on the seams. Then my wife and kids help to lift the row and seat it into the already laid flooring. It's much easier to tap it in from the side. This is cumbersome but it works and it's faster than hammering on the end against the wall. I haven't laid this type of flooring before, and I suspect that the design is to make it waterproof. I don't know if others have a better method, but I do know this is going to be a long project. I have 120 boxes to put down.

    Thanks for responding. I ended up figuring it out. I used a small 2x4 block and a deadblow hammer to properly "seat" the click tech. Much easier. I would connect the short end first, then the cooresponding long side. Feel free to message if you need more help but I was able to knock it out in an afternoon.@@kb7tse
