@Jon Smith Thanks for the heads up! Now, with the adapter, these would actually be fun. Like I had said in my OP, dad and I bought some to try, expecting them to be a fun novelty, but not much more. Like you stated, for a young shooter, they are tame and easy to handle, and my nephew did like them. He’s about 85 pounds, and didn’t care much for the 1 1/8 oz slugs we were shooting. All jokes aside, letting him shoot a gun that doesn’t fit him well and walks all over him is really doing him a disservice. Getting the correct length of pull, overall length, and teaching him to manage recoil by starting with lighter loads will develop and enforce good habits and safety, and provide him with a lifetime of firearms enjoyment.

I installed the OPsol adapter on my 590A1, and it is 100% flawless feeding with the Aquila Mini shells. I can load 9 +1 in the 18.5 inch tube. The OPsol adapter fits the 500 series Mossbergs only, and can be installed or removed in about 5 seconds. As far as I know, there is no adapter for the Remington 870 yet. I'm pushing 70, so the reduced recoil of the Aguila Mini shells is much appreciated in a home defense weapon.

But I think the hole in the ribs from the 2-3/4 shells was much more obvious and I think that difference would be even greater compared to a 1500 speed 00 buck. He does a good job pointing out the number of shots fired in self defense. I just don't see the need for more than 14 ( or even 12 magnum rounds) and would prefer each round to be as powerful as possible. Now. if we are talking zombi apocalypse I'll take more ammo please. Zombi skulls are softer and there are just so many of the damn things.

As far as I can tell, these were invented specifically for the Mag-7 shotgun. The magazine goes through the grip like a handgun. The short shells fit that smaller space. The magazines also end up taking up less space since they are short front-to-back. Allowing twice the ammunition to be carried by the user. The Mag-7 appears to be a combat weapon system. Some other companies have expressed interest in using the Aguila shells but as far as I'm aware, nobody else has made a specifically designed gun around the Aguila short shells. Now, I don't plan to manufacture, but I plan to build a shotgun bullpup designed around the Aguila short shells as part of my gunsmithing training. But it's just a personal project. My gunsmithing mentor and I have talked about building a few guns around that cartridge. But we will see if they come to fruition.

Because "good" data samples will often represent a culling of outlying data points via application of standard deviation analysis. Admittedly, Paul did not define a specific standard deviation parameter, nor is it likely he performed a specific analysis, but his disregard of visually obvious outlying data points within the total set is reasonable for the common sense purposes of this video. More to the point, Mrgunsingear was most likely using the expression "good data" as a simplified metaphor for "good or useful information" and not as an objective quantification of data. Feel better now?

For home defense, consider this: .45acp running a 210grain bullet down range at 800-900fps is known to have some decent stopping power. A 12ga mini slug is 437 grain (1 ounce) running down range at about 1200fps. Also, the .45 is what 10mm, 11mm? The 12ga mini slug is 18.5mm; twice the weight, moving 50% faster than a .45acp and I'll have more ammo than a 1911 with low recoil. Yeah, I'll have some of that and twice on Sunday. Mossberg 590s running these mini shells under my tree this coming Xmas for sure...Sold!

Round count does give peace of mind. That's an advantage when it comes to confidence in a situation where you need to defend your home. Thieves in my area tend to break in to homes in teams of 3 to 4 people. I might not use less than 5 shells but knowing that I have more would make me feel better. Last thing that I want to be doing is counting my shots to ensure that I don't run out.

Paul: Your pervasive expertise and exceptional teaching skills - once again - shine. This isn’t flattery. For example: - The decision to move the chronograph to four yards (versus seven) demonstrates an unbelievably comprehensive and integrated knowledge of “all things firearms” that most of us, even with many decades of experience, wouldn’t have initially considered. - Similarly, your use of the .410 shotgun makes great sense - to illustrate some of the mini-shells’ limitations - but I certainly would never have thought about including one. So, all things considered, this is another very valuable video. THANK YOU! And I reiterate what a fine idea a “Harrell Firearms Academy” training course (or courses) might be (obviously, there are many major issues to be resolved, but you’re a terrific teacher/leader and I suspect your classes would be oversubscribed). Incidentally, the mini-shells seem more like a gimmick, than like a practical enhancement, to me. V/R.

Hi Paul and thanks for all the videos you do. Times have changes and so have some circumstances. My wife and i are near retirement and are planning on extended trips in a 23 foot Camper Trailer pulled by a SUV. The self defense systems that I have decided on are a 1911 sig sauer that I already own and the Mossberg 12 guage Shockwave outfitted with the Crimson Trace Green Laser side saddle, Opsol insert, grip tape on the stock and a sidesaddle to hold extra rounds. As you can probably guess I will be using the Mini Shells. I would load the tube with the buck and keep 4 slug and more 8 buck rounds on the saddle to top off (2 mini shell in each slot to hold 12 extra rounds). This set up appears to be counter your videos presented I have watched but when looking at my specific needs seems to fit the bill of: Short gun length for Truck and Camper use, reasonable optics for target, extra rounds for a shorter tube and lower recoil. If you could tell me how this sounds to you I would much appreciate the input.

I keep three Mossbergs in my home (My 18.5" 590A1 pistol grip only, my girlfriend's 500 with a full stock, and another pistol-grip-only 18.5" 500, all with lights and Crimson Trace laser saddles and big dot bead sights) and a fourth in my truck (590 Nightstick with a night sight). They all have the OpSol Mini Clip 2.0 minishell adapters in them and they're full of Aguila mini buck shells. The ones in the house I pinned the adapters in place with a roll pin because their removable nature made me nervous, turns out now Mossberg makes 500 and 590 models that cycle the shorties interchangeably with fullsize, but whatever. I can't imagine a better home defense option, frankly. They're handy, reliable, and point-shoot wonderfully, and the rounds have sufficient (but NOT excessive) penetration, spread out to about a 5-6" pattern at 20' or so, kick lightly enough that ANYONE can easily run them, and regardless of what anyone says about power still puts out easily twice the energy of nearly any handgun round. They're also pretty quiet, I feel somewhat confident firing them in a closed room wouldn't do too much hearing damage. The very small risk of overpenetration is their biggest attribute to me.

You and I would get along. The only shotguns we have in this home are mossberg. That's just how it's always been. My primary home defense weapon is a 590. I keep it loaded up with nine pellet 00 buckshot. I damn well know if I hit somebody in the stomach or the chest or the head that inside distances.. with that kind of around.. or shell... I'm leaning towards like 99% chance that they're never getting up again. I actually just picked up a bunch of those short shells I'm just waiting for the adapter to come in the mail. I'm going to do a little ballistic testing just to see what they really have. I'm going to stick with what I just said though cuz that's been proven to be nothing short of absolutely fucking devastating. Pardon my language. Don't get me wrong though I mean two and three quarter inch 3 in 3 1/2 in or one of those shorties getting shot with anything sucks. Definitely something I try to avoid 100% of the time. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

From what I've learned, the 1.75 inch mini shells are made first by Aguila, designed specifically for the Winchester 1300 series (FN's TPS or Tactical Police Shotgun is a clone of the 1300 so should also be able to run these minis). Other pump guns that proved able to run these shells are Kel-Tec KSG, Benelli Nova, and SuperNava. Mossberg 500 series (including Maverick) needs the OPSol Mini-Clip 2.0 adapter for reliable cycling. For every other brand of pump, running the slide hard and fast may reduce the failure rate, but can't eliminate failures completely :)

Using an adapter the mini shells work flawlessly in my Mossberg Shockwave. They also make slugs. The Shockwave can of course handle 2 3/4 shells also. Take into consideration that the Shockwave which has become very popular is mission specific. Tight quarters weapon system (yeah I just made that up) and the mini shells make it easier to shoot in tight quarters. In my home the longest shot possible is 27 feet that is 9 yards and most shots would occur in 10 - 12 foot distance or less. I have used both standard shells and mini shells in the Shockwave. I am confident it will serve me well with either, but I prefer to use the mini shells.

KSGs gobble up minishells and spit ‘em out without issues. AND it sucks to reload KSGs. SO if you load up 22 rounds, slugs in one tube and buckshot in the other, with low recoil, it’s a really nice setup for home defense/riot control, etc. I will say the Aguila slug accuracy vs standard 2-3/4 Rifled slugs is much worse after 20-or-so yards. minishells aren't perfected yet but I give Aguila props for going through the R&D required to manufacture them and create them. Even if the practical usage is tiny, they still forged ahead and did it. Note: there definitely are people who need a lower recoil as they get older and still want to be able to hit a target without breaking a shoulder but I digress. Point is I'm thankful you made the video and thankful companies like Aguila exist and are trying new things.

I second Cajun Swamp fox on the miniclip. I installed it on my Mossberg 500 chambers flawlessly every time with all 3 variants of mini shells birdshot, buckshot, and the slugs. Mini shells are a nearly ideal option for me because I have a pistol grip 12ga with no stock because a full sized shot gun will not maneuver in my narrow hallways easily, but full sized shells have a hefty recoil when all you have is a pistol grip. The lighter recoil, increased capacity, in a shorter shotgun is a pretty good compromise I think. I bought this shotgun before other options like the shockwave hit the market. Like you said in the video. I think buying a box of modified ammo is a better solution than buying a whole new shot gun. The recoil reduction is the real benefit to me, and even though they pack less punch a follow up shot can be made if necessary and that's where the increased capacity comes in. If there's flaws in my logic I am certainly open to recommendations.

Love your videos Paul. My grandpa used to load cut down 12 gauge shells for small game like rabit or squirrel. More or less what you determined 12 gauge with 410 power. Always worked well and saved meat.

Thanks for this review Paul, I’ve been very interested in your meat target results with this particular shell. I have some of these rounds that I occasionally plink with in my Mossberg Shockwave with an OpSol adapter. Nine rounds in a shorty shotgun with low recoil is an interesting mix for a useful snake gun on hikes. For serious use however, I load it with Hornady buckshot 2 3/4 low recoil with 5 fitting in the tube.

Hey Paul, great video. You are a natural teacher. Excellent manipulation of the Mossberg pump, virtually as smooth as a semi-auto. I thought about trying a box of the short shells in my Browning A-5. I think that you saved me the $20.

OpSol mini shell adapter... Designed in Texas. Made in Texas. Made by Americans. Can't believe you left that out. B- today. Minishells work great with the adapter.

@@erg0centric There are fake ones out there. According to OpSol they don't function as reliably as the real deal.

Good review, and good data. I look forward to seeing using the proper adapter for 1 3/4 shells as it makes a huge difference. 2 3/4 is a standard for a reason, 1 3/4 are fun to shoot and practice with. Can they be used for self defense, yup, but so can a 410. It is what you choose to use. This data is useful in making decisions so you now the limitations of your choices. Thanks Paul!

Been loading up some mini shells of my own. 1 7/8" overall length seems to be about right as far as function and I can easily get them on par with common 1 1/8 oz 2 3/4" offerings.

Answered my own question fairly easily - Remington has a "low recoil" 12 gauge 00 buck which marketed as a "law enforcement" round. Presumably to control over-penetration. A comparison between that and the Aguila might be interesting. I would guess it would cycle a semi-auto action.

Low recoil 12ga Buck for LE isn't particularly to reduce overpenetration , it is for less recoil . Yeah, yeah , you probably won't fire very many rounds in an actual shooting incident , but it will make a big difference in shooting 50 or 100 rounds in training .
