HOME ASSISTANT - MOTION ACTIVATED - LIGHTING AUTOMATIONS - PART 1 of 5

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome to our latest tutorial video, the first in a series of five videos relating to lighting automations.
In this video, we’ll guide you through the process of building a home assistant automation that can control your lights based on occupancy detected by a motion sensor.
We’ll cover key topics such as:
- Understanding and setting up triggers and states
- Making service calls
- Determining if the sun is below the horizon
By the end of this video, you’ll have a fully functional automation that turns your lights on when motion is detected, but only when the sun has set and turns them off when no motion is detected for 10 minutes. This is a great way to save energy and automate your home lighting.
Whether you’re a beginner just starting out with home automation or an experienced user looking to expand your knowledge, this video has something for you. So why wait? Let’s dive in and start building!
Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more helpful tutorials. If you have any questions or need further clarification on any points covered in the video, feel free to leave a comment below. We’re always here to help!

Please do a video in detail about how to set or change the state of lighting currently struggling with setting different WLED effects with HA.

Strange you mention that. I just built a tv backlight with hyperHDR running a video capture card and DigUno and SK6812 LED’s. very cool but also it would be a long video. I’ll see if I can fit it into my production schedule if you are interested (the DigUno is running WLED)

Great video. Simple and proper way to create conditional automations. Just wanted to ask if Aqara P1 motion sensor can connect directly to home assistant with zigbee without a hub. Thanks.

Yep. Through either ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT via a Zigbee coordinator such as the Sonoff dongle.

Great video! I'd like to avoid situations where (1) the lights turn on when I want them to stay off (e.g., I shift positions on the sofa while watching a movie at night), or (2) the lights turn off when I want them to stay on (e.g., when I am working at my desk in a relatively still position). I've got PIR sensors in each room and also Shelly Dimmer 2s behind every light switch. Any ideas on how I can override the automation you just outlined when manually controlling the light via the physical switch in the room? For example, I was thinking that if I manually turn the light on, then the no_occupancy trigger is deactivated (and everything returns to normal when I manually turn the light off [or the clock strikes midnight?]).

What a great question, I faced a very similar situation on movie nights. I'd dim the lights with my Aqara cube and start watching the movie, the movement sensor would register movement and turn the lights back up. One answer, of which I am sure there are many, is helpers. I programmed my cube to turn into "movie mode". I then put a condition into my motion sensor light automation to NOT active if movie mode was on and the lights were dimmed. I'd then turn movie mode off to return to normal operation of the motion sensor. You could implement similar by checking your switch to see if it had been manually turned on and setting a helper accordingly. Then, when you turn off the light manually (although not powered off!) then this would reset the helper for normal automation control. Does that make sense ?

Hi, fellow aussie here. I'm currently slowly setting up my HA and keep coming back to your channel for whenever i need something. Any chance of doing a video on light switches that work in Australia? Im torn between Shelly switches (but i believe they run on Wifi so im hesitant to saturate my wifi network with 15 odd light switches) or Zigbee, but cant find any reliable Zigbee two gang switches that I can use in Australia. Thanks for your videos - keep up the good work 🙏

Thats a great question, personally I would drop Zigbee from the race as its great for sensor but unless you have an amazing mesh network all working on Zigbee 3.0 it is not going to be super reliable that you need for a light switch. This is reflected in the industry in that there are very few reputable brands that use it for light switches. So you are going to be using either a proprietary communications protocol, which is the way Lutron made their impact into the market or WiFi. Assuming you are going down the WiFi route, your next point should be your Router. This cannot be the one that your ISP provides, it simply runs out of horse power at around 10-15 devices. So you'll need to factor investing in a good quality router. Thsi doesnt need to be super expensive, so I'd suggest an Asus AC-86U, I have this in a mesh configuration and run 70+ devices on it with no issue at all. Then you come to the light switches, now you get quiet a few different options, LIFX, Useelink, Philips Hue, Belkin, TP-Link, Jinvoo etc. From these I would probably stick with LIFX and Philips Hue, both of which you, as an Aussie :), should be able to pickup from Bunnings (or your local hardware for the rest of the world) and if they dont work, you can return. I hope that helps.

Thanks so much for the detailed response. It does seem like we are limited with choices in Australia compare to US and other markets for reliable smart non-wifi switches. I am struggling to find good brands/review zigbee switchs, so might just have to go down the wifi path

Yep. I'd suggest a robust router and Wifi is your best option. God luck and let me know which you go for and I might try and get a few in for review.

Where did you get the 10 minutes. I didn't see that in your setup

  • @smart_home_australia

I use 10 minutes as an arbitrary value for occupancy detection to have elapsed. A more scientific approach would be to measure the "cool down" period for your motion sensor (the time that it takes to motion, or occupancy) and then to set the value at that plus a healthy margin for error. That way you should never move into a no occupancy state while still in the room. Remember that PIR are more about movement, whereas mmWave are more about occupancy based on their sensitivity. I hope that helps.

I have a very cheap motion sensor. I wanna go to an occupied sensor. I’ve got all this working but using the motion sensor it won’t let me use all of the different settings like what time it quits working other times when it does.

Depends very much on which sensor you have. But if you are sure your sensor has settings and you are not seeing them, then I would suggest that you are probably running on ZHA as your Zigbee protocol, if thats the case try switching to Zigbee 2 MQTT (check out my video) and that usually exposes a lot more sensors. I hope that helps.

What if I want to turn the Light On 10 min before the Sun Go Down

  • @smart_home_australia

Yes, various different ways of going this. If you are using the Sun integration and and event of Sunset then you can insert as "offset" in hrs, mins and secs. Alternatively if you are using the "Elevation" sensor (the angle between the sun and the horizon) within the Sun integration you can set a positive angle (ie. above horizon) but this will not be precise to the minute. Hope that helps.

@@smart_home_australia how would that look like and where exactly would I have to enter the offset details? I'm new at HA 🙂
