Home and Food Signs in ASL | 150 Essential Signs | Pt. 3

Today we’re learning 25 or so signs about home and food items. This is part 3 of our series 150 Essential signs. These are not just the basics of ASL, but the essentials! You need to know how to sign these words before anything else. I also take several of these words and teach you how to use them in common sentences.
150 signs is a lot of signs, but I promise, you can do it! We're breaking these videos down to 6 bite size videos where we'll spend a good amount of time with each word. By the end of this series you should be able to carry on a basic conversation with a deaf person. How cool is that!

    I’m sure you’ll get it! When I watched my very first video of hers, she was talking about things to know before starting to learn ASL. When I saw her signing her name I was like “wow, she’s so fast.” And now most of the ASK I know came from her and I can even spell her name faster than she did in the video! I actually consider it slow now lol. But overall, hard work will come a long way ❤️

    I didn't know sign language was going to be so hard in its simplicity. Wow! There doesn't seem to be "are, can, this, that, is, etc." That's going to mess me up! Need to learn to skip those words when I'm learning.

  • @LearnHowtoSign

    Yes, since ASL is a language like all other spoken languages there are rules to follow. You will go far if you are grasping the concept already.

    When I was first learning sign, it was quite the shocker that a lot of words are omitted. Coming down from that shock, it makes more sense to omit little words like "a, the, is, am, etc" as ASL is a very visual language (obviously) and those little words don't exactly bring up a mental image like nouns and verbs do. Honestly (after getting use to signing), I like the simplicity of ASL over English. ASL gets straight to the point instead of taking that much longer to verbally say the same thing. Ex: in English "Tomorrow, the boy will start on his homework" becomes "tomorrow - his - homework - boy - start" in ASL. Went from 8 words to 5!

  • @rayrerej9630

    @rayrerej9630

    @@aznchik7229Actually, most spoken languages don't have "a" and "the," and a lot of spoken languages don't have "is, are, am." ASL is just its own language, visual or otherwise. :)

    Hey I have a question, how did you learn ASL? I'm assuming you are probably a CODA or you took college classes, but I was just wondering. Thanks for teaching us.

    In 5th grade i had a crush on a deaf girl named Christina. I wanted her to sit with me. I made a gesture with my fingers and she sat down. Come to find out i signed chair or sit. What i love about sign L is most of it is conceptual. I've been interested ever since. Never did go steady with her. We moved soon after that. I can still see her face. Fyi do not stare at people signing. That's eves dropping. Very rude. And it is perfectly acceptable to tap a deaf person on the shoulder. I hope that helps someone. So far I'm enjoying this channel. Aloha

    I have been watching your videos. Very well done. I do have a question. I have not seen what part of the country you are in, like state. I am curious as when I took some sign classes my instructor, who was deaf, told us that signs can be different because of location and I have noticed you do a few different then what I learned. The small amount of sign I learned was to communicate with four deaf children when I volunteered in my sons class. I helped with reading and writing skills, plus some math. Their direct teacher used Signed Exacted English. I am very rusty with my sign but in viewing your videos I remember more then I thought and have learned so much more. I need to pull out my college sign books to brush up more. I certainly am enjoying your lessons. I wish I could have had this resource many years ago. It is wonderful that you are doing this.

    Hi Mary, all of my professors came from the Midwest but we currently live in Texas. Your instructor is 100% accurate. There are regional signs just like we have regional words. I took SEE (Signed Exact English) in college but do not practice it regularly.

    There's the difference. I learned by taking some classes at the local community College. Our instructor was deaf but could speak. He was great in his patience with us. We did have a sign book that was purchased at the college bookstore. I still have it plus several dictionaries for sign. It was back in the mid 1990's when I took the classes. I am in Southern Oregon. One more question, an opinion really from you. Over the years people who know that I do a little sign seem to always ask if I know what others are signing when around a signer. It has always been my opinion that this is rude and I say so. I exlain that to me it's listening to private conversations. Then again my signing was used with children in a classroom and on school trips, not with adults. So I have no experience of how the deaf community regards this. I just think I should never do it and won't.

    Whenever the order is different from english,like (Hamburger Done, ice cream want) is this because of topicalization? I wonder, if i think in chinese the order will come out better than if i thought in english, cause in mandarin e.g it is possible to ask someone in this word order : Keys, remembered?

    How come " I love signing asl" didn't end with a closing signal? I'm just starting to understand the closing statement so it confused me a bit. I thought when you use i/me you end it with a closing signal pointing back to yourself.

    You double tap quite a bit when you do signs. Like "sandwich" you touch it to your lips twice. Just wondering if when you sign in real conversation do you double tap or are you just emphasizing the sign.
