To be fair, these two might have been very young - or not yet born - when Candy passed away in 1994 and perhaps their parents didn't introduce them to his works. When I look back when I was a kid, I never would have known how funny the comedy greats like Henny Youngman, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Milton Berle, etc had my parents not introduced me to their work.

The John Candy/Catherine O' Hara scenes were basically entirely improvised, which is why they're so absurd and genuinely hilarious - They were both part of the Canadian comedy scene coming up, and upon rewatching you can really tell that Catherine is doing a lot of "yes, and?" lines at Candy who is just having a blast (especially "...and these are songs?") By far my favorite part of the movie is their mini-adventure.

Most of the John Hughes' movies don't have many sympathetic adults. He really had a way to portray adults from a kid's perspective. George was spot on when he made the comment about Kevin seeing the old guy in the store and realizing he was seeing him from his perspective (not reality). That was John Hughes. The whole setup of Sixteen Candles is a girl's parents forgetting her birthday, much like in this one the parents forgetting Kevin. Hughes was an amazing writer.

The film is deliberately a kind of live action cartoon and that applies to everything. At the awards ceremony, it's common to play a clip of the nominated performance. But because Pesci's character did so much swearing, they couldn't find an appropriate clip to play. So, they played clips of he and Daniel Stern's follies as Harry and Marv!

If you live in the wrong part of a city, burglaries are still pretty common. Several people I work with (but thankfully live nowhere near) have had their houses/apartments broken into in the last year. And things like laptops, desktop computers, big screen TVs, etc. will sell for more than enough money when you're talking about burglars who are living in poverty. Even if you only steal little things, the money you get for lots of little things adds up.

How is that possible? John Kramer would have to been born in 1950-ish and this must have taken place in 1990? Also he didn't "plan" to become a killer. He was a successful engineer that went loony after his wife miscarriaged and he failed to off himself. You could say that triggered his serial killer persona. That's why I've never understood the Jigsaw theory. The end of Rambo 5 is basically Home Alone on steroids so if we use our imagination Kevin could have grown up to be John Rambo too.

Kevin just spent the whole movie, up to this point, looking for someone to pack his luggage. This family is hoping to leave for France in the _morning._ He's still not packed and his mother just sent him to sleep in a part of the house that no one (and _especially_ no one in a _hurry)_ ever has occasion to _go_ to. Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine has a section where he's talking to Canadians about burglaries, and the common opinion seems to be that kids will be kids. There's also a part where he opens people's unlocked doors in Toronto and walks into the house. Most people basically smile and say hello, and nobody shot him. It's a strange foreign country with ways different from our own.

@@hamletksquid2702 Yeah I never thought it was that remarkable that he was able to walk into people's houses, since it's pretty common for people to leave their door unlocked while they're still at home and awake, even in the US. I guess if you live in a really sketchy neighborhood, one might be more inclined to keep the door locked at all times. What's a lot more interesting about that scene, as you say, is how chill people were about him just walking in and saying hi. I did some political canvassing a few years ago, and while most people were perfectly pleasant, there were a few houses where I was actually threatened with violence just for being there and knocking on the door.

Some of my favorite reactions to this are Legal Eagle analyzing Kevin's crimes and Dr Hope analyzing the injuries to the wet bandits.

Turns out that Nero did *NOT,* in fact, set Rome on fire, and did *NOT* watch the fire burn the city while playing the harp. That was slander from his political enemies. Nero was actually a pretty ok emperor. You want "the worst possible emperor"? Look up the lives of Commodus, Caligula or my personal choice: Heliogabalus. ☀️

No Nero was an Awful Emperor ... And though he did not order the burning of Rome he did blame the Christians for it! .... he was Overthrown and he Killed himself!

@@jamesalexander5623 Yes, as I said... he was terrible only if you listen to his enemies. Like the Christians. The same people who sanctified Justinian, because he was an ally and say he was great (spoiler alert: he wasn't). That's kinda the point I was making. Nero wasn't great, nor he was terrible... he simply had very vocal enemies. I'm... not really sure what you think the part about the coup and the suicide adds to the conversation.

Didn't Nero kill his mom? Didn't he have the Christians he blamed set on fire and feed to lions? That kind of thing makes your enemies vocal

This was kinda parenting in the 80's/90's. Exaggerated, but not too much. Then it overcorrected to "you can have anything you want" and participation trophies. So hopefully we find a middle ground now! :)

As a kid in the 90s myself, the 90s/early 00s were when participation trophies were a big deal. (And the kids receiving them didn't want them; it was parents who were stupid)

@@JBWinter We did not have participation trophies, but we did have participation ribbons. 1st, 2nd and 3rd got trophies though. No one wanted them. if anything it seems worse because it just points out you didn't win. does not say at all that you tried. I walk every cross country I was ever in, yet I still "participated".

Parenting wasn't anywhere near this harsh/exaggerated in my experience, being a child in the 80s. The vast majority of parents were perfectly nice & caring, just not as overprotective or indulgent as they're perceived to be now.
