Sergei Prokofiev was a misunderstood genius, according to Barbara Nissman. Both traditionalist and forward-looking, he defied the conservative and modernist tendencies of his contemporaries. His music was truly unique: charged with energy, tinged with emotion, infused with an original harmonic language, and bound by tightly constructed forms.
Nissman, a champion of Prokofiev's music who has recorded all nine Sonatas (and the Tenth Sonata fragment), pays tribute to the great Russian composer, with scenes from her extended tutorial on the monumental Sixth Sonata.

His music excites me more than any other composer and his style was totally and utterly unique.
We need more Homage to Prokofiev with Barbara!!! Please, Prkfv 7th and 8th sonatas!!!
People forget that Barbara is considered a Prokofiev specialist. She's been flown numerous times to fly to Russia to lecture on Prokofiev. She is so underrated. I would have loved to have her as a teacher.
I wrote my University Dissertation on his 9 Piano Sonatas. I found a lot of gentleness. Soul. Less of the aggression that many players find.
Congratulations again Barbara! What an exciting presentation and inspirational exposé of Prokofiev's masterpiece (one of many), even to an already won-over Prokofiev fan! Even if this sonata did not earn him a Stalin Prize, it remains my favorite amongst his war sonatas... how could anyone still doubt how big a heart Prokofiev had, when he managed to compose such gorgeous pieces in the middle of a terrifying and distressing period! How amazing a human being he must have been!
Still one of Prokofiev’s greatest interpreters!
So good to hear Nissman talk about the music. Would love a talk about no.5 which I've never understood . Most of us play 2nd or 3rd Sonata so words about these is always welcome! The 5th concerto I've been in love with since seeing film of Richter in it .
She was talking very interesting about the importance of form in music. (in the end)
MORE PLEASE, Barbara Nissman ! Intrigued by your perceptions of this great composer .
What a legend, plays so masterfully and with such wisdom! 💓
This is my favorite Prokofiev sonata for sure!!
Awesome! You talk about Prokofiev's music with such inspiration! It can't be touched!
Miss Nissman is out of this world ! Thanks for sharing. She is a great artist and a beautiful human being. I have seen her 2 times in 2 marvelous recitals.
She is absolutely incredible, and this video is yet another great treasure from your channel, thank you very much!
Such a pleasure to watch and listen to. Thank you, tonebase!
She is amazing!
Love Prokofiev and loved Barbara Nissman's interpretation and live sound and video recorded performance of his Piano Sta # 6 at BYU performance which is on www.youtube.com.
correction: delete "performance " after BYU, though I agree with novelist Jacqueline Susann that "Once Is Not Enough. "
